This is quite ironic. I would think it would be the other way around.
I don't think the Nissan Quest had side impact airbags but the Cooper does have front and side airbags. I guess from the photo that he hit them right between the front and back door. Judging from the photo, seatbelts would not have made a difference for the family. It was a horrible wreck.
The 2004 and newer Quest had good side impact rating. Judging by the offset crash test photos of the 1993 to 2003 Quest, it would have completely failed a side impact crash test.

Did you fail to notice the slight detail of the mini going 90mph?
According to the second article, the driver of the mini was considered brain dead. Darwin at its worst. Too bad he won't live to see what he did.
Sounds like he was brain dead before the accident.
