Getting from the airport to Bangkok city. Cheaper and faster is the train. The Airport Rail Link Express Line runs every half hour and takes only 17 minutes from the airport to Phaya Thai terminal (taxi: at least an hour during the day). Price as of March 2013 is 90 baht one-way or 150 baht return. The Airport Rail Link City Line leaves every 15 minutes, takes 25 minutes for the whole distance because it makes 6 stops in between, and costs half as much (45 baht single). Then take a taxi from your stop to your final destination.

From Don Muang to Town by Taxi

The Airport is around 24km from the centre of town and currently the easiest way to travel to and from Don Muang Airport is via taxi. This usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour depending on traffic. The approximate fare to the airport will be around 350 baht. Leaving the airport via the taxi rank will incur a 50-baht surcharge and there is sometimes a long queue for taxis.

From Don Muang to Town by Bus or Train

The cheapest way to get here is via Bus No 29, which leaves from the Siam area and costs around 20 baht, although this can take a bit longer than a taxi-ride and there will be little room for luggage. For the adventurous another option is the train, (service hours: 06:00-20:00) right opposite the airport building, where you can board a train bound for Hua Lamphong (Central Railway Station), located near Bangkok’s Chinatown. Trains are infrequent (about every hour), take an hour and will be busy, as they are also on the main line to Chiang Mai.

The airport is far from the city, 45km on a modern toll highway (with a few hiccups). As of March 2016, pricing from the airport to hotels in central Mandalay is USD10 or MMK12,000 (private taxi), or USD5 or MMK4000 (shared taxi). There are touts from several competing taxi companies in the post-customs arrival area who will approach passengers, although they all charge the same fares.

Taxis can be organized through any hotel or guesthouse and, if you are arriving at Mandalay airport, there is a taxi desk after customs to make arrangements. Shared taxis start at 4,000 Kyat per person, while private taxis go up to 15,000 Kyat. Taxis are a good choice for several people sharing costs, anyone travelling to a non-city center destination, or anyone who doesn't want to wait around for a shuttle bus.

Air Asia has daily flights between Bangkok and Mandalay and is the leading budget choice for those travelling to Myanmar. They offer complimentary transportation to and from the Mandalay airport -but those coming in on other airlines need not apply!

All you need to do is present your Air Asia ticket/boarding pass to the staff. You can't miss the bus - it's large, red, and branded with the Air Asia logo. The bus schedule corresponds with the airline schedule, with two buses leaving the airport 45 minutes and 60 minutes after arrival (and two buses leaving Road 79 by Mandalay Palace between Roads 26 & 27 at 9:00 and 9:15 am to correspond with the departing flights).

The ride was a slow, bumpy experience that took over an hour. As our accommodations were located in North Mandalay we were still nowhere near home once the shuttle dropped us off. While we could have asked the staff to direct us to a city bus, we decided to walk.
