Clinical Trend of the Week (February 24 – March 2): Otitis Media
A condition that is seemingly everywhere at the moment and a study about treatment resistance resulted in this week’s top search term. This year’s flu season has proven to be one of the most severe on record. The fact that Haemophilus influenzae is a common cause of otitis media helps explain why the latter condition has been experiencing an increase in searches. In addition, an upcoming study in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal analyzed trends of antibiotic resistance. That study found that amoxicillin is likely to remain the first-line antibiotic treatment for acute otitis media in children, except among those who also have conjunctivitis and should then receive amoxicillin/clavulanate. From concerns about the flu to an analysis of what the best treatment is for this common condition, the reasons why otitis media was this week’s top search term are particularly timely.
