MACHIAS, Maine — The Town of Machias is finally reaching into cyberspace.

A town website should be up and running by early February, according to town Manager Christina Therrien.

At the selectmen’s Nov. 25 meeting, Therrien said Axiom would have the site ready for her and staff to add content in mid-December. The site probably will go live in February, she said.

The website, which is being developed at a cost of $3,050, will start with “the basics” such as contact information and office hours, said Therrien. “As we go, we’ll add to it.”

Additional information such as ordinances may be added in the future.

Each staffer and selectman also will receive his or her own email address.

“I highly recommend that we resolve and adopt a policy for their use,” Therrien told selectmen during their Nov. 25 meeting. She pointed out that any personal emails sent with the town website email address would be subject to open records laws.

Therrien, who started her duties on an interim basis in August, did not know why Machias has not had a website before now. She said one has been in the works for awhile but she did not know how long.

Selectmen “had asked that something get done in the past but it hadn’t gotten done,” said Therrien.
