Runner’s World Review

The Energy NR is a Newton intended for the rest of us. In the past, heel-strikers have told us that they found the forefoot lugs on some Newton models to be a jarring experience. Those are toned down in this new model, easing the transition for runners accustomed to more traditional footwear. Even so, runners should be patient when making the switch. "I needed to slowly work into them," says Kim Albin, of East Lansing, Mich., who says she's typically a midfoot striker and runs at a pace of seven minutes per mile. These lugs, however, differ from other Newton models, in more than just number (the Energy has five, versus four). Earlier models featured a hollow space above the lugs, which can aid in the cushioning. The Energy's lugs are solid rubber under a block of soft foam. Wear-testers who've run in other Newton shoes say they noticed a different sensation underfoot.
BOTTOM LINE: Toned-down lugs are best suited for forefoot strikers but are less jarring for other contact patterns.

Runner’s World Wear Testers Say

"I have always wanted to try Newton shoes. They were comfortable but different for me to run in."
— Michelle Klingler, East Lansing, Michigan

"I liked how the shoe positioned my foot for a more midfoot/forefoot strike."
— Meredith Poskey, East Lansing, Michigan

"The shoe was lightweight and very roomy in the toebox. It was a good transitional shoe between non-Newton and Newton shoes."
— Tammy Royston, East Lansing, Michigan

We put each shoe through real-world usage and a battery of mechanical tests in our lab to provide you with objective — and exclusive — data. In addition to a shoe's weight, we measure sole thickness (everything that sits between your foot and the road), how well the foam cushions your stride, and the flexibility of the forefoot. All this is taken into account in our reviews of each shoe.
