Ernie's the best! His sandwiches are like no other. Bonus: if Ernie is there, it's like visiting an old friend!

Today was my first time trying Ernie's and it did not disappoint!! The lady making my sandwich was very kind, and she makes one heck of a sandwich!! I got Turkey, salami, a bunch of veggies and the special spice mixture.... The spice was phenomenal!!! Not spicy - just so flavorful. They also have tons of chips and drinks inside to pair with your sandwich.
Outside there are about 6 picnic tables to eat it! They were all super clean. Overall a great place to enjoy a lunch. I can't wait to come back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 28, 2023Updated review
A friend mentioned Ernie's the other day, and it's been on my mind, so I decided to go there after work today. I saw that they've updated the area and put in several tables with umbrellas in the yard. That was a nice touch. But that's where the upgrades end.
As I mentioned in my previous review, Ernie is no longer there. Prices have gone up AGAIN, and the sandwiches have gotten markedly smaller. There is a $1 upcharge for corned beef, pastrami and chicken. All of the sides are apparently $5, and there's not very much in the small containers. The women making the sandwiches seemed grumpy, and there are what I consider rude signs all over the place. One even said something to the effect of "Only dummies go up to the counter and hand the cashier a card. THIS IS CASH ONLY!"
I ordered a turkey and corned beef sandwich with lettuce, cucumber and onion on rye. They never told me what kind of cheese they had. And they put so much "love spice" (which seemed to be mostly seasoned salt) on the sandwich that I couldn't finish it -- and not because it was big, because it wasn't. That 2 meat sandwich was $9.
Sadly, I think the era of the charm of Ernie's has passed. I see no need to return.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 3Business owner information

So glad you were able to come and enjoy our outdoor eating area.
Unfortunately, due to the current rise in prices ours had to rise too in order to continue to provide our customers with the highest quality product…we uses boars head products and fresh vegetables daily and that comes at a price.
I am sorry you felt our signs were rude…they are not meant to be they are meant to grab your attention because they are important…we don’t want customers to wait in line only to get to the end and realize we are cash only.
Also our counter in the back is very fragile and cannot bear weight if it is leaned on the potential for breakage is high and could be potentially dangerous.
Our cheese is changed daily one white and one yellow - we put both on unless we are asked not to we are not in the practice of asking what type of cheese you want because there are only two options.
And lastly and most importantly I am so sorry that you felt that our sandwich maker was grumpy this is not a usual occurrence and will be addressed.
As is all other small businesses Ernie’s is working hard to keep up with an ever changing world. Although something’s maybe changing we are working hard to keep the good stuff the same and driving to become better.
We appreciate any and all fees back and appreciate that you took the time to write your review your opinions only help us to get better.Feb 25, 2022Previous reviewI hadn't been back to Ernie's in years. But, I was in the neighborhood so I thought I'd go there again. There was not much of a line & Ernie's no longer there. But the young women who are there are very efficient. The prices have gone up. The one meat sandwich is now $6. But, it's still a pretty good deal, WAY better than the chain places, plus the satisfaction of supporting an independent business that's been around for years.
Nov 7, 2014Previous reviewI waited in line at Ernie's Market for an hour for a sandwich. It's not an outstanding sandwich, but it's bigger than it looks. Ernie is something of a neighborhood legend with a cult-like following. He is well aware of celebrity-like status, and it's well-earned. It honestly didn't feel like an hour wait in the tiny little store because he has a BIG personality. He makes each sandwich to order and treats each customer like an old friend -- even if you've never been there before. But beware, if you're a newbie, as he calls first timers, he cannot cut your sandwich because "rules are rules. And you can't cut it at home. You have to fight it." It really is impossible to walk out of there without a smile on your face. Oh, and he gives you a handful of Hershey's kisses because "Ernie loves ya, baby!"

Great spot! The sandwiches are fantastic and the workers are super nice and fast. I got the Ernie's Bird with everything on it on rye. It was packed, fresh, a bit spicy, and delicious. There is a good amount of outdoor seating as well. Would definitely come back, and recommend this spot to anyone in the area or even visiting Detroit.

Ernie is an institution! I love his schtik and the market - the only place that I can reliably find Better Made's Rainbow chips and pastrami.
I also love taking my immigrant friends to visit Ernie for a completely different experience than they anticipate.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1943031038Nov 8, 2023
When your around the area, even if your not hungry, trust me when I say STOP HERE AND GET THE MONSTER! You'll thank me later! The flavor is amazing! And there is always a line! But trust me; it's worth the wait!!

Ernie's has been a staple in Oak Park since 1955. Despite his age, Ernie still occasionally makes the sandwiches himself. The interior has a typical, small market look to it. It is a cash only establishment. There is outdoor seating if you prefer to eat on site. The sandwiches have a home made feel to it. There are 4 bread/bun options, 2 kinds of cheese, and 7 different meats. Upon your first time, it is "tradition" to not have your sandwich cut in half. The "monster" was the obvious choice for me, as it includes both cheeses and all 7 meats. The old school vibe and the sandwiches make Ernie's a must for any locals who have never been.
