A 53-year-old Spanish man was found dead in the bathroom of an apartment in the Pattaya area of Chon Buri province on Monday night, police said.

The man was found lying face down, naked in a pool of blood in the bathroom of the second floor apartment on Soi  Pattaya Klang 16, in tambon Nong Phreu of Bang Lamung district, said Pol Lt Chorpaka Prueksachart, duty officer at Pattaya police station.

Police were alerted around 9pm on Monday.

The man, identified later by his Thai wife as Gallardo Garcia, had suffered a serious injury to his right eyebrow, said police. He was believed to have died at least 12 hours before his death was reported.

There were no traces of a struggle found in the room, but police did find 5-6 empty bottles of beer.

His Thai wife, Chutinan Thammabut, 47, told police that she had been with Garcia for 11 years and they had a 7-year-old daughter, although they had not registered their marriage. They had recently started living separately as her husband often drank alcohol and this led to quarrels, Ms Chutinan said. However, they still phoned each other every day.

When she could not contact him on Monday she became worried and went to his room to see what was wrong.

She knocked on the room door several times, but there was no answer. She then asked the apartment staff to use a spare key to open the rdoor. There were two chairs blocking the door when it was opened. They found Garcia's body in the bathroom, Ms Chutinan said tearfully.

Police believed the man had been drinking and slipped and fell in the bathroom, striking his head. His body was being sent to the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for post mortem examination.
