Ponsse taking it down in the woods!

Following my visit to Wales last year to see SPJ Forestry with Doosan dealership Mason Bros, I have certainly been inspired to look at more of the kit these guys use on a daily basis.

I had been taken to remote mountainside in the Ty Glas forest close to the village of Corris in the south of Snowdonia to catch up with Paul Jones of SPJ Forestry Ltd and his specially modified Doosan DX235LCR which carries a Ponsse H7 harvester head. Most of us rarely get to see such machinery in action, as its often a very solitary job deep inside woodlands, so it was a real treat to see this stunning combination in action. Interest in such machinery is very high and even a short video clip I took of this machine in action on Instagram amassed close to 142,000 views.

Further up on the hillside Paul had one of two Ponsse Scorpion eight-wheeled harvesters complete with Ponsse H7 harvester head, working away. Looking like something out of a Transformer movie, these machines are impressive bits of kit. With a low centre of gravity, incredible stability is enhanced by the machines active stabilisation system which help this machine climb on some very steep inclines in complete safety. Unfortunately, on the day of my visit we were too far away to take in some of the action, but I did manage to get a long distant shot of the machine working.

Paul Jones regards the Finnish built Ponsse forestry equipment as some of the best in the industry and its not hard to see why. Check out this promotional video from Ponsse to see for yourself.
