With a grant from the Maine Dept. of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Camden has another $64,810 to continue construction of the Megunticook Riverwalk recreational trail. The trail, which winds along the river from the lower end of Megunticook Lake, eventually will terminate in downtown Camden.

On Feb. 28, the grant was made official, with $50,000 donated by the state of Maine combined with a local match of $14,810.

The 803-foot-long stone dust recreational trail stretch will pass through natural areas beside the river, and abut residential neighborhoods.

Six-feet-wide, it is designed for walking, running, biking and snowshoeing. The trail also allows for river fishing access.

Last autumn, the Camden-Rockport Pathways Committee celebrated the completion of the Seabright section of the Camden Riverwalk at Seabright Park. That marked the completion of Phase II of the Riverwalk project.

“Ultimately we will have almost 2.5 miles of Riverwalk,” said Geoff Scott, Chairman of the committee, in October 2016.

The broader vision includes a Riverwalk that will extend from the Camden Public Landing to Shirttail Point, on Megunticook River. Roots of the project are included in Camden’s 2012 Downtown Master Plan

Recommendations contained in the Plan included the construction of a riverwalk as not only a means to better use one of the local natural assets but also as a way to bring residents from neighborhoods to and from the downtown and Shirttail Point Park.
