Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of Pittsburgh-Department of Biological Sciences, Undergraduate Medical Research Fellow

Researched enzyme mechanisms controlling muscle-specific turnover of reporter proteins under the supervision of Dr. Lewis Jacobson.
Created and maintained genetic strains of Caenorhabditis elegans and quantified intracellular degradation products using biochemical, pharmacological, and immunohistochemical techniques

Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

The first project was a joint undertaking between the departments of otolaryngology and radiology and investigated the utility of pre-operative imaging of oral tumors using computed tomography oral imaging studies.
The second project was a retrospective study of the learning curve in acoustic neuroma surgery that will correlate twenty-five separate variables in 308 patients over 12 years.

Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Designed and prepared a therapeutic DNA vaccine for patients with cervical cancer under the supervision of Dr. Liang Qiao. Packaged human papillomavirus-like particles with human co-stimulatory protein B7.2 DNA using in vitro gene transfer techniques.
Assessed vaccine integrity using western gel electrophoresis, FACS, liquid scintillation spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Evaluated vaccine efficacy using in vitro cytotoxicity assays and in vivo murine models.

Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine – Division of Pediatric Surgery

Investigated the role of n-docosanol in preventing progressive burn ischemia using a rat burn model under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Krummel and Dr. H. Paul Ehrlich.
Performed relevant surgical procedures and was responsible for surgical anesthesia and post-operative care of laboratory animals. Analyzed affected areas using laser Doppler, vascular casting, and histological techniques.
Also researched the role of TGF-B1 in fetal wound healing using a null mutant murine model. Performed murine fetal microsurgery and prepared organ culture samples for immunohistochemical analysis. Confirmed transgene presence in fetal mice using the polymerase chain reaction.

Georgetown-Washington National Eye Center

The first project was a major review of the ophthalmic consequences of terrorist attacks in collaboration with Colonel William P. Madigan, MD, U.S. Army ophthalmology advisor to the Surgeon General.
The second project was with Dr. Albert S. Cytryn and involved quantitating alpha-receptors on Muller’s muscle in thyroid eye disease with the help of a specialized laboratory at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.
The third project was a case report of renal medullary carcinoma metastatic to the orbit in conjunction with Narieman A. Nik and Ahmed A. Hidayat of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. The fourth project involved using liquid hydroxyapatite for treating enophthalmos in anophthalmic sockets. The final two projects were case reports detailing atypical presentations of lid malposition.
