The EU is bringing free Wi-Fi to its citizens

INEA ceased operations on 31 March 2021. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) was established on 1 April 2021 to take over its legacy portfolio as well as additional EU funding programmes.

Creation date: November 29, 2017

The amended 2017 CEF Telecom Work Programme has been published, including the announcement of the first call for WIFI4EU

The WiFi4EU initiative will provide financial incentives in favour of those public sector bodies who want to provide free, high capacity local wireless connectivity in public spaces within their jurisdiction or at their sites of service. The initiative will aim to contribute towards digital inclusion, improve coverage in disadvantaged areas, reinforce mobility and promote digital literacy.

The 2017 Work Programme for CEF Telecom outlines the general objectives and the priorities for actions to be launched in 2017, and explains how these can be tangibly achieved through the selected digital service infrastructures.

Amendment of the Work Programme

This 2017 Work Programme has been now amended to respond to the need to accommodate the Wifi4EU initiative, and the definition of its activities to be financed in 2017, in addition to the activities already foreseen for the Digital Service Infrastructures. In particular, the 2017 Work Programme will support the following actions in relation with the WiFi4EU initiative:

  • The first call to select the local wireless connectivity applications, including the call's conditions.
  • The IT developments for the WiFi4EU portal and other preparatory measures for setting up the voucher scheme at EU level
  • A new Digital Service Infrastructure to support the WiFi4EU Single Authentication and Authorisation & Remote Monitoring System
