*** Warnings About Buying & Selling At Poultry Auctions ***
As poultry and livestock auctions/sales are becoming more and more popular and with the endless supply of poultry and livestock that's available at them, I thought it would be a good idea to give a few tips that may be welcomed by the keen beginner or anyone buying or selling at poultry and Livestock auctions/sales.
1). If possible, send away for a catalogue in advance, have a look through and mark the birds you may be interested in. This will give you time on the day to go and look at the birds you have earmarked, rather than rushing around trying to see what is available on the day, however this is only available usually via the larger established auction houses.
2). Always take a pen with you! As you look at the birds you have earmarked, jot down any thoughts and a price guide as you may not actually be able to see the birds whilst the auction is ongoing, this will be as a reminder for you.
3). Have a good look at the birds, discount any birds that look 'mopey', have a discharge from the nostrils, swollen legs etc or generally look unwell. If in doubt ask someone in the know or near by and not the vendor thus not to cause issues or offence.
4). Watch out for birds that may not be getting on too well. Some birds have never met each other before the day of the sale (they have been reared in different pens) and may not get on once you have got them home.
5). Allow for buyers premiums which will be stated in the catalogue. These are sometimes set quite high and have to be added on to the bid price.
6). Check what method of payment the auction house will accept and whether you need to register first in order to buy.
7). Take plenty of boxes or crates with you, or check if you can buy them there. Having an hours journey with a bird on your lap could be a nightmare let alone dangerous, and cramming too many birds into a box can be fatal.
8). Stick to the price you set yourself. A lot of people get very carried away with the moment and I have seen birds go for stupid amounts of money when they are literally not worth it.
9). If in doubt, take someone with you. Most poultry people enjoy the auctions as a day out and would prefer you to ask than get caught out.
10). If in doubt as to the suitability or health of a bird, don't buy it.
11). Check if the birds are sold by the pen (cage) or per bird. This could be costly if you think you are buying a bargain pen of 3 birds at £20 and then find out your bill is £60!
12). Be sure to network and get yourself known for the next time. You can gain some valuable contacts at auctions. Enjoy the experience. Auctions give you a chance to see breeds of birds you may well never see otherwise, and to meet a lot of new people.

13). Finally REPORT IT! If anything doesn't look right, looks off to you, if you see poorly birds or potential stolen items - then report it to the auctioneer or the auction/sale house.
