Opportunity Council - Housing & Asset Coordinator - SJHD

The San Juan Islands present unique issues for individuals living on low incomes or facing homelessness. As a key tourist destination and retirement community, the islands are faced with large seasonal shifts in employment and population. This equates to housing cost and supply issues and unreliable employment. The role of the VISTA in the first year will be to focus on the housing needs and inventory through the Point in Time count and assessing the housing inventory. The VISTA will develop Asset Building initiatives to assist in stabilizing these households. These efforts will help the organizations better leverage available resources while facilitating coordination and cohesiveness between islands. This project is a collaboration between the San Juan Health Department, where the VISTA will be hosted, and the Resource Centers on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Islands. With involvement from other key community partners and government agencies. A VISTA working on this project will need strong leadership skills, ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively and be an excellent communicator. Travel between islands will be required on a frequent basis.

Member Duties : The VISTA in this project will be focused on fulfilling the following goals: 1 -Improve homeless housing systems, including Coordinated Entry and Point in Time (PIT) count in order to better understand housing needs and increase the efficiency and effectiveness through which people are housed in San Juan County. Focusing on these two systems we will help maximize funds for homelessness and resources for those experiencing homelessness. 2 – Develop a comprehensive housing and landlord inventory for the county. This would allow for a clearer picture of available rental stock and allow the resource centers to liase with current landlords in order to develop the necessary relationships to expand the housing inventory available to low income clients. 3 -Assess and implement Asset Building initiatives in order to help low-income households build financial stability and wealth, providing a pathway out of poverty.
