Nicalis To Publish Terry Cavanagh’s VVVVVV on 3DS eShop

October 6th, 2011 – Nicalis, Inc., developer and publisher of independently awesome video games is VVVVVVery excited to announce a publishing agreement with Terry Cavanagh for VVVVVV on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. VVVVVV features the same amazingly retro gameplay, aesthetic and chiptune music (by Swedish musician, Magnus Pålsson), but now in 3D and on the go with your 3DS. Attendees of Indiecade in Culver City, California can play a near-complete preview VVVVVVersion for the first time on 3DS! Just find Terry Cavanagh or Tyrone Rodriguez and ask them to play!

Released in late 2010 for PC, VVVVVV is a 2D action-platformer deeply rooted in the days of 8-bit gaming with incredibly challenging gameplay and secrets. In VVVVVV, you play as Captain Viridian, who must not only save a dimension on the brink of collapse, but also find your ship’s crew–all of whose names begin with the letter V.

Now 3DS owners can experience the critically acclaimed game in 3D, anywhere. When asked for an obligatory quote, Terry Cavanagh said, “I’m VVVVVVery excited about it! This is the first time anything I’ve made has been on a console.”

VVVVVV 3DS Features:
Open-world environment with six unique levels
20 Trinkets to locate and collect
Full 3D awesomeness integrated into the retro-looking art style
- Dual screen functionality with a real-time map!
- Music by Magnus Pålsson
- New Featured Levels
- Future content updates

VVVVVV continues Nicalis’ partnerships with highly talented and super-awesome independent developers. Previously Nicalis has teamed up with Studio Pixel (Cave Story, Ikachan), Nicklas Nygren (NightSky) and NIGORO (La-Mulana). Now Terry Cavanagh’s incredible VVVVVV, too, will make the jump–er, flip–to console.

This is actually a good sign for the 3DS. If smaller indie games like this are actually going to the service and not fleeing (like WiiWare) then it could garner some good support

Yeah if I see more games like this coming to the 3DS I will buy one for sure.

Ugh, out of all the systems, why the 3DS??? I'd much rather have it as an XBLA/PSN game.

3D and/or portability are really the only reasons to re-release the game in the first place. It will run on any PC and setting up pad support is easy.

You can already run it on the machine you typed that post in.

Good thing Nintendo has nothing to do with another publishers price.

Nice, color me surprised. Always figured Nintendo suggested a price considering how iOS games and whatnot are already more expensive on the platform.

Nicalis? Won't be reaching the EU anytime soon then...

Or you could buy it on PC now... The point of this version is that it's portable.

Edit: Ugh nevermind, you're an achievement whore :/ Worst reason to port beg ever...

Awesome news. Will definitely double-dip when it's released in eight years.

So that you can port-beg in this thread.

Achievements...trophies! There are no achievements/trophies on PC.
The game has a series of 20 collectable trinkets. Ya know, how things used to work before everything was integrated into one monolithic framework.

But what's the point if it's not contributing towards some meaningless metascore?

Nintendo has price tiers depending on content and features, but that was with Wii Ware and DSi Ware. There seem to be quite a few high content games, reasonably priced for the e-shop, in Japan, so I see no reason why VVVVVV wouldn't be.

One of the reason iOS games seem to be more expensive, is that Nintendo won't allow the e-shop to be flooded with high content games at 99 cent prices. I doubt that would be a very friendly ecosystem for e-shop exclusive titles, and would hurt high-content down-loadable games.

I think they have some sort of achievement system on Steam that I don't pay very much attention to so I'm probably wrong.

Achievements/Trophies are overrated as much as I like them.

Also, you're wrong, PC games do have achievements. Although not this game I think

Well that's a nice surprise. But knowing these guys, we probably won't get it for another 2 years or so!

Speaking of which, where the hell is La Mulana Wii Ware, Ikachan DSiWare and Night Sky 3DS?!

This mightn't be the best place to ask, but has anyone played Antipodes? I think that's what it's called. The trailer makes it look like a VVVVVV clone.

I was thinking of buying it, but I don't know if it's any good.

I may just get this.

I haven't tried it on my PC since they did the update. I was stuck on the escort mission part.

Ikachan was coming to DSi? I never even knew.

Someone tell me more about this Nicalis and what they did to earn this reputation.

Well they have a tendency to announce games and then take years to actually release them, periodically telling people "it's coming soon".

And even after their games are released in the US, they still take an ungodly amount of time to reach Europe for some strange reason.

Eeeeew..

On-topic: I'll be gladly playing this game while the rest of the world will be obsessed with MH4.

And La-Mulana still isn't on Wii Ware :/
It has been for months in Japan. Dunno what's taking so long everywhere else?

I feel worse for Japan, they're not getting Cave Story WiiWare/DSiWare at all. Pixel can't even buy his own game. [/boggle]
