The first of a three-volume set of double CDs which tells the story of Fame Records and its subsidiary labels from 1964 through until 1973.

This first volume cover the 26 singles released by the label between 1964 and 1967. These bring us not just the very deepest of southern soul, but also attempts at pop-soul and garage rock by the local musicians who made up the studio’s house bands.

Included are some of the earliest recordings of Jimmy Hughes, Dan Penn and Clarence Carter, obscurities by June Conquest, the Villagers and Northern Soul classics by James Barnett and Art Freeman. 12 tracks are new to CD.

FAME Studios was started in 1962 by Rick Hall. Rick has just received a Special Merit Award awarded at the Grammy's.

・60年代からアラバマのマッスル・ショールズで手作りの録音スタジオを拵えたところから始めたリック・ホールのフェイム・スタジオ。外部の顧客のための貸しスタジオ＆貸しミュージシャンの側面が強かったものの、自前のレーベルも持っていました。そんなフェイムとその関連レーベルからのシングルAB両面の曲を集めた第一弾（2枚組）となります。

　マッスル・ショールズ界隈の本格的な全国ヒットは1965年のジョー・テックスの Hold on to What You've Got と66年のパーシー・スレッジの「男が女を愛する時」まで待たなければいけませんでした。そのためかモータウンその他の影響が深い曲調もありでヒットのコツをまだつかみきれていない感じです。それでも、トミー・ロウと並んで最初期にフェイムを経済的に潤したジミー・ヒューズの元祖不倫ソング Steal Away があり彼の曲が多く収録されているだけでなく、裏方に専念させられる前のダン・ペンやスプーナー・オールダムのシングルもあり、ジューン・コンクェストの艶っぽい声が耳を惹いたり、のちに所属レコード会社は変わってもフェイム・スタジオの屋台骨になるクラレンス・カーターや、オーティス・レディングの弟子的存在のアーサー・コンリーが台頭してくるところまでの収録です。

　説明では第3集まで出ることになっていますが、今のところ第1集で止まっています。今の時代ネットで調べればその後の収録曲はわかるとはいうものの、未完では落ち着かないので続きが聴きたいです。

I'm a big fan of 1960s soul music and did not know a lot about the output of Fame Studios, so this 2CD set and related reissues of Fame recordings have been a revelation for me. Wow, this is great stuff. Other reviewers have rightly highlighted the great soul singles here by Clarence Carter, Arthur Conley, and Jimmy Hughes. Most of the A-sides are true "hidden classics" - the vocals are perfect, the bass pops, and the horns are incredible. Soul heaven. I also enjoy '60s garage band and pop stuff and Fame also cranked out some good sides aimed at Top-40 radio: "Laugh it Off" by the Villagers is a great British Invasion knock-off (the flip is a solid version of the Beatles "You're Gonna Lose that Girl"), and "Gonna Make you Say Yeah" by Terry Woodford sounds like a perfect high school dance encore by your favorite local band. If you have worn out your Motown, Stax and Atlantic collections from this era, you will be knocked out by the Fame singles.

I can't say enough good about this 2-CD set from Ace. The label already has a great reputation, and this release will only add to that. A single release with the "A" sides of the 26 singles would have been welcome, but thank goodness Ace didn't do that, because most of the "B" sides are as good, if not better, than the "A" sides. I was familiar with Jimmy Hughes, Arthur Conley, and Clarence Carter, but I had no idea what I had missed by not hearing the other 9 artists featured here. Of the 52 tracks featured on this release, I can safely say there are 52 fantastic recordings. This may very well be my favorite Ace release yet. Highly recommended! I can hardly wait for Vols. 2 and 3 to get released.

This is a big disappointment for three reasons. "You might as well forget him/Everbody let's dance" By Jimmy Hughes distributed by Vee Jay (Fame 1002) has been omitted.When I emailed ace about this omission they did not respond. Point 2:- Art Freeman "Piece Of My Heart" (which is why I bought this CD) is not the single version (which I have on Fame) but a completely different take with shrill girls spoiling the effect of the Fame band. Point 3:- yet again the wrong track for "Thread the Needle" has been chosen (as it was on Clarence Carters Fame Singles) If you are going to title a CD "The Complete Fame Singles* then make sure it is!! It's called mis-representation otherwise ! Ace need to make sure that they are releasing the correct tapes. For sixties soul fans these errors matter.
