Lower Hudson Valley Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney is one of 16 people to apply for the job of New York attorney general, according to a list released by the state Legislature.

A legislative committee will interview the applicants May 15 and 16 before the state Assembly and Senate, acting as a single body, pick a replacement for Eric Schneiderman. Schneiderman, a Democrat, resigned May 7 after the publication of a report that he physically abused four women.

Rep. Maloney, D-Cold Spring, is a candidate for re-election to the House this fall, but would have to step aside if appointed attorney general.

Barbara Underwood, the state solicitor general, is serving as state attorney general on an interim basis. She, too, is on the list of 16 applicants for the job.

Maloney’s congressional district, New York’s 18th, comprises all of Orange and Putnam counties as well as parts of southern Dutchess County and northeastern Westchester County.

Maloney first was elected in 2012 and was re-elected in 2014 and 2016.
