VW I.D. Buzz microbus caught driving at Pebble Beach

Is VW building hype prior to a production announcement?

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz concept EV has been caught driving around in the wild during the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Zelectric Motors, which converts old Volkswagens to run on electricity, caught up with it during a drive at the beach, as Jalopnik reports. David Benardo of Zelectric posted the above video to Facebook, which shows the I.D. Buzz driving.

Seeing the VW I.D. Buzz in motion is encouraging. When a concept car is drivable, it feels less like vaporware and more like something that could actually make its way to production. The fact that it's out on public roads is all the more impressive, and the reactions seem positive. Steven Ewing of Motor1 (and a former Autoblogger) also got a crack behind the wheel, and tweets that he doesn't think he has "ever received so many thumbs up."

VW says it will eventually build the I.D. Buzz, and a recent report suggested it could happen as early as 2022. That same report says an announcement could come as early as tomorrow at the Pebble Beach Concours. VW allowing people to get behind the wheel of the Buzz at the event, even taking it on public roads, seems to be building momentum for the vehicle, and we're hopeful for some concrete news soon. We expect an announcement about a production version of the Buzz would create a whole lot of buzz from the public.
