Steph Curry surprised Oakland high schoolers with a FaceTime call to Kevin Durant

While Steph Curry’s previous 5 Minutes from Home episodes have featured a YouTube star and rapper Nipsey Hussle, this latest one was a little different. This time, Curry took a ride with three students who play basketball at McClymonds High School in Oakland.

The Warriors star shared some wisdom about the importance of each player accepting their role in order to have a successful team and how he responded when people told him he was too small to make it in the NBA. But the most powerful moments were when the students shared their own stories about dealing with the deaths of friends and family. Curry said to them:

“Adversity really exposes a lot of things about yourself in now you handle challenges and struggles when your chips are down. I learned a lot from ya’ll when ya’ll were telling your stories. I don’t think I’ve gone through tragedy like that in a sense of it being so close to home and you being forced to grow up really fast. That’s a strong testament to the character you guys have and the willingness you have to deal with it head on, and not shy away from it.”

After the deep talks, Curry pulled out his phone and said he wanted to lighten the mood with a FaceTime call to his teammate Kevin Durant (at the 5:30 mark).

Immediately, one of the guys told Durant that he’s a huge fan, even saying he was a fan when he was with the Thunder and still admires him after he left for the Warriors.

KD’s response to that cracked Curry up. Durant said, “You’re one of the last ones left.”

Durant added praise for Curry.

“Without the man next to you, I don’t know where I’d be,” Durant said. “I’d still be trying out right now, but I owe a lot to that man next to you.”
