Annual town barbecue kicks off Westport's summer

The Westport Fire Department and Community Association welcomes all to the town’s July 7 summer celebration

The annual community barbecue on Westport Island will be held next Saturday, July 7 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the old Town Hall, Route 144. This wonderful event, open to the public, is almost like a family reunion – a fun evening to catch up with old friends and meet new Westport residents. The Volunteer Fire Department will grill up delicious chicken and hot dogs, and serve corn on the cob, baked beans and coleslaw. The Westport Community Association tempts all with delicious desserts.

Adding to the merriment will be The Old Grey Goose, a very popular acoustic Maine-based band, with fantastic vocal harmonies backed by guitar, accordion, bass, fiddle and mandolin – guaranteed to keep young and old dancing!

There will be kids games and of course “Dunk the Chief.” The barbecue is donation-only: what gets tossed into the big fireman’s boot goes to the Westport Volunteer Fire Department to help cover various costs of the department, including fire-fighting gear and equipment.

The WVFD, providing fire protection and emergency medical services on the island, is supported by Town funds, a bottle drop, annual fundraising, this summer barbeque, and donations for community services such as burning brush and filling pools. In addition to providing first responder services, the WVFD firefighters attend weekly meetings, attend training for certifications to everything from operating fire equipment to learning firefighting science and tactics, and contribute time to maintain the fire house and fire equipment. WVFD equipment includes a foam-capable fire truck, a tanker, a brush truck, a rescue truck and an inflatable boat for water rescue.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the barbecue!
