Mindfulness Recordings for use in class By Juliette Bentley

The importance of stopping, taking time to breath, centre, reacquaint oneself with oneself, is so important. Not only does it allow the mind to still, it also allows one's life to open to many more opportunities as well as savour the life we have now. The recordings below are part of a collection of recordings I created to use with my students at an all girls Catholic College. They are here for others to use as well as being an example of how Adobe voice can be used as a service to others. The recordings are generally between 3 to 7 minutes and are a good way to centre stressed, excited or otherwise distracted students. They can be played to the class or used discretely by students using earphones. I normally follow up with a journal reflection in a OneNote Class notebook where I am able to read their reflections but they are not able to see one another's work.

I dedicate this work to my incredible mum who taught me to savour each day

Too often we nod our heads while others talk and continue with our own mind chatter, depriving ourselves of the gift of another's thoughts and depriving the speaker the respect of listening and valuing their words. It isn't an intentional behaviour but rather one born of busyness and we need to take time to recalibrate and develop the self discipline that mindful listening requires.

Another casualty of a busy life is the neglect of enjoying and savouring the simple pleasures that grace our days. Sometimes, the seemingly insignificant things become those treasures. Today the scent of my mother's perfume brings her back to me in a fraction of a second and with it, the remembrance of her love and laughter. The recording below aims to help students refocus and enjoy an oasis of pleasure in a busy day.

Being mindful of the words we say, the intentions behind them and the way they fall on the ears of those we are speaking to, is such an important part of taking responsibility and caring. The caring must be honest but can often be more kindly than is often the case. Irrespective of age, we can all benefit from taking a moment to pay attention to the words we say and consider how they make others both feel and act.

Sometimes we carry the stones of hurt, grief, disappointment or regret. We burden ourselves in ways that can inhibit our enjoyment of the now. Sometimes we need to take time to examine who we are hurting by holding on to such negative emotions and then, where we can, let them go so that we can embrace life and its joys.

Our Grade 11 students coach the Grade 7 students and the following recording helps to direct and clarify their purpose.

A colleague and I created an Adobe Voice Video for a meditation based upon The Road Less Travelled by Robert Frost. This was used by senior students in a unit on Meaning and Purpose.

This page will be added to as each new mindfulness video is created. The place of Seligman's Positive Psychology in an educational paradigm is really instrumental in equipping young people with life skills that enable them to appreciate their responsibility for their attitudes, mental health and happiness. I hope you find them useful.
