RESUMO

Africa is the greatest contributor to the burden of foodborne diseases in the world. The problem is associated with the weak food safety control systems in many countries of Africa. Africa's national food control systems are based on fragmented legislation which provide for multiple jurisdictions resulting in weaknesses in coordination, inspection and enforcement of food safety measures mandated to different sectors such as agriculture, trade, and health. It was hypothesized that the weak food safety legislation is a result of inability to contextualize and appreciate the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for strengthening national food control systems. Raising awareness and knowledge on interlinkages and authority levels among the sectoral food safety actors can foster appreciation of the FAO and WHO recommendations and inform food safety policy reforms in the continent. This article highlights the interlinkages in food safety activities of the actors along the food chain. It also contextualizes the roles of each agency or ministry and proposes institutional arrangements to be considered in strengthening national food safety control systems in Africa.

Food and nutrition are a steadfast essential to all living organisms. With specific reference to humans, the sufficient and efficient supply of food is a challenge as the world population continues to grow. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be identified as a plausible technology in this 5th industrial revolution in bringing us closer to achieving zero hunger by 2030-Goal 2 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). This goal cannot be achieved unless the digital divide among developed and underdeveloped countries is addressed. Nevertheless, developing and underdeveloped regions fall behind in economic resources; however, they harbor untapped potential to effectively address the impending demands posed by the soaring world population. Therefore, this study explores the in-depth potential of AI in the agriculture sector for developing and under-developed countries. Similarly, it aims to emphasize the proven efficiency and spin-off applications of AI in the advancement of agriculture. Currently, AI is being utilized in various spheres of agriculture, including but not limited to crop surveillance, irrigation management, disease identification, fertilization practices, task automation, image manipulation, data processing, yield forecasting, supply chain optimization, implementation of decision support system (DSS), weed control, and the enhancement of resource utilization. Whereas AI supports food safety and security by ensuring higher crop yields that are acquired by harnessing the potential of multi-temporal remote sensing (RS) techniques to accurately discern diverse crop phenotypes, monitor land cover dynamics, assess variations in soil organic matter, predict soil moisture levels, conduct plant biomass modeling, and enable comprehensive crop monitoring. The present study identifies various challenges, including financial, infrastructure, experts, data availability, customization, regulatory framework, cultural norms and attitudes, access to market, and interdisciplinary collaboration, in the adoption of AI for developing nations with their subsequent remedies. The identification of challenges and opportunities in the implementation of AI could ignite further research and actions in these regions; thereby supporting sustainable development.

BACKGROUND: Clomiphene is widely used for the treatment of anovulatory infertility, yet there remain many unrecognized adverse events (AEs). The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the safety profile of clomiphene. METHODS: The data were derived from the first quarter of 2004 to the third quarter of 2023 from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. The detection of new AE signals involved the use of four algorithms: reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN), and empirical Bayesian geometric mean (EBGM). RESULTS: A total of 16,677,289 AE reports were acquired from the FAERS database over the study period for all drugs, and there were 2,620 AEs specifically reported in 720 patients following clomiphene use. The AEs encompassed 102 preferred terms (PTs) across 24 system organ classes (SOCs). The SOCs included pregnancy, puerperium and perinatal condition, congenital, familial and genetic disorders, reproductive system and breast disorders, and eye disorders. Some new AEs were identified, including conjoined twins (0.5%), Potter's syndrome (0.3%), genitalia external ambiguous (0.3%), esophageal atresia (0.6%), and anal atresia (0.3%), which are not mentioned in the drug instruction. CONCLUSIONS: Although the majority of AEs aligned with the drug instruction, some new AE signals such as conjoined twins and genitalia external ambiguous were not captured. Well-designed studies are required to demonstrate the safety of clomiphene. These findings had important implications for informing patients, healthcare providers, and policymakers about the potential risks of clomiphene use.

India is the world's largest edible oil importer, and soybean oil accounts for a major portion of those imports, with implications for the Indian economy. Despite being the 4th largest globally in terms of harvested soybean area and 5th largest in terms of production, India is still heavily dependent on imports to meet the vegetable oil requirement for its population. It is therefore imperative to understand the dynamics and trends in India's soybean production to help the country achieve self-sufficiency in edible oils. This study provides the first spatially explicit analysis of soybean in India, using long-term spatial and temporal statistics at national and subnational levels, using spatial and temporal statistical analysis models to examine the historical trends and its future prospects. Our analysis details the overall soybean expansion across the country and the increase in production but we also note that the annual growth rate has declined in each consecutive decade even though the area continues to expand. The average national yield has been stagnant at around 1 T/Ha but for some of the low-producing districts, a higher yield of more than 3 T/ha is reported. For most major producing districts, soybean yields are below 1.5 T/Ha. The state of Madhya Pradesh which was the major soybean producer is now matched by the state of Maharashtra in terms of production, however, Madhya Pradesh still has the largest area under soybean. We analyzed soybean hotspot expansion in India and found that the mean center of the soybean area and production has shifted approximately 93 km towards the south and 24 km to the west as the crop is rapidly being adopted in the southern and western parts of India expanding the hotspot in these parts. District-level analysis showed that the total number of districts constituting hotspots of soybean cultivation in India has increased from 29 to 42 in three decades. Furthermore, analysis of soybean oil and meal consumption with respect to the national population, import, export, domestic production, GDP per capita, and price of soybean oil and meal suggests that soybean oil and meal are highly correlated with GDP per capita and population, indicating that consumption of soybean oil and meal is likely to increase as GDP per capita increases, and future demand is expected to rise with the anticipated growth in the Indian population. Increased soybean production can play a significant role in increasing national food security for India and reducing dependence on foreign oil imports and also help the economy with soy meal exports. Understanding the spatiotemporal variability in area and yield will help target interventions to increase production. Given the overall low yields with high variability in production, particularly in recent years primarily due to successive extreme rains and droughts in major producing districts and the overall need to increase production to meet the country's demand, there is a pressing need for government policies and research aimed at narrowing the yield gap and developing soybean varieties that are more productive and resilient to climate change.

With its increasing use in the treatment of thrombocytopenia, avatrombopag's associated adverse events (AEs) pose a major challenge to its clinical application. This study aims to comprehensively study AEs associated with avatrombopag by using real-world evidence. We curated AE reports for avatrombopag from the first quarter of 2018 to the fourth quarter of 2023 in the US Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. AEs were coded using the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities of Preferred Terms and System Organ Classes. The reporting odds ratio, proportional reporting ratio, Bayesian confidence propagation neural network, and multi-item Gamma-Poisson Shrinker were used to investigate the relationship between avatrombopag and AE reports. Among 9,060,312 reported cases in the FAERS database, 1211 reports listed avatrombopag as "primary suspected" drug. Disproportionality analysis identified 44 preferred terms across 17 organ systems met the criteria for at least one of the four algorithms. The most commonly reported AEs were platelet count decreased (20.2%), headache (16.7%), platelet count increased (11.9%), platelet count abnormal (6.3%), contusion (2.7%), pulmonary embolism (2.3%), and deep vein thrombosis (2.1%). Unexpected AEs such as seasonal allergy, rhinorrhea, antiphospholipid syndrome, ear discomfort, and photopsia were also observed. Excluding the other serious outcomes, hospitalization (34.6%) was the most frequently reported serious outcome, followed by death (15.4%). Most reported AEs occurred within the first 2 days of initiating avatrombopag therapy, and the median onset time was 60 days. We identified new and unexpected AEs with clinical use of avatrombopag, and our results may provide valuable information for clinical monitoring and identifying risks associated with avatrombopag.

BACKGROUND: Minoritized racial/ethnic groups and women in the United States (US) are disproportionately burdened by food insecurity, which likely contributes to disparities in cardiovascular health (CVH). Disparities are projected to widen due to the worsening climate crisis that is straining the agricultural system including food supplies. Nonetheless, studies have not investigated the relationship between food security status and 'ideal' CVH in a large, nationally-representative and racially/ethnically diverse US sample. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated household food security status in relation to 'ideal' CVH among US adults (N = 157,001) using 2014-2018/2020 National Health Interview Survey data. Food security status was defined as very low, low, marginal, or high. A summed score of 4 health behaviors and 3 clinical factors totaling 7 different measures was dichotomized (yes/no) to assess modified 'ideal' CVH (mICVH). Using Poisson regression with robust variance, we estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% CIs of mICVH by household food security status. We stratified models by sex/gender and race/ethnicity. Very low food security prevalence was higher among non-Hispanic (NH)-Black (8.0%) compared to Hispanic/Latinx (5.1%), NH-White (3.1%) and NH-Asian (1.7%) adults. The association between very low versus high food security and mICVH was stronger among women (PR = 0.23 [95% CI: 0.17-0.31]) than men (PR = 0.48 [95% CI: 0.35-0.66]). Compared to NH-White adults with high food security, racially/ethnically minoritized groups with very low to high food security were generally less likely (range: [PRvery low = 0.25[95% CI: 0.14-0.44] - [PRhigh = 0.88 [95% CI: 0.79-0.97]) to meet mICVH criteria. CONCLUSIONS: Food insecurity was associated with lower mICVH prevalence and racially/ethnically minoritized groups were disproportionately burdened.

BACKGROUND: Valbenazine is used for tardive movement disorders in adults. Current studies on its safety are mostly from clinical trials and small case reports, limiting information on rare adverse reactions. This study investigated valbenazine-related adverse event (AE) risk signals using the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: Valbenazine AEs data were collected from the FAERS database from 2017 Q2 to 2023 Q1, employing methods like reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), Bayesian confidence propagation neural network, and empirical Bayesian geometric mean. RESULTS: After data cleaning and drug screening, there were 20,837 AEs primarily suspecting valbenazine, involving 26 system organ classes and 125 AEs related to valbenazine at the preferred terms level. AEs related to valbenazine were mainly concentrated in nervous system disorders, general disorders and administration site conditions, and psychiatric disorders. Eye disorders and gastrointestinal disorders are new AEs not labeled in the valbenazine instructions. In addition, some new potential AE signals were found, such as Tardive dyskinesia and eyelid function disorder. CONCLUSION: The common AEs of valbenazine in the real world are consistent with the instructions, but there are some newly discovered suspicious AEs.

Older adults vulnerable to food insecurity are at risk of poor psychological and physical health. Poor public infrastructure or proximity to food sources can exacerbate risk of food insecurity. Reduced statutory services for social care has heightened the responsibility on third sector organisations and community-led volunteering, essential to supporting healthy ageing in place and reducing the inequalities of ageing. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how older adults' volunteering with a third sector organisation focused on food access supports food security and builds social capital for socially or economically marginalised older adults within rural and food desert communities. The study aims to bridge the knowledge gap of how volunteering in vulnerable geographies affects food insecurity and community. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven older (55+) volunteer 'meal makers' working with the third sector organisation Food Train and its 'Meal Makers' project. Interview recordings were transcribed and thematically analysed. Ecomap methodology was used to illustrate the lived experiences of older adult volunteers as told through the interviews. Two themes were identified by Thematic Analysis: (1) Networks, connectedness, and exposure to social capital, and (2) Supplementary support. This study finds that older adult volunteers are well placed within community interventions supporting food insecure older adults in rural or food desert communities. Ecomaps demonstrated that high social capital volunteers can mediate food access barriers and highlighted points of local knowledge and social connection. Volunteer engagement provides opportunities for food secure older adults to share local knowledge and build networks of food support and social inclusion for food insecure older adults. Older age volunteering should be advocated as a multi-faceted intervention promoting mutual health and wellbeing in volunteer and beneficiary.

This study assessed the impact of safety nets on food insecurity in households with people with disabilities (PWD) in Nigeria. Using data from the 2019 Nigeria General Household Survey, we assessed the risk of experiencing food insecurity among households and the moderating role of safety nets using households without PWDs as a reference. PWD households were three times more likely to experience severe food insecurity compared to households without PWDs. The impact of the safety net program on the risk of food insecurity showed that receiving social benefits had little effect among households with disabled members experiencing severe food insecurity.

COVID-19 has a deep impact on the economic, environmental, and social life of the global population. Particularly, it disturbed the entire agriculture supply chain due to a shortage of labor, travel restrictions, and changes in demand during lockdowns. Consequently, the world population faced food insecurity due to a reduction in food production and booming food prices. Low-income households face food security challenges because of limited income generation during the pandemic. Thus, there is a need to understand comprehensive strategies to meet the complex challenges faced by the food industry and marginalized people in developing countries. This research is intended to review the agricultural supply chain, global food security, and environmental dynamics of COVID-19 by exploring the most significant literature in this domain. Due to lockdowns and reduced industrial production, positive environmental effects are achieved through improved air and water quality and reduced noise pollution globally. However, negative environmental effects emerged due to increasing medical waste, packaging waste, and plastic pollution due to disruptions in recycling operations. There is extensive literature on the effects of COVID-19 on the environment and food security. This study is an effort to review the existing literature to understand the net effects of the pandemic on the environment and food security. The literature suggested adopting innovative policies and strategies to protect the global food supply chain and achieve economic recovery with environmental sustainability. For instance, food productivity should be increased by using modern agriculture technologies to ensure food security. The government should provide food to vulnerable populations during the pandemic. Trade restrictions should be removed for food trade to improve international collaboration for food security. On the environmental side, the government should increase recycling plants during the pandemic to control waste and plastic pollution.

This study investigates the impact of spatio- temporal correlation using four spatio-temporal models: Spatio-Temporal Poisson Linear Trend Model (SPLTM), Poisson Temporal Model (TMS), Spatio-Temporal Poisson Anova Model (SPAM), and Spatio-Temporal Poisson Separable Model (STSM) concerning food security and nutrition in Africa. Evaluating model goodness of fit using the Watanabe Akaike Information Criterion (WAIC) and assessing bias through root mean square error and mean absolute error values revealed a consistent monotonic pattern. SPLTM consistently demonstrates a propensity for overestimating food security, while TMS exhibits a diverse bias profile, shifting between overestimation and underestimation based on varying correlation settings. SPAM emerges as a beacon of reliability, showcasing minimal bias and WAIC across diverse scenarios, while STSM consistently underestimates food security, particularly in regions marked by low to moderate spatio-temporal correlation. SPAM consistently outperforms other models, making it a top choice for modeling food security and nutrition dynamics in Africa. This research highlights the impact of spatial and temporal correlations on food security and nutrition patterns and provides guidance for model selection and refinement. Researchers are encouraged to meticulously evaluate the biases and goodness of fit characteristics of models, ensuring their alignment with the specific attributes of their data and research goals. This knowledge empowers researchers to select models that offer reliability and consistency, enhancing the applicability of their findings.

Although adequate nutritional status during pregnancy is necessary to support optimal fetal development, many low-income women have poor access to fresh, high-nutrient foods. To address these challenges, a pediatric fruit and vegetable (FV) prescription program was expanded to include pregnant women, providing one prescription for fresh FVs worth 15 US dollars during each prenatal office visit for redemption at farmers'/mobile markets. This analysis describes baseline sociodemographic characteristics, food security, and dietary intake among 253 pregnant women in Flint, Michigan in 2022-23. Dietary recall data were collected and analyzed using the Automated Self-Administered 24-h Tool developed by the US National Cancer Institute, with nutrition output reported in relation to adherence to US Dietary Guidelines. Most participants (mean ± SD age 26.51 ± 4.90 years) identified as African American (53%) and were receiving publicly funded health insurance (66%). Most (75%) reported no food insecurity, yet the majority failed to meet dietary recommendations for whole grains (99.3%), vegetables (93.1%), dairy (93.1%), and fruits (69.4%). Moreover, most did not meet micronutrient recommendations through food sources, including vitamin D (100%), iron (98.6%), folic acid (98.6%), vitamin A (82.6%), calcium (68.8%), and vitamin C (62.5%). Results raise deep concerns regarding diet and nutrition among pregnant women in this US city.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a global crisis with unanticipated and diverse consequences. Moreover, the pandemic has considerably impacted food dynamics in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where food systems have already been challenged. These countries also have the highest share of the world's malnourished and food insecure. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the pandemic's impact on food security dimensions (availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability), with a special emphasis on LMICs. According to the results, the pandemic immediately impacted food security by limiting food production and availability. It also had an indirect impact when lockdowns and other confinement measures (e.g., social distancing, movement restrictions) made it more difficult for individuals to access food and maintain a healthy, balanced diet (cf. food utilization). Indeed, with rising unemployment and poverty, access to food has been the most critically undermined aspect of food security. At the utilization level, COVID-19 adversely influences the nutritional state of both individuals and countries, leading to an increase in all forms of malnutrition. Finally, the impact of COVID-19 on the stability dimension is dependent on the length of the pandemic as well as the effectiveness with which recovery plans are followed to ensure universal vaccine availability, among other factors. As a result, including agricultural and food systems in recovery strategies is crucial to mitigating the pandemic's long-term effects on food security.

The aim of the study was to explore the concept of quality food in the opinion of key informants of the food system. This qualitative research included 208 key informants related to the food supply for Brazilian public food services. The participants were grouped into three groups according to their participation in the food system: 1. Food production; 2. Management and marketing; 3. Meal's production process. Key informants answered the following question: "In your opinion, what is quality food?". The answers were analysed through qualitative content analysis. The data analysis resulted in 52 codes grouped into eight categories, expressing the opinion of the study participants about what quality food is: nutritional, sustainable, sensory, hygienic-sanitary, care, regulatory, dependability and symbolic. Nutritional and sustainable dimensions were predominantly considered. The activities carried out in the food system seem to influence the opinion on food quality. The groups linked to food production put more emphasis on the sustainable dimension, followed by the nutritional dimension, while the groups linked to management and marketing and to the meals production process put more emphasis on the nutritional and sensory dimensions. These differences may indicate a difficulty in the transition towards a more sustainable and healthy food system.

Foodborne illness caused by Salmonella spp. is one of the most prevalent public health problems globally, which have brought immeasurable economic burden and social impact to countries around the world. Neither current nucleic acid amplification detection method nor standard culture method (2-3 days) are suitable for field detection in areas with a heavy burden of Salmonella spp. Here, we developed a highly sensitive and accurate assay for Salmonella spp. detection in less than 40 min. Specifically, the invA gene of Salmonella spp. was amplified by recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), followed by Pyrococcus furiosus Argonaute (PfAgo)-based target sequence cleavage, which could be observed by a fluorescence reader or the naked eye. The assay offered the lowest detectable concentration of 1.05 × 101 colony forming units/mL (CFU/mL). This assay had strong specificity and high sensitivity for the detection of Salmonella spp. in field samples, which indicated the feasibility of this assay.

Introducción: esta investigación buscó identificar perfiles de padres y madres según sus prácticas parentales de alimentación (PPA) (monitoreo, restricción, modelo y control infantil) y determinar si los perfiles difieren según su satisfacción con la alimentación (SWFoL), interfaz trabajo-familia, calidad de la dieta de padres y madres e hijos/as adolescentes, tipo de trabajo y características sociodemográficas (nivel socioeconómico, género y edad). Método: la muestra fue de 430 familias biparentales con doble ingreso e hijos/as adolescentes de Santiago, Chile. Se utilizaron el Cuestionario Comprensivo de Prácticas Parentales de Alimentación, la Escala de Satisfacción con la Alimentación (SWFoL), el Índice de Alimentación Saludable Adaptado (IAS) y la Escala de Interfaz trabajo-familia (conflicto trabajo y familia y enriquecimiento trabajo y familia). Resultados: el análisis de perfiles latentes mostró cinco perfiles de padres y madres: a) madres y padres con alto control y restricción (32,1 %); b) madres y padres con alto control y muy bajo monitoreo, restricción y modelo (29,5 %); c) madres con alto monitoreo y padres con bajo control y restricción (18,8 %); d) madres y padres con alto monitoreo (14,9 %); y e) madres y padres con alta restricción y modelo (4,7 %). Conclusión: los perfiles difirieron en los puntajes de SWFoL de padres y madres, conflicto familia-trabajo del padre, enriquecimiento trabajo y familia del padre, calidad de la dieta de los tres miembros de la familia y en el índice de masa corporal de las madres. Los resultados sugieren que los padres y las madres utilizan diferentes combinaciones de PPA según las características de sus familias y lugares de trabajo.(AU)


Background: this research was designed to identifying profiles of parents according to their food parenting practices (FPFP) (monitoring, restriction, modeling and child control) and to determine whether the profiles differed according to their satisfaction with food-related life (SWFoL),work-family interface, diet quality of parents and adolescent type of work and sociodemographic characteristics (socioeconomic level, genderand age). Methods: the sample consisted of 430 two-parent dual-income families with adolescent in Santiago, Chile. The Comprehensive questionnaire of Parental Eating Practices, Satisfaction with Food-related Life scale (SWFoL), Adapted Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) and Work-Family Interface Scale (work-family conflict and work-family enrichment) were used. Results: latent profile analysis showed five profiles of fathers and mothers: a) mothers and fathers with high control and restraint (32.1 %); b) mothers and fathers with high control and very low monitoring, restriction and modeling (29.5 %); c) mothers with high monitoring and fathers with low control and restriction (18.8 %); d) mothers and fathers with high monitoring (14.9 %); and e) mothers and fathers with high restraint and modeling (4.7 %). Conclusions: the profiles differed in fathers’ and mothers’ SWFoL scores, fathers’ work-family conflict, fathers’ work-family enrichment, diet quality of all three family members, and mothers’ body mass index. The results suggest that fathers and mothers use different combinations of FPP according to the characteristics of their families and workplaces.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Social media has the potential to be of great value in understanding patterns in public health using large-scale analysis approaches (eg, data science and natural language processing [NLP]), 2 of which have been used in public health: sentiment analysis and topic modeling; however, their use in the area of food security and public health nutrition is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the potential use of NLP tools to gather insights from real-world social media data on the public health issue of food security. METHODS: A search strategy for obtaining tweets was developed using food security terms. Tweets were collected using the Twitter application programming interface from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021, filtered for Australia-based users only. Sentiment analysis of the tweets was performed using the Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoner. Topic modeling exploring the content of tweets was conducted using latent Dirichlet allocation with BigML (BigML, Inc). Sentiment, topic, and engagement (the sum of likes, retweets, quotations, and replies) were compared across years. RESULTS: In total, 38,070 tweets were collected from 14,880 Twitter users. Overall, the sentiment when discussing food security was positive, although this varied across the 3 years. Positive sentiment remained higher during the COVID-19 lockdown periods in Australia. The topic model contained 10 topics (in order from highest to lowest probability in the data set): "Global production," "Food insecurity and health," "Use of food banks," "Giving to food banks," "Family poverty," "Food relief provision," "Global food insecurity," "Climate change," "Australian food insecurity," and "Human rights." The topic "Giving to food banks," which focused on support and donation, had the highest proportion of positive sentiment, and "Global food insecurity," which covered food insecurity prevalence worldwide, had the highest proportion of negative sentiment. When compared with news, there were some events, such as COVID-19 support payment introduction and bushfires across Australia, that were associated with high periods of positive or negative sentiment. Topics related to food insecurity prevalence, poverty, and food relief in Australia were not consistently more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic than before the pandemic. Negative tweets received substantially higher engagement across 2019 and 2020. There was no clear relationship between topics that were more likely to be positive or negative and have higher or lower engagement, indicating that the identified topics are discrete issues. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we demonstrated the potential use of sentiment analysis and topic modeling to explore evolution in conversations on food security using social media data. Future use of NLP in food security requires the context of and interpretation by public health experts and the use of broader data sets, with the potential to track dimensions or events related to food security to inform evidence-based decision-making in this area.

RESUMO

Food security (FS) is a powerful social determinant of health (SDOH) and is crucial for human and planetary health. The objectives of this article are to (i) provide clarity on the definitions of FS and nutrition security; (ii) provide a framework that clearly explains the links between the two constructs; (iii) summarize measurement approaches, and (iv) illustrate applications to monitoring and surveillance, policy and program design and evaluation, and research, mainly based on the ongoing rich experience with food insecurity (FI) scales. A clear and concise definition of FI and corresponding frameworks are available. There are different methods for directly or indirectly assessing FI. The best method(s) of choice need to be selected based on the questions asked, resources, and time frames available. Experience-based FI measures disseminated from the United States to the rest of the world in the early 2000s became a game changer for advancing FI research, policy, program evaluation, and governance. The success with experience FI scales is informing the dissemination, adaptation, and validation of water insecurity scales globally. The many lessons learned across countries on how to advance policy and program design and evaluation through improved FS conceptualization and measurement should be systematically shared through networks of researchers and practitioners.
