Newborn Prep Guide by sunnymelon photography

let them sleep, for when they wake... they will move mountains

what to expect

All props, wardrobe, styling and set-up are be provided with your session fee. Space heaters, warmers and hand sanitizers are always used with the safest precautions taken for your little one. Session time usually range around 1-2 hrs and I will be handling your baby the entire time unless feeding or diaper change is needed. Please help yourselves to any snacks or drinks and enjoy the experience.

when to schedule

Most newborn sessions are booked between 5-14 days old. I ask that you reach me soon after your successful delivery as it may take up to a week to schedule. Your little one’s birth stats are considered such as: weight, number of days old, circumcision and if any skin issues are present.

what to bring

  1. Milk/bottles/nursing accessories.
  2. Pacifier with no stuffed animal attached.*
  3. Plush blanket.
  4. Diapers/wipes.
  5. Going home pajama for baby.
  6. Toys and or snacks if with sibling(s).

prepping baby

  1. Try to skip a feeding in the morning until right before your appointed time. After feeding your baby, only dress them in a diaper.
  2. Bathe your baby with either a full water bath or a wet cloth wipe for some awake time.
  3. Nothing should pull over their head and omit socks or mittens until after the session to avoid stretch band marks on their skin.
  4. Depending on the time of year, wrap a few layers of blanket(s) on top of them while in the car seat.

Give a feeding before leaving depending on your travel time below:

  • If you live within 15 minutes: Feed baby 20 minutes before leaving.
  • If you live within 30 minutes: Feed baby 10 minutes before leaving.
  • If you live 1 hour away: Feed baby half the milk and the remaining half once arrived in studio.

parent/sibling poses

Thin, snug fitted neutral colored shirts/tops are best recommended, this is ultimately to replicate a skin to skin contact without excess fabric which may cover baby. Avoid collars, logos, patterns and anything with bright colors. Most poses are usually tightly framed to keep focus on baby, usually only your waistline and above is shown. Jewelry should be kept to a minimum to avoid causing any snags on their skin. Younger siblings will be photographed at the beginning of the session and intermittently join back at certain setups. Alternatively- feel free to have another parent arrive towards the end of the session with child(ren) to avoid restlessness.

Snug fit simple tees with jeans or a simple tunic dress for girls work best. Please remove their shoes and socks for the photos, our goal is to make sure they are comfortable and not restricted by bulky clothing. Adults or group photos will be done at the end of the session, there is around 1-hour of time so feel free to do any last minute touch-ups then.

Please consult at least 3 days in advance if you have preferences of colors or set-ups. Selections used are based on gender, baby’s size, baby’s alertness and inventory.
