The Vampire Diaries could end after its upcoming sixth season, star Ian Somerhalder has hinted.

Somerhalder has played Damon Salvatore on The CW's supernatural drama since 2009.

"It very well could be our last [season]," the actor said. "I think now that there's a finality to it, everyone's really realising that this is a very important time in our lives. We created some very cool storytelling."

The CW is yet to officially confirm the future of The Vampire Diaries beyond its sixth season, which is scheduled to premiere on October 2 in the US.

A first teaser for the new season - dealing with the fate of Somerhalder's Damon - was unveiled last week.

In the UK, the series - which also stars Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley - airs on ITV2.
