Apple Festival ’08 at Kapnick Orchards, Britton, Michigan

A few days ago when I started this series of posts about the festivals this past weekend near Tecumseh. I posted a photo of some Jonathan apples. This is what the rest of that crate looked like when the camera wasn’t so close.

The apple festival at Kapnick Orchards in Britton. Who’d have thunk they’d have actual apples there? My oh my, that is unique. Oh, and there were lots of pumpkins available as well.

Maybe somebody should tell the folks who organize Appleumpkin about this concept. Hmmm …

Kapnick Orchards on Rogers Highway in Britton, Michigan, has more than just apples and pumpkins available. The Apple Festival they host the second weekend in October is chock full of all kinds of good stuff. Sure, they have some cheesy food vendors, just like any other summer festival in Michigan. But they also have 80-or-so craft booths, which just happen to be some of the better craft booths I’ve seen. And because of this, the crowds can be tremendous.

Besides everything happening outside, inside the store Kapnick’s offerings of their numerous varieties of fresh-picked apples can also generate quite a response from the visitors.

Other than apples and pumpkins, the orchard also has its own bakery which offers dozens of products from fresh donuts, to table and fruit breads, to pies, cakes and other desserts. They also have their own cider press operation. And in the summer months on a warm, active day, there’s nothing that hits the spot better than a big cup of semi-frozen apple cider slushie.

One of the more unique offerings we found was this beautiful, fresh-made pumpkin-pecan fudge.

With the flavor and consistency of a handmade pumpkin pie, this fudge was so good the three of us finished it off in no time at all.

Even though the Apple Festival was last weekend, you should get over to Kapnick Orchards before they close for the season. It’s really worth the trip.
