Among the most commonly performed procedures for pain management is the Epidural Steroid Injections or ESI, to offer pain  reduction from spine related conditions, such as pinched nerves or Spinal Stenosis. As compared epidural given during childbirth epidural steroid injections is different. Now and then about 9 million Epidural Steroid Injections are performed annually in the U.S and the number of procedures seems to rise

The Epidural Spinal Injections are an outpatient approach,  performed using Fluoroscopy a type of X-ray guidance which gives the practitioner an actual image of the spine during the procedure. Dr. Zaki Anwer, MD, explains the procedure, he performs at Pain Management Institute, Chicago

“I inject anti inflammatory steroid medications and not numbing medications that lead to weakness or deadness. To specify the targeted location for medication to be injected, during your ESI, I will ask about your symptoms, conduct a physical exam. A small injection of local anesthetic is given where the epidural is to be injected. I then aim the needle precisely and inject a small amount of contrast pigmentation. The dye confirms the ideal point for the injection. I inject the steroid and remove the needle, these types of steroids don’t produce potential numbness or weakness and the patient can walk soon after the procedure”: “There might be some stinging sensation or slight bruising at the injection site, treating with ice may help. After the procedure you must be accompanied by someone to drive you home safely as the dizziness caused by epidural steroid injections may cause interference in driving. I recommend you must not take a bath for 24 hours, however, you can shower any time

As with any injection procedure, there are risks associated, Epidural Steroid Injections also carry negligible risks such as infections at the injection site, a headache, or allergic reactions to the contrast pigmentation. These complications are not debilitating and may not become life threatening

Talking about the post procedure results Dr. Zaki Anwer explains the pain is not immediately relieved, but from the numbing medication the pain may relieve for a couple of hours. Within following 3 to 5 days the steroids reduce inflammation decreasing pain

Often times patients get nervous about Epidural Steroid Injections, there is a common misconception, of equating the epidural steroid injections with the kind of epidural injection given during the childbirth. Some believe that the injections may cause them paralysis or may bring some other kind of horrific side effects Dr, Zaki Anwer,MD, claims the epidural steroid injections are highly safe and effective when performed by a trained pain management specialist. At Pain Management Institute Dr. Zaki Anwer,MD, and fellows provide hundreds of patients remarkable pain relief and help them lead a healthy life
