What to Do Before Moving Into Your New Home

No one likes the idea of moving.  Between the process of finding a new home to figuring out what to do with all of your stuff, moving can be one of the most stressful events in your life.  We understand that you need all the help you can get.  To make the moving process easier, we’ve put together some helpful tips to get you prepared for when you are ready to move.

Pack a Suitcase of Essentials

After the chaos of moving day, you probably won’t want to unpack everything that day.  To make your life easier, pack a bag with all of the essentials you will need to get ready the next morning.  This may include pajamas and a change of clothes for work, your toothbrush and toothpaste, toilet paper, etc.  It’s also a good idea to pack your laptop or tablet.  Keep this suitcase with you on move day so those items won’t get buried in a pile of boxes.

Pack an Open First Box

Toolkit with scissors and box cutterOn top of setting your personal items aside for the next morning, you’ll want to pack a box of essential items you’ll need on move day.  Pack any essentials for eating, like plastic utensils, napkins, paper towels and maybe some cookware if your stove is ready to use.  Also include a box cutter, trash bags, scissors, and tools that you may need for unpacking boxes or assembling furniture.  Finally, don’t forget to include device chargers and power strips for your electronic devices.

When you pack your open-first box, clearly mark it with red tape or use a clear plastic bin to distinguish it from other boxes.  Make sure it is the last box loaded and first box unloaded on move day.

Prepare Your New Home for Your Arrival

If you are able to get into your new home before you move, prepare your bathroom and kitchen for use. Clean the surfaces, hang up a shower curtain and towels and stock the bathrooms with toilet paper so they’ll be ready for when you arrive.   It will be one less thing that you have to do on move day and you’ll be able to take a hot shower after a long day.

Pack Out-of-Season Clothing First

You may not know where to start when it comes to packing.  If you won’t be needing certain kinds of clothes on move day, why not pack them first?  The easiest way to pack clothes is to vacuum seal them since they will take up less space.  On top of that, you can store these clothes away at your new home!

Clearly Label Boxes by Room

This step can go a long way in making move day go smooth and fast.  Try a color-coded box label system for bedrooms, kitchen, family room, etc.  You can either use different colored tape for the boxes or label them with different colored markers.  If you are using Leaders Box Loan program, we ask that you label the boxes on the tape.  Once labeled, your movers should have no problem figuring out where the boxes go in your new house.

Hire a Moving Company to Help You Pack

If you find that you are running out of time to pack, call your mover to let them know you will need packing services.  Using packing professionals is important if you have a lot of fragile items to pack.  Just make sure that you let your mover know well in advance of the move, so they can prepare.  Customers often underestimate the time it takes to pack.  If you start packing a month before you move, you should be able to get packing services in time if you need help.

How to Pack and Move an Office

An office move is even more difficult than a home move. Every minute that normal business operations are interrupted by packing and transporting office furniture, money and opportunities go out the window. Whether you work for a large company or work for yourself at home, these tips will help you prepare, stay organized, and stay in business.

Two Months Before Moving

Make an online calendar pointing out important dates and mapping the entire move on a timeline. If you have employees, share it with them. The more people who know the ins and outs of what’s going on and when, the better. Share important dates with your suppliers and movers, too.

If the office is outside your home, notify your property manager that you plan to move and follow their move-out procedures.

If you’re in a company with multiple departments, delegate to department heads. Give them the responsibility of communicating important information to their employees and taking care of any special requirements.

Get excited! Moving means renewal and change for business. New location, new opportunities. Share your vision for the new location with your employees, partners, and customers.

Take inventory of supplies, furniture, electronics, and everything else that’s going with you.

Everything that’s being left behind can be donated or sold.

One Month Before Moving

Documents older than seven years can be shredded or put into storage.

Order new stationary and other office supplies featuring your new address.

Call utility companies and give them your moving date.

Let neighbors know that moving trucks might be temporarily blocking the street.

Back up important files digitally on a cloud server.

Notify customers that you’re moving and give them your new contact information.

During and After Moving

Update social media profiles and online directories like Google My Business with your new contact information.

Make sure nothing is missing according to your inventory list.

Instead of arranging everything exactly like it was in the old office, switch it up and breathe some new life into the décor.

Moving Tips: What Should I Do If I’m Moving Out of State?

While any move is going to be a difficult one, moving out of state can be particularly difficult. When you make an out of state move, there are several factors you have to consider that you don’t have to think about when you are moving locally, including:

If so, how much more will hiring movers to help me move to another state cost?

How will the weather in my new state impact when I can move? For instance, should I wait to move to a cold weather state until the spring or summer?

These are just a small sampling of the questions you will have to answer before making an out of state move.

The following are a few tips to help you plan and execute a successful and efficient out of state move:

Create a calendar for the timeline of your move – Making a move this complex will involve meeting several deadlines, such as making sure you turn in fees and paperwork on time to ensure you have a house or apartment to move into in your new state.

Put together a budget for your move – The last thing you want to do is get halfway through the process and realize that you do not have enough money to complete your move. Preparing a budget beforehand ensures you know how much money you need to afford your move and that you are prepared to pay for the entire move before beginning the process.

Research and hire an out of state moving company – Not all moving companies travel out of state. If you plan to use movers, do your research. Find the highest quality and most experienced movers that fit within your budget to handle your out of state move.

Do an inventory of your possessions – This has two purposes. First, you need to know everything you own, because you will be traveling a long way with a lot of items and it could be easy to lose something in the process if you are not well organized. Second, the more you have to move the more it will cost, so having an idea of what you own can enable you to decide what to take with you and what to give away or discard prior to paying money to move it out of state.
