Our weight loss theory could be completely wrong!
Haven’t we all been believing all this while that weight loss is all about how much calories we are consuming in a day vis a vis how many we are burning? Also, we have been told time and again that it’s 70 per cent diet (some argue it’s even higher) and remaining exercise, when it comes to weight loss. And it all kind of makes sense too, so why doubt it, right? Well, if international celebrity nutritionist Dana James is to be believed, we have got it all wrong.

Dana says that it’s not about calories and workout alone but it’s a more holistic approach that leads to weight loss. She argues that regardless of how well you are eating, if you are not sleeping well or have your hormones acting up, or have unexpressed emotions or gut inflammation, all of this could prove hazardous to your weight loss goal.
Her weight loss equation looks a bit like this:
Change in body fat = Food + Movement + Hormones + Sleep + Gut Microbiome + Inflammation + Medication + Unexpressed Emotions + Genes.
She believes that even if you manage to lose weight with eating right and working out, but are suffering from other issues, it will be difficult for you to keep that weight off for a long time. This is how people who lose weight gain it all back after some time.
A workout-only or a diet-only approach may get you temporary results but if you wish to keep the weight off forever, it is important to keep into consideration other important areas as well.

There have been ample studies that have proven that people who don’t get to sleep enough, often end up piling weight. The same holds true for people that have gut issues, since gut bacteria is extremely important to our well-being. It goes without saying that mental health can also impact our weight loss goals adversely. Unexpressed emotions usually convert into overeating for many, thus making it extremely important to focus on overall well being and not weight alone.
While most of these factors can be controlled by you, your genes is something that's beyond your control. But that should not discourage you from leading a healthy lifestyle. In fact it should give you more reasons to stay fit.
So, take a wholistic approach and address all these issues if you wish to lose weight in a healthy manner.
