About Us

The City and County of Denver is seeking a national caliber leader in historic preservation planning and implementation.  This position will be responsible for inspiring, innovating, and mentoring the Landmark Preservation Planning and Implementation Team for Planning Services within the Community Planning and Development Department.  Our goal is to continually evolve our efforts around all aspects of preservation work and strengthen our already strong position as a national leader in historic preservation.  Make no mistake, our mission is to be the strongest Historic Preservation group in the country, and this position will provide an elite opportunity in the field of preservation for a motivated, mission driven leader and expert.  This position will also serve as the Historic Preservation Officer.
 
The Landmark Preservation team is a highly motivated and very talented group of experts in historic preservation.  They oversee all aspects of preservation work in our city such as influencing city policy, establishment of new districts, creation and updates to regulations, demolition review, Section 106 reviews, tax credit reviews, design review and inspections coordination.  In addition, they serve as a community resource for training and questions for Registered Neighborhood Organizations, City Council, and other stakeholders; and provide staffing to the Landmark Preservation Commission and the Lower Downtown Design Review Board.

About Our Job

Leading this team will apply supervisory, architectural, design and historical expertise to carry out the responsibilities for the Landmark Preservation team, including:
 

  • Direct interaction with the Planning Services Director and other Supervisors to set work program and operational goals, identify strategies, and ensure cross departmental collaboration
  • Prioritizing, overseeing and tracking progress of work program items in a manner that support the Landmark Preservation program
  • Direct supervision of a team of 4-6 preservation staff including supporting their professional development, managing workload and schedules, performance evaluations and training
  • Determine resource needs in order to accomplish work program objectives to inform budget decisions
  • Provide technical expertise on preservation policy, creating and updating preservation regulations, Landmark designation applications, design review applications, etc.
  • Provide guidance on preservation related matter to stakeholders such as neighborhood organizations, City Council, boards and commissions, and regional, state, and national preservation agencies

About You

Education Requirement:

Bachelor Degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Public Administration, or a related degree.

Experience Requirement:

Three years of professional level experience in community, city, regional planning, historic preservation, development review, or housing and neighborhood revitalization.

Preferred Experience

  • Eight to ten years of professional level experience in historic preservation
  • Expertise in establishing and applying programs, processes and standards for designation and review of Landmark structures and districts, including knowledge of architecture, landscapes, preservation technology, local, state and Federal criteria, including tax credits and Section 106 review
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills and experience
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant software programs including Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, Sketch Up
  • NCARB, AICP, Historic Preservation Certification or registration as an architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration is desired but not required.  

Education/Experience Equivalency:

A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.
