Alliteration and Assonance A Powerful poetic Technique

Alliteration in Tongue Twisters

Alliteration also makes tongue twisters even more difficult to say:

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers How many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick?

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck If a woodchuck would chuck wood? A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck If a woodchuck would chuck wood.

Silly Sally swiftly shooed seven silly sheep. The seven silly sheep Silly Sally shooed shilly-shallied south. These sheep shouldn’t sleep in a shack; Sheep should sleep in a shed.

Now choose a picture or two, and write your own alliterative description. By all means use more than three alliterative words in each example. You may like to tie a few together

Use the letter S three times

Use the letter w three times

Use the letter L three times

Use the letter D three times

Use the letter T three times

Use the letter W three times

Use the letter G three times

Use the letter R three times

Use the letter H three times

Now it is your turn

Choose your favourite description from at least one of the images and alliterative exercises above and write a short poem. It doesn't need to rhyme but must feel good in your mouth, like the texture of your favourite food.

Using Adobe Spark, create your own alliterative poem video, post or page. Use the creative commons images and music to bring your words to life, unless you have taken your own photos to use. Choose a trigger photo and we will make an alliteration collage for our walls. You will use the Aurasma app to hear one another's poems. Enjoy!

Keep your wits about you and have fun with our last exercise for this part of the lesson

Assonance

View the video below and think about how alliteration are similar and also how they are different. Be ready to discuss your thoughts. See if you can find an example of assonance in your poetry text book to share.
