Marimba One Ivana Bilic IBB3 Medium Birch Mallets - Product Information

The Marimba One Ivana Bilic model IBB3 Boy Alto mallets are a “shy” mallet that doesn't look for a flashy entrance. It is slightly lighter and softer then IBR5, introspective with a pure and “innocent” sound, and ideal for chamber music and J.S. Bach.

Ivana Bilic wanted her new mallet line to emphasize the singing characteristic of the marimba, by relating the sound that each mallet makes to human vocal qualities. Her definitions for each mallet combine the ideal playing range for a mallet with the color/timbre of its sound.

Huge, just huge

These are so huge. They are virtually identical to the Malletech Klimasara 11 mallet, but slightly more focused because of their reduced contact surface and completely single-toned. So they are a slightly soft "medium" range mallet. They sound fantastically full and loud on the bottom end and I don't care for the in the top 1.5 octaves. They have a very thumpy roll sound, which is where I think the Kilmasara 11 outshines them for versatility. I'll be getting used to them since they are WAY heavy but I'm looking forward to learning more about them!

I'm not quite so sure about the "pure and innocent" qualities of these mallets; to me, the IBB3 is a heavy, strong mallet that falls in the tonal range of what one would call a "general" mallet. It is so much more than a general mallet though. If you are unfamiliar with Marimba One mallets, simply know that they are in general quite heavy, are wrapped tightly with thin yarn, and draw out a lot of fundamental (resulting from their weight and the core which seems to magically not produce screaming overtones in the lower register). These mallets in particular are pretty hefty, but produce such a clear, full tone, the extra weight is worth it. You won't want to use your other mallets that produce irritating overtones and sound thin and weak after you get these. Note, however: they are best used in a graduated set, as they are very single-toned.
