Huawei has patented a unique gesture control method for smartwatches. The gesture control allows the user to control a smartwatch by drawing on the back of their hand and even in the air. The patented was registered with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization).

The new technology patented by Huawei projects ultrasonic or infrared signals that scan the movement of fingers on the projected area. The projection is done around the smartwatch. But, the back of the hand should be aligned at the level of sensor to use it as a trackpad. Writing something on the back of the hand will be interpreted as an input to the smartwatch.

The technology will solve the problem of small screens and the difficulty to operate tiny smartwatches. As the sensor projects in four directions, users will also be able to draw gestures in air as well.

Most of the gestures performed on a smartphone can be performed on the smartwatch. Double-clicking, long-press and multiple finger-gesture can be used to operate the watch. According to a report on LetsGoDigital, Huawei is also expected to come up with a writing mode on the watch to make the feature more usable.

The technology is expected to come on the next series of smartwatch by the company, but there is no official confirmation about this. The company had launched a smartwatch  Watch 2  in 2017 and is expected to launch the feature on the upcoming Watch 3.
