Vitor Faverani to have surgery, out 6-8 weeks

We should have seen this coming.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Vitor loves posting pictures of his puppies and his knee recovery, but this one had an ominous tone:

Faverani had surgery on his torn lateral meniscus back in March and after six months of rehabbing, his knee is still swelling and he's missed the majority of training camp.  This morning, the Celtics announced the latest update on the big man's progress:

There's some speculation that with too many players on the roster, the Celtics could consider waiving Faverani in favor of keeping a younger prospect like Dwight Powell.  With Tyler Zeller coming along and potentially filling in as the back up center, El Hombre Indestructible might become El Hombre Dispensable.  He has one more guaranteed year on his contract (with a team option next season) for just over $2M.  Maybe I'm reading between the lines, but it's curious to me that Faverani would have the surgery in Spain vs. getting his knee cleaned up here in Boston by one of the team doctors.  Regardless of what happens, it's unfortunate that Vitor will be out and his absence just feels like Darko's departure two years ago.  They left under very different circumstances, but you just get the sense that this might be permanent.  His outside shooting would have been an asset in Brad Stevens' new offense and there was always something appealing about his no fear attitude.
