More details about Meltan, the newest addition to the Pokédex, reveal how players will be able to capture the Pokémon once Pokémon: Let’s Go! launches next month. Two videos explain the item necessary for catching the tiny steel-type Pokémon, as well as hint at another big piece of info we have yet to learn about the mythical monster.
The second video in an ongoing series about Professor Willow (of Pokémon Go) and Professor Oak (Pokémon: Let’s Go!) follows the pair as they make another research breakthrough. Meltan, it appears, can only be transferred from Willow’s world into the Kanto region via the Mystery Box, an item that players can only unlock by connecting the mobile game to the Nintendo Switch one.
“Sending Pokémon from Pokémon Go into one of the Nintendo Switch titles will get you certain items in the app, such as Candies for the species of Pokémon you sent,” The Pokémon Company explained. “However, the first time you send a Pokémon, you’ll also be able to get a very special item: a Mystery Box!”
The Mystery Box, once opened, allows players to find a Meltan in their Pokémon Go games. After battling and capturing it, the item closes itself again; the way to reset it is to again transfer a Pokémon from mobile to console.
This makes Meltan the first Pokémon that can only be captured in Pokémon Go. Of course, players will also need to have access to Pokémon: Let’s Go! in order to receive the item that unlocks the monster; but a lapsed Pokémon Go player may want to get back on that. Meltan can also join players in the Switch game after they’ve caught it, so at least there’s that.
And there’s one more exciting thing to come about Meltan, if another video about the Pokémon is teasing what we think it’s teasing. At the very end of the video below, a group of Meltan are gathered together — until a cut reveals a silhouette of a new monster in their place, which appears to be made out of the group when combined.
“I think Meltan still holds a greater secret to be uncovered,” reads a journal page in the clip’s last shot.
Sure looks like Meltan is set to evolve, but we likely won’t know for sure until after Pokémon: Let’s Go! launches on Nov. 16 for Switch.
