Frictionless Architecture for Web (Short Discussion 3)Lec MajFranz Hartl (Yale), Chris Keith (Brown)Many of us have large-scale web and content management Drupal footprints deployed in modern infrastructure. Recognizing common challenges that we share in higher education, would we benefit in developing a shared code base and DevOps process that would optimize our efforts and allow us to easily switch infrastructure across providers such as Acquia, Pantheon, Amazon AWS, Google Cloud? Could we reduce cost, improve user-centered design, advance ADA Compliance and more? Rationalizing IT Enterprise data across service delivery and operational/DevOps tool setsLouis KingLec Maj (Yale)On one hand, we are using systems to manage our service delivery. On the other hand, we use other tools to manage our operations/DevOps delivery. Many of these tools hold critical data that we need to fully understand current state, support change, drive reliability and inform strategy. How are we rationiling these data points and making them useful across the IT Enterprise?DYale0111

Automating Campus Network configuration, provisioning, and monitoring (Short Workshop 1)Mark McCahillCharley Kneifel, William Deigaard, Kemal Badur, Andy Palms, Jim Jokl, Scotty LoganCampus networks are one of the most complex systems IT runs, but most tools for managing and monitoring the network are limited and/or proprietary + very expensive. How can DevOps approaches and open source tools be applied to automate network operations and provide users with a better, more consistent experience? With most user campus network access taking place via wireless, are our staff and tools up to the challenges? CRM impact to the EnterpriseTodd HillHow are other organizations trying to optimize CRM in the sub-optimized world of Higher Ed? Shifting from a strategic plans to strategy managementJim PhelpsAt UW, we are trying to shift to a strategy management practice where we revise our strategies, vett with business and then do our annual investment planning based on these strategies. This is different than the 3 year strategic plan. Are others doing something similar? How would you go about this? Value? Risk?DUWash, Cornell, Yale, NYUDuke, UCB, Harvard, USC4448

NSF Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs UpdateFlorence HudsonShort topic: NSF has invested $6M to fund 4 regional Big Data Innovation Hubs, plus $11M in spoke awards, EAGERs and planning grants. Many of our institutions are involved and leading these efforts. This session will update us all on the activities of the hubs, spokes, researchers, and related infrastructure. We can discuss how we all might support these efforts together. We can invite one of the BDHub leaders to present. (e.g. René Bastón, NE BDHUb leader at Columbia University.)UWash, VT0222

Protecting the campus from distributed denial of service attacks.William DeigaardSecurity is obviously a key strategic activity for all of our campuses, and we're all investing more resources to ensure that we are properly protected. It seems to me, however, that we're not spending enough time thinking about the risks we face with distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Increasingly, new service providers and business models are coming into play that can help with these things, but it does not seem that higher-education has a good set of best practices in this area. Additionally, we need to work on this as a community rather than as silos. Internet2 has done some recent work with developing a service in this area, but that is mostly around protecting our physical campus networks. We need to be thinking about our cloud resources as well.DRice,Brown, Wisconsin, Internet2, Harvard, Princeton, PSU0777

Around the CSG - Lightning RoundBill WrobleskiUse lightning round format to allow each university to highlight one or two critical initiatives or innovations at their institution. Purpose of the session would be to get a quick overview of what's going on around the CSG, and hopefully this would spur more conversation afterwards. (Lightning rounds feature ~5 minute sessions by each speaker in rapid succession.)EDuke,UCSD,Brown, Penn, Stanford, UCB, Virginia, ND, USC9099
