Almost 400 attempts to access pornographic or explicit websites were made on Oireachtas computers in just 24 days, Independent.ie can reveal.

Data released under Freedom of Information laws show that 970 attempts were made by staff of the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission, Journalists, visitors and contractors to access blocked websites from December 5-29 2016.

The busiest day for attempts to link to pornographic or profane sites was December 21.

On that day there were 44 attempts to link to sites that were considered "pornographic" and five attempts to link to sites blocked for hosting "nudity".

Some attempts were categorised as a bid to connect to sites listed as "extreme", while others were regarded as "profane".

However, Oireachtas authorities were keen to point out that  "some of the data may have been generated by automatic links from other sites via pop-ups" or may also be because of malware or virus activity on Leinster House computers

There are no logs available relating to browsers of TDs, senators, their staff or party staff.

Previously it was reported that attempts were made to link to sites including were www.modernandmature.com, www.pinupdoll.com and www.westcoastbikini.com from computers on the Leinster House network.

Escort profiles were also on the list of banned sites users tried to visit.

Logs are kept on a four month rolling basis by the IT service in Leinster House and below is a snapshot of just the last month in 2016.
