Member of the Congress’ Joint Economic Committee and the Bangladesh Caucus, Carolyn Maloney, said, “We also want to set the example of women empowerment that Bangladesh has established.

“Not only the prime minister, leader of the opposition and Speaker of the House are women, but a major political party is also led by a woman. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is now a global phenomenon in the realm of women empowerment.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to announce her candidacy for the Democratic presidential run on Sunday.

On Saturday, Hillary supporters gathered at New York’s Battery Park sporting banners that read ‘Ready for Hillary’.

Speaking to bdnews24.com at the gathering, Maloney said, “We also want to follow the example Bangladesh has set for women empowerment. In 2008, Democrats had created history by electing the first African-American as president.

“Now we want to repeat it by electing Hillary as the first woman president of the US.”

She said that they hoped to garner support for the former first lady from the Bangladeshi-Americans.

The Congresswoman claimed that Hillary was backed by huge public support. “Already $50 million has been raised for her campaign even before the official announcement is made. Thousands of youths have enlisted to work as volunteers for the campaign.”

The Democrats had elicited a similar response from the people in 2008, when Barack Obama had started campaigning, added Maloney.

Former US President Bill Clinton’s wife Hillary had been in the run that time, too, but lost.

The Obama-administration then appointed her as the Secretary of State and she served for the government until 2013.
