Would indulging vapers be a retrograde step?

The Times

Sir, The science and technology committee is not being logical in suggesting that the ban on vaping on public transport should be reversed (report, August 17).

It is clear that vaping is a less harmful source of nicotine than tobacco. However, this is not the same as it being “safe”. As smoking is already banned on public transport, allowing vaping will only increase people’s nicotine intake, as well as exposing non-addicts to chemicals.

As a retired respiratory physician, I am aware of the immense harm caused by smoking. E-cigarettes are less destructive but still contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug.

Tobacco companies are buying up e-cigarette producers. E-cigarettes are being produced in various appealing flavours — and this is not to appeal to cigarette smokers.
