End of Term and New term Arrangements

The end of term is quickly approaching so it is timely for me to ensure that you are clear on finishing dates and starting days for the new term.

Term 6 will finish for the majority of students on Friday 13th July. As this is the end of our Enrichment Week, actual finishing times will be determined by the activity that is taking place. All school-based activities will finish at normal school time (3.05pm) and the Bristol Bus will collect students at the normal time, too.

Every year, we operate an Intervention Week, which will take place this year from Monday 16th July. Individual students are asked to attend school at various points during the week so we can provide bespoke help. Parents of students in Year 9 and Year 10 will be informed via letter, if we need their daughter to attend school after 13th July.

We will operate a ‘staggered start’ to the New Year in September. Students in Years 7, 10 and 12 will start school at 8.25am on Wednesday 5th September and all other year groups are expected the following day, Thursday 6th September. I will write to all parents shortly to confirm these arrangements.

Hayesfield’s Royal Navy CCF Unit Opening Ceremony

Thank you to all parents who attended this prestigious event with us. It was a wonderful afternoon, where honorary guest, Captain Ablett MBE, who is the first female captain of the Navy’s Training Centre, HMS Raleigh, joined us. Congratulations to all of our cadets who had practised their drill to an exceptional standard. Captain Ablett remarked that we had the smartest Cadet Unit that she had seen, ever! She spoke to all cadets as she inspected the unit and it was a pleasure to here from the girls about how they are using the cadet scheme to improve their confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. I was wearing two ‘hats’ for the afternoon – Headteacher and Sub Lieutenant. I couldn’t stop smiling in my uniform as I was so proud of our students, even if they didn’t all let the guests at the cakes first..! Please see Lieutenant Cording’s account in this bulletin for further details and photographs.

Success for Lizzy

Last Saturday, Lizzy competed in the Bideford Town Band Solo & Quartet Contest with Midsomer Norton & Radstock Silver Brass Band Academy. She played really well and gained excellent results:
  • 3rd - under 17 Air Varie
  • 1st - 10 to 12 years Slow Melody
  • 1st - under 17 Duet
  • 1st - under 17 Quartet
Lizzy was also awarded Best Instrumentalist in the quartet section.

As well as playing in the Brass Academy Lizzy also helps with the beginners group and has recently joined the senior band on 2nd trombone. Congratulations, Lizzy – you have some very impressive shields and trophy. 😊

Honor’s First Cadet Sailing Trip

Honor is our first RN Cadet to experience a week’s sailing and I am delighted to share her account with you:

Here I am on the top deck of the HMS Bristol giving me a fantastic view of Portsmouth Harbour on the final night of my five day Royal Navy Competent Crew Course this spring.

I joined the skipper, his mate and two other cadets on the Amaryllis— a small sailing yacht.

Each day it was early to rise and with an eye on the tide we’d set up a schedule for the day.

Armed with our maps we set a course along the Solent stopping at Cowes and Yarmouth. Along the way we began to learn the essentials of manning a yacht. Starting with the vocabulary: the important names such as main sail, jib and the ropes controlling them had to be mastered, then we moved on to navigation and map-reading.

Most importantly, becoming a competent member of the crew involved keeping cool under pressure, following directions and working together to keep the yacht on the right track.

There were many things to master in a short time, including living and working in close quarters with strangers. Mother Nature presented a new set of challenges each day with changing tides and weather keeping everyone on their toes, but with everyone working to do their bit we had a successful trip.

Making Hayesfield History with the official opening of our Royal Navy CCF

June 13th 2018 marks an historic day at Hayesfield with the official opening ceremony of our Royal Navy contingent. Our cadets did us very proud with excellent drill and uniforms to match. Parents, governors, council members and members of the local business community joined us to mark the official opening. A one-off!

We were supported by Royal Navy personnel and the opening was carried out by Captain Ellie Ablett (MBE), the first female Captain of the training establishment, HMS Raleigh. She was impressed by our cadets and the feeling was mutual as she provides an excellent role model of a female excelling in a traditionally male world. She inspected the squad and took the time to speak with every cadet. After the official part of the ceremony was complete we all enjoyed some wonderful cakes as part of the afternoon tea. It was chance for everyone to mingle and talk about what fantastic opportunities the CCF has provided our cadets so far.

I was super proud to be the Contingent Commander as I know how hard the cadets had worked on their drill, saluting, polishing an ironing to make the day a success.

All our cadets did a great job in particular, cadet Petty Office Phoebe Baker – Johnson, Able Cadet 2* Pim Sullivan-Tailyour, Cadet Hetty Matthews and Cadet Liberty Clayton who has specific roles in the ceremony including leading the drill, piping and raising the ensign.

We also used the occasion to celebrate the promotions of the following cadets:
  • Petty Officer Phoebe Baker-Johnson (Yr12)
  • Leading Hand Ellie-May Peters (Yr 10)
  • Leading Hand Alice Gane (Yr 9)
  • Able Cadet 2*: Fleur Baker (Yr 10), Honor Chauveau (Yr 10), Beth Sparkes (Yr10), Beth Urquhart (Yr 10) and Pim Sullivan Tailyour (Yr 9)
  • Able Cadet 1*: Ellie Brookes (Yr 10), Aoife Haines (Yr9), Freya Hughes (Yr 9) Maya Ramirez (Yr 9) and Bebe Waddell (Yr 9)
Receiving their Ordinary Cadet epaulettes were: Jocelyn Cotterill (Yr9), Livvy Dorman (Yr 9), Delphine Garside (Yr 9), Jenny Kaye (Yr 9), Issie Kinson (Yr 9), Mia Parsons (Yr 10) and Holly Shattock (Yr 10)

It was a fantastic and memorable occasion enjoyed by all.
Lt Cording (RN CCF)

Summer Homework

We think it is important for our students to have some academic work complete over the long summer holiday to keep their brains active. As it is a holiday, we are not setting too much work! Staff will set Summer Holiday work in in English and Maths only for y7 and 8 students (each subject should take no more than 3 hours over the holiday period). In Year 9 staff will set homework in English, Maths and Science. If your daughter is in Year 10, she will be set preparatory work for Year 11 by all her subjects.

All Summer Work will be published on the School Website and will be accessible from the banner on the front page from Monday 9th July. Homework will be marked and returned within 3 weeks of the start of the new school year.

News from our Faculty Teams

English Faculty

Congratulations to all of our spectacular Poetry by Heart competitors!

Sophie Frost, Emily Rorison, Peony Mitchell, Juliet Becker, Jasmine Thrower, Maisie Parkin, Cerys Griffiths, Sarah Clark and Vita Wall all showed great courage and real insight into their chosen poems, which they recited entirely from memory in front of an audience in the Roper Theatre last Friday.

Special mention goes to Tabitha James, Jazmine Vale and Fleur Preedy for first, second and third place respectively. The event was opened school wide for the first time this year and we were delighted to have so many high quality entrants. It was a real treat to hear poetry spoken aloud, with some students even performing their own work!

Watch this space for next year’s competition.

Year 10 – Bali Rai author visit, Tuesday 19th June Period 4 & 5

Year 10 you have worked so incredibly hard over the last year in preparation for your English Literature exams, we are beyond proud of you all. It is now time to celebrate with a real reading-related treat! Bali Rai, author of “Web of Darkness”, “Rani and Sukh”, “The Last Taboo” and many more fantastically gripping stories is coming to Hayesfield to give a talk during your English lesson period 4 and 5 in the Roper Theatre.

"My talk will be based around the short story I wrote for Amnesty's Here I Stand anthology, The Mermaid, which is about a Syrian refugee girl. It will touch on the need for greater empathy and learning to see human beings before we see race, culture, gender etc... This is based on the work I've been doing for Empathy Lab UK (http://www.empathylab.uk)"

For more information, ask your English teacher, head to the library where you can find copies of his books or check out the website above.

If you wish to purchase a signed copy of Bali Rai’s books, you need to bring £6 with you on Tuesday.

Twohigg's Literacy Tips

Last week’s Literacy Tip examined the importance of topic sentences and connectives within the paragraph, to improve text coherence. This week’s Tip will explore how connectives can bring cohesion to a text.

Cohesion refers to the grammatical features used in a text, to enable sentences and paragraphs to fit together. Below are groups of connectives, which give cohesion to texts in different ways.
  1. Also, moreover, furthermore, additionally.
(These extend and build upon a previous idea)
Felix was a talented athlete. Moreover, he had amazing physical strength.

  2. Firstly, secondly, thirdly, finally, later, next, then, after this.
(These allow the writer to organise actions into a sequence)
Firstly, you need to clean up the mess. Secondly, you need to apologise to Granny. Finally, you need to go to your room.

  3. Similarly, likewise, by comparison.
(These allow the writer to compare ideas for points of similarity)
Angela was a musical prodigy. Similarly, her sister was gifted in Maths.

  4. However, on the other hand, in comparison, an opposing view, alternatively.
(These allow the writer to contrast ideas for points of difference.)
He had enormous charm. However, he was deceitful and could not be trusted.

  5. Although, except for, other than, if only.
(These are useful for qualifying and refining ideas)
I love chips, although I am aware that eating them everyday is not necessarily particularly healthy.

  6. For example, such as, for instance.
(These can be used to introduce examples to clarify an idea.)
It is often difficult in infer the spelling of an English word from the way it sounds, for example the word ‘yacht’.

  7. Consequently, as a result, so, hence, therefore.
(These link ideas together in terms of cause and effect.)
Eric lost control of the car he was driving. Consequently, he spent several weeks in hospital.

  8. In conclusion, as we have seen, to summarise, in the end, overall.)
(These indicate that a conclusion is being drawn, based upon previous ideas within the text.)
People who do not exercise are more likely to develop heart disease and suffer from depression. In conclusion, exercise is necessary for health.

Art

Romeo and Juliet Lino Prints

I am really proud of the work 9SL have been doing with me inspired by the work of artist Peter Paul Piech. They produced these prints using quotes from Romeo and Juilet. I've loved the lessons where the girls have been quietly carving Lino while discussing the play. Also a great way to learn useful quotes. Thanks also to Ms Twohigg and Miss Woolger for their enthusiasm and support.

Look out for the exhibition of this work in the English department soon.

Mr Lee

Year 12 Art Trips this week

Year 12 enjoyed inspirational trips out this week to both the Victoria Art Gallery and Bath Spa Art College degree show. Both very worthwhile and full of varied, vibrant and interesting art work. We will be heading off to Trowbridge next week to look at their art foundation show - a lovely chance for our students to see work from previous Hayesfield School Art students as well as getting a glimpse of what's in store for those Year 13 students who have secured places there next year.

SOLO SINGER OPPORTUNITY

Perform ‘Walking in the Air’ from ‘The Snowman’ with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Sunday 16th December 2018 3.00PM & 7.00PM, Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts
We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity as part of BSO’s Rising Talent Programme for two talented young singers to perform a solo of ‘Walking in the Air’ at the screening of The Snowman accompanied by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Performance dates
There are two performance opportunities: one afternoon and one evening performance at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on Sunday 16th December 2018. The two soloists will each be assigned a performance after the audition process has finished.

Applicant requirements
Applications are open to girls and boys aged between 9 – 13 years old on the day of the audition. Please note that only boys with treble voices should apply.

Previous applicants
We welcome all applicants from previous year’s auditions to re-apply this year.

How to apply
The applicant’s parent or guardian must complete an online form located on the BSO’s Rising Talent website, which you can find via the link below.

The deadline for completion of forms is Wednesday 12th September at 5pm.
After this deadline, all applicants will be invited to attend a morning group audition (approximately 15-20 children per group). If they are short-listed, they will attend a solo audition in the afternoon.

Link to form
https://www.bsolive.com/snowman-2018/

Audition information and preparation
Auditions will be held at St. Nicholas Church, 30 Wareham Road, Corfe Mullen, BH21 3LE on Saturday 29th September 2018. Applicants will be assigned a group audition time in the morning, and those who are short-listed will be auditioned separately in the afternoon.

All children attending the group auditions will be required to sing ‘Walking in the Air’ by Howard Blake. Applicants must also prepare an additional solo piece (lasting no more than 5 minutes) to sing if they are short-listed for an audition in the afternoon.

There will be an accompanist for the morning group auditions and the afternoon solo auditions. Applicants must provide the piano accompaniment part or bring a CD backing track for their prepared solo piece. Unaccompanied solo pieces will also be accepted.

Applicants should learn ‘Walking in the Air’ from memory, but there will be a lyric sheet projected onto a screen to act as a prompt. It is not compulsory to perform their short-listed solo piece from memory.

Please note that only those who attend the audition will be considered, as unfortunately we cannot accept video or voice recordings as a substitute for a live audition.

Concert rehearsals
Rehearsals for both soloists will take place on the day of the concert on Sunday 16th December in Poole. Both soloists for the Lighthouse concerts will need to be available for the afternoon and evening concert as they will be each other’s understudy. If you have any further questions about this opportunity, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Year 9 Rounders Tournament

Huge congratulations to the Year 9 Rounders team for WINNING the Y9 B&NES tournament! Hayesfield was in Pool A playing against Norton Hill, Broadlands, St Gregs and Writhlington. The girls batted and fielded excellently winning the first three games comfortably however it was a very close game against Writhington winning by only half a Rounder. This meant Hayesfield won Pool A and went through to the final against the winners of Pool B, Oldfield.

In the final Oldfield batted first with Hayesfield fielding extremely well Oldfield scored 3 Rounders. The girls knew this was very beatable. They went out confidently and finished the innings on 6 Rounders. This is a fantastic achievement doubling Oldfield's score. The team showed great teamwork, skill and knowledge of the rules. Special mention to Jam Bond, Grace Allen and Charlotte Clampitt-Dix for receiving player of the match awarded by the other schools.

Injured/Illness in PE lessons

The PE Department would like to highlight the expectations of students in terms of their PE lessons if they are injured.

As a Department our aim is for all students to achieve their personal best and to work hard towards achieving their sporting ambitions. This means that we want students to be participating in lessons as fully as possible at all times to ensure their best progression.

If students are unwell or injured for a lesson, it is important that they still bring their PE kit, get changed and have a conversation with their PE teacher about the role they can do in the lesson whether this be to try participating practically or coaching and supporting. Either way, PE kit is required and, therefore, students should be prepared and ready with this for all lessons.

Where students have long term more advanced injuries, we would require a medical note from a doctor or physiotherapist to state the injury and period of non-participation. We would expect, where possible, students to get changed for their PE lessons but understand that in some extreme cases, e.g. broken limbs or back injuries, students may be unable to change. We would still, however, expect students to arrive for their PE lessons where they will be given suitable coaching or written tasks.

Gum Shields in PE

A reminder that Gum Shields are essential items for PE and students must be prepared and bring these for their PE lessons.

A reminder that the PE Department sell gum shields for £2 in a range of sizes for students to purchase. These must be brought ahead of time, before PE lessons, as they require moulding..

Kit Expectations

A reminder to all students that Year 7 & 8 should be wearing the new style black and purple PE kit and Years 9-11 should be wearing either the old or new style PE kit for both their lessons and after school clubs. Leggings are only permitted for Years 10 and 11 and these should be plain black sports leggings.

For students studying hockey this term it is essential that they have a gum shield, which can be purchased from the PE office for £2.

It is essential that students have their PE kit named as this helps to return lost kit to its owner.

Fitness Suite Notice

In line with the terms and conditions signed as part of Sixth Form student induction, it is essential that Sixth Form students use the fitness suite in line with the rules and induction they have received and must not use this facility alone.

Sixth Form students should sign in at reception before using the fitness suite.

Students are not permitted to use the facility without having received an induction from Hayesfield staff this academic year.

Golden tickets

This week we have been celebrating exemplary attendance in a really positive way. We have been very impressed with the amount of students who have superb attendance and this week we acknowledged this by handing out to students in Years 7-10 golden tickets. This was based on attendance for Terms four and five. I had a wonderful week visiting every assembly! Every student who received a golden ticket has the opportunity to pick up a small prize from E5.
A huge well done to all our golden tickets winners.

Mrs Pinnegar’s Book of the Week

(The twenty-fifth in a series in which the School Librarian recommends a book available in Hayesfield School Library)
“Welcome to nowhere” by Elizabeth Laird

This week’s book has been chosen to celebrate Refugee Week.

“Twelve-year-old Omar and his brothers and sisters were born and raised in the beautiful and bustling city of Bosra, Syria.

Omar doesn't care about politics - all he wants is to grow up to become a successful businessman who will take the world by storm.

But when his clever older brother, Musa, gets mixed up with some young political activists, everything changes . . . Before long, bombs are falling, people are dying, and Omar and his family have no choice but to flee their home with only what they can carry.

Yet no matter how far they run, the shadow of war follows them - until they have no other choice than to attempt the dangerous journey to escape their homeland altogether.”

A copy is available for loan from the School Library.
Other titles by this acclaimed author are also available as well as a good collection of other moving and thought-provoking stories about refugees.

Exciting Hosting Opportunity

Do you have a spare room

Due to the success of our Euroclass Programme, we are looking for caring and welcoming Hayesfield families to host our Norwegian 6th Form students for the duration of the Autumn Term 2018.

The group is a mix of boys and girls who are looking for accommodation within Bath and easy access to the school whilst they study here to experience British culture and improve their English.

The students would be hosted individually within a home from home environment, which provides daily home cooked meals and a bedroom with a study area. Ideally with an en-suite so they have their own privacy and space but not essential if you can accommodate an extra person in your home. We provide a generous weekly allowance of £180 per week as tax-free living expenses.

If you would like an application form or would like to find out more information then please contact Fiona Harrison via the Sixth Form Office or email international@hayesfield.com
