What we've been up to this term

 

We finished two main projects this term. The first one, part of the Service Experience Design for Social and Corporate Innovation unit, students worked with Minoxsys, a healthcare software developer, to explore patient-facing innovation. This project was led by Cordula Friedlander, with guest lectures and workshops with Alison Prendiville and Adrian Gradinar.

As part of the Collaborative unit, students worked with Lambeth Council, Adult Social Care department, to develop a screening mechanism. Students interacted with a wide variety of stakeholders to develop innovative services, led by Cordula Friedlander and Hena Ali.

In the Global Design Futures unit Students worked on speculative design workshops with Georgina Voss, in preparation for their project on the Future of Government 2030+, commissioned by the PolicyLab EU, and working with the UAL Public Collaboration Lab and Camden Council, led by Lara Salinas. In addition as part of this unit students visited the Digital Catapult and were involved in workshops around technology-driven challenges, together with students from the MA Design Management and Cultures.

Minoxsys - 14 week group project as part of Service Experience Design for Social and Corporate Innovation unit



Minoxsys specialise in Care Pathway Management systems for monitoring the patient journey, self-care and improving patient flow throughout the healthcare environment. Working with the NHS in the UK and public and private healthcare globally. www.minoxsys.com
 
The Challenge   Our clients vision is to provide a real-time service for patients to help them with their care pathway, to improve the understanding of the care plan and consequently improve patient flow in hospitals. Patients will be able to see their journey and have insights with relevant content delivered to them to improve their health outcomes and promote self-care.

Student Work   Students responded to the challenge by working with clinicians, patient groups, charities such as Age UK, with the client and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for development. Seven groups of four or five students defined their specific brief and delivered innovative service solutions.
 

Lambeth Council Adult Social Care - 10 week group project as part of Collaborative unit.


Lambeth Council, Adult Social Care was the main external partner in this live brief. The focus of this collaboration was on understanding the barriers around commonly used self-assessment tools and exploring a more positive approach based on the abilities (rather than the in-abilities) of the care user.
In this project students applied service design methods to asset map the different localities in the Borough of Lambeth and the services provided by the voluntary community sector, i.e. Age UK Lambeth. Each team  collaborated closely with Lambeth Adult Social Care, its partners and members of the community, i.e. potential care users.

The Challenge   Working in student teams, with potential service users and with the Lambeth voluntary sector, explore and develop concepts for screening tools. The aim is to devise effective interactive and/or engaging tools that can be used by the various stakeholders to better integrate the voluntary and community services supporting a more preventative approach to adult social care.

Student Work  Students were assigned an area of Lambeth and did in-depth ethnographic work in the area. They engaged with Adult Social Services as well as service users and charities that work in the area. The seven groups of students delivered in-depth research as well as service concepts.

Global Design Futures

Workshops and Future of Government 2030+ project as part of Global Design Futures unit

Students started off the Global Design Futures unit with a series of lectures and workshops by Georgina Voss, on Critical and Speculative Design, Uncertain Politics / Hopeful Monsters (workshop) and Complex Systems / Future Tarot (workshop).

As part of the same unit students have just started working on The Future of Government 2030+: A Citizen Centric Perspective on New Governance Models is a project carried out by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in collaboration with the Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology (DG CNECT).

The overall aim of the project is to better understand the changing relationships among citizens, businesses and governments. New actors and responsibilities are emerging and we need more trust and accountability. Through individuals’ needs and future expectations, we can envisage alternative pictures of the future.
With support from six different countries and design higher education institutions JRC intends to stimulate a debate with citizens, businesses, civil society organizations, policy-makers, civil servants and others around possible, plausible and desirable future government models.

Public Collaboration Lab will organize, host, document and report on a design project exploring the future of government from 2030 onwards, in collaboration with:
  • 29 graduate MA Service Experience Design and Innovation (MASEDI) students at the University of the Arts London (UAL);
  • academic design researchers at the Public Collaboration Lab (PCL) (UAL), and London College of Communication (LCC)
  • officers from the London Borough of Camden (LBC), Strategy and Change.

Value of Knowledge Exchange - Dr. Lara Salinas

What is the value of knowledge exchange activities with arts and humanities higher education institutions?

In her role as Senior Research Fellow in Knowledge Exchange, Lara is carrying out a one-year research project to better understand the distinctive value of arts and design knowledge exchange activities. The overall research aim is to enhance understanding of the value that knowledge exchange activities deliver within the University of the Arts London – and potentially other arts and humanities higher education institutions.

Lara shared research in progress with MA SEDI students, applying novel tools to collaboratively reflect on the value of the projects done to date by the students.



The research in progress will be presented at Cumulus Paris 2018 next April. Two MASEDI alumni have recently joined the project as Research Assistants, and there will be additional opportunities to join the research project for current students as part of their Major Project.


Dr. Lara Salinas - SaveOurAir


Team: Public Data Lab
Title: SaveOurAir: Local Data Stories to Mobilize Action
Location: London and Copenhagen
SaveOurAir will make it easier for city planners, citizens and civil society groups to find or tell ‘data stories’ about air at specific locations – such as a road, a square, a school or a traffic intersection. This project will be carried out through a series of ‘data sprints’. Data sprints are transdisciplinary collectives that assemble over several days to collaboratively explore and visualize a set of research questions. The sprints will include participation from field experts, local citizens and civil society groups. As a result, the ‘data stories platform’ will be co-designed. By facilitating the possibility to build on existing data, the project aims to make the issue of air quality tangible for architects, city planners, activists, educators and others.
 


Dr. Alison Prendiville and Dr. Lara Salinas - Sustainable Design Award with Public Collaboration Lab



The Public Collaboration Lab was a finalist for the Hans Sauer Award 2018.

Adam Thorpe, Alison Prendiville, Lara Salinas, Sarah Rhodes (UAL) and Jon Lloyd (London Borough of Camden) from the Public Collaboration Lab participated in the Social Design Elevation Days 2018 hosted at Impact Hub in Munich.

During three days the event gathered six European social labs to work on developing a design process which can lead to the solution of a challenge faced by another social lab. Public Collaboration Lab worked on Wir Oberndorfer’s challenge of making Kiwitte+, a non-profit free of charge afternoon care service, sustainable.

Public Collaboration Lab didn’t win the award, though we were all happy that Wir Oberndorfer won, and will be able to implement some of the processes proposed!

OS Geovation




Six MA SEDI students and two alumni joined this year's Geovation Challenge as human centred design consultants to the finalist tech teams.

Digital Catapult visit and workshop


Students visited the Digital Catapult and were involved in workshops on technology-driven challenges, together with students from the MA Design Management and Cultures. Students worked on challenges about 5G, Blockchain, Immersive technology, Innovation services and AI. Some students will continue these challenges through their Major Projects.






 

Design Academy (Design Council)



In January 2018, thirty graduate students from the Design School (MA Illustration and Visual Media, Interaction Design Communication, Design Management and Cultures, Graphic Branding and Identify and Service Experience Design and Innovation) participated in the Design Academy at the Design Council

"Design Academy provided an excellent opportunity to further understand the uses of service design methodologies, while tackling the complex social issue of Transforming Ageing. We worked under the leadership of Design Council Associate Daniel Letts, who expertly steered our multi-disciplinary teams to good port by means of the Design Council’s ‘Framework for Innovation’. Working in short weekly sprints over four very intense Wednesdays made us flex our co-creative and collaborative muscles and turned skills at rapid prototyping, communication and project management into lifelines." Speakers this term:


Adrian Gradinar came to give a lecture on his work in healthcare and a prototyping workshop.
Francesco Mazzarella came to give a lecture on his work in craft as well as running a workshop with the students.
Students visited FutureGov and engaged in an in-depth conversation about design in the local government with Kirsty Joan Sinclair.
