Nick Cannon Breaks Down His “Divorce Freestyle”

Just in time for Father’s Day.

Nick Cannon’s new track, “Divorce Freestyle,” addresses any rumors about his current relationship with Mariah Carey and their impending divorce.

“I named the song ‘Divorce Papers’ to throw it back in everyones face,” Nick Cannon tells Genius in an annotation. “The media made up a lie that I was holding up the process saying I wouldn’t sign the divorce papers. So I was like, ‘You want 'Divorce Papers’ well here you go!‘ The lawyers line was also me releasing a little frustration at the attorneys on both sides because lawyers always think they control the clients and they cause most of the friction especially since my ex and I get along. So ultimately the writing process was and continues to be therapeutic for me.”

He speaks on their marriage, as well, and issues his family originally had with Mariah. On the track, he raps:

Besides addressing his divorce, he speaks on recently challenging Eminem to a $100,000 rap battle. Their history runs deep—Mariah Carey dropped a song called “Obsessed,” which was targeted at Eminem, who eventually clapped back with “The Warning.” After that, Nick spent years firing shots back.

“I am a huge Eminem fan and always have been,” Nick says. “I believe he is one of the best MCs and artists of our time. We all know in his earlier music how much he expressed his love and care for his daughter and the frustrations of being a single father.”
