ENTER BIRTHDAY COMPETITION
Children of the indie revolution! Rejoice with us in this, the 155th Ning Standard, as fierce panda records turned 24 years old on the 24th of February! Yep, this weekend witnessed our champagne anniversary, and to celebrate we're running a birthday competition giving YOU, the panda public, the chance to get your petit(e) paws on a giant panda bundle of CDs, vinyl records, badges, t-shirts and the odd super sexy white label lying under Simon Panda’s desk, quite possibly right next to the slumbering form of Simon Panda himself.
If you want the chance to win this bundle of indiepop joy all you have to do is give your own wee birthday gift to fierce panda by making a donation to download the giantly excellent 'Please Look After This Bear Too' compimilation album which features the frothily contemporary likes of Desperate Journalist, Easy Kill, VLMV, Wooden Arms, Alphaduka, Fightmilk, S.G. Wolfgang, 485C and a smattering of other smart-eared combos, as per this panda story here.
The prized birthday bundle of indiepop joy comes stuffed to the gills with debonair delights from many of the above plus historical panda screamers from The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Surfer Blood, The Walkmen, Pesky!, The Raveonettes, Shitdisco, iliketrains, Whistlejacket, The Crookes, The Hosts, Goldheart Assembly, Tom Hickox, Hey Sholay and quite-literally-a-few-more panda smasheroonies from our glorious past.
At the end of this week we will pick a winner at total random from those birthday donations in the fervent hope that the birthday bundle finds a welcoming home. Good luck out there...

** AUGUST CHILD GETS SEASONAL ON NEW EP! **
BUY / STREAM 'BURN FOR THE TIDE'
One artist who doesn’t appear on the ‘Please Look After This Bear Too’ compimilation, primarily because we didn’t sign him in time, is AUGUST CHILD. He’s a gently pained singer-songwriter based living in Leytonstone who combines fabulously intricate guitar pluckings with ferociously intimate lyrics and 'Burn For The Tide' is his beguilingly lovely brand new EP, which was released on February 23rd.
Modern journalistic parlance would have it that August Child makes music FFO Elliot Smith, Jeff Buckley and other ravaged troubadours.
But don’t take our word for it, go wrap your ears around the complex-yet-flowing likes of lead-off track 'Honeycomb Prison' and the presciently-titled 'Ebb & Flow' over at all good digital platforms right now. Some canny can-licker once described AUGUST CHILD as ‘fearsomely fragile’, and we’re not disagreeing. As ‘Burn For The Tide’ is the sixth of the six EPs released as part of the 2017 fierce panda EP Club you can see August Child launch the release at the Islington in Islington on February 28th before he roars up to The Social on March 22nd, as per the hoopla at the end of this here Ning Standard.

*GHOST SUNS SAY NOTHING MORE ON NEW SINGLE *
BUY / STREAM 'NOTHING MORE'
One duo which most certainly does make an appearance on the ‘Please Look After This Bear Too’ compimilation is our dreamy electropopping twosome GHOST SUNS. They were also busy on Friday February 23rd, releasing a fragrantly morose brrrrand new single called ‘Nothing More’ which is available on all good digital platforms and which sees them take their fragrantly maudlin synthpop formula and add to in an elegantly imposing edge.
If the sweetly sorrowful hookline of “I’m sorry, there’s nothing more to say,” is curiously reminiscent of ABBA’s broken romantic musings then this is scarcely a surprise as the French duo’s Europop provenance is impeccable. What Ghost Suns add to the mix is the ghostly air of austere electronics so enamored of ZTT and Mute Records in the mid-‘80s, which means they peddle lovely fluid synthetic pop songs with low-flying lo-fi synths and a frankly fruity commercial sheen.
As their debut ‘We Are Not Good People’ EP kickstarted the whole fierce panda 2017 EP Club palaver eleven long months ago you can also check out Ghost Suns at Les Trois Baudets in Paris on March 5th before they head to The Social on March 22nd, as per the whiff-whaff below.

* IT’S OUR PARTY AT THE SOCIAL, AND WE’LL BLOODY WELL CRY IF WE WANT TO *
THURS 22 MARCH - THE SOCIAL, LONDON - RSVP
Have we mentioned The Social on March 22nd? Have we mentioned our 24th birthday?? Shall we remind ourselves of our cunning plan to celebrate this, that and the other??? Yes, yes we shall. To recap, then: on Thursday March 22nd fierce panda records is hosting a slightly belated FREE birthday party at The Social in London Town to celebrate turning 24 donkey-hugging years old.
Rather cannily the night will double up as a celebration of the release of the ‘fierce panda 2017 EP Club EP’, which brings together the six acts who’ve release EP Club EPs with us over the past year with names like Cavalry, Fightmilk, The Caress, Leaone and the aforementioned Ghost Suns and August Child, all under the charitable auspices of Arts Council England. Four of those EP acts will be leaping into the West End fray, and those acts look like this:
THE CARESS
GHOST SUNS
LEAONE
AUGUST CHILD
The Social, London
Thursday 22nd March 2018

Until next time, TTFN.
