Cheapo straight old school soap fragrance. Quite nice IMO, heavily aldehydic as well. I don't see why would it cause allergies, since all mainstream perfumery is ruled by IFRA which is not to harm perfumery, dear snobs. It's to avoid allergenic reactions and other worse problems like skin cancer (Yes, it can happen) from ever happening in this game. Overall, Jovan Musk gives:
Slightly bright, spicy, citrusy, pepper - forward opening.
Aldehydic, carnation (Which is both spice and aldehyde - forward, and an accord typical of masculine perfumery from the 70's and 80's, aldehydic florals with warm spice undertones) and musk - forward drydown. A bit of wood as well.
Poor projection and longevity overall. Only the musk remains as the base note for a good while but not projecting at all since it's an extremely heavy molecule, and heavy molecules don't project.

I don't personally think it's a great or even good value, nor good having. For twice this cost i'd frankly prefer something like Bogart One Man Show, Lapidus Pour Homme, Quorum, Jacomo de Jacomo or even Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui, which outlasts, outperforms and has a much greater complexity and much better scent overall when compared to this. I'd say only worth having if you're a crazy collector, have a particular nostalgia for this one, can handle orange stains on your clothing because it won't project shit on skin, or for some reason, cannot afford other or just particularly wish this scent.

Best wishes.

I wear it when I wanna smell like Waylon Jennings. Warm and comforting.

Nerdboy83

Even though this is a vintage fragrance. I smelled way better musky colognes. I personally think the Middle Eastern one's are ten times better than the American & European brands.

A pleasant soapy & soft musk with poor longevity. I have to layer this with essential oil that is inspired by the fragrance itself to get the performance that I truly desire. Nothing really groundbreaking about this. This is not a crowd pleaser or an attention grabber. But you can still receive compliments.

I would only wear this for.

1)Job/Office.
2)Hanging with the fellas.
3)Gym.
4)Running errands.
5)Dressing casual.
6)Daytime.
7)Fall season.
8)Outdoor activities.

This is something I wouldn't necessarily reach for.

1)Attending a formal affair.
2)Going clubbing.
3)Hanging with women.
4)Dressing sophisticated.
5)Spring, summer, & winter.
6)Trying to be noticed.

It seems to me, I am the lucky one to enjoy this frag right off the bat. I just spritzed myself out of curiosity at the drug store and initial thoughts were "well, could have been better..." Man, it is! Comparing this one to new Narciso Rodriguez Vetiver Musc, I just purchased last week, you would hardly find the difference in the drydown.

This one, however, is much warmer, leaning rather to masculine side, yet not harsh. Rodriguez Vetiver Musc on the other hand feels fresh but definitely unisex, softer in terms of musk. No idea how it used to smell fifty years ago, but it is easily enjoyable for today thirty somethings. You can pull it up and for the price of your average McChicken menu.

Gave it a chance and it absolutely delivers. Honestly surprised in the most positive way.

michaeld2986

I used to wear this in high school and havn't worn it since then. So, I was feeling nostalgic and decided to pick up a bottle and it smells exactly as I remember it. It's sweet and musky and brought back a lot of great memories. It's certainly not a bad scent by any means, but it's a liitle dated compared to fragrances on the market now. I'll probably wear it occasionally around the house or running errands.

On the box it says "It works with your body's natural chemistry, to create a sexy scent. Masculine. Powerful. Persuasive. It's what attracts." Hmmm, this is one of those fragrances that's open to interpretation. It works well with some guys and others, maybe not so much. I like it and I'll keep it.

kade1234

To me this fragrance is one of the worst fragrances I have ever smelt. I would describe it as a very cheap and artificial fragrance that you might expect from the 70s and 80s.

Hennessy909

After a short while, it smells like pesticide.
I wish I was joking, but it's really similar!
It's just been a couple of months since I bought this.
It's not even good as a room freshener.

samtinker

Okay so I did a blind buy on this based upon the review I saw here. I have to agree that it is a good buy for the money. with that being said. This is not the sent for younger guys 25yrs and under. It literally reminds me of a old school African American barber shop. Not saying its a bad. I love smelling how I do when I leave the barbershop. It's a distinct smell that's associated with fresh and clean. Me being a younger guy I still think I can pull this off but no way I would wear this without layering it with something else. Again, It's not a bad scent. It's just has that old fashion barbershop clean smell.

Hennessy909

Smells beautiful and classic, but doesn't linger much. Longevity is poor, but sillage is crazy poor, like 1cm. Unless your nose touches the skin that you sprayed on, you're not getting any scent. It's also super synthetic.
But hey, it's cheap. So....

theLady

I love reading the reviews for this perfume, they are ridiculous.

I purchased what was apparently a HUGE bottle on eBay, it's got orange juice and a tacky silver plastic cap, with the cheapest white atomizer and no collar around it. Is it old? Perhaps, because I sure as heck don't get any top or middle notes. What I do smell though, is really, really lovely. It just misses being cloying, it's just this side of Tabu too-strong, too-sweet, too-sickly amber. So I like it.

I'd love to smell it fresh with all of the notes present, but honestly, this is just fine. It's perfect for a cold, dark night in autumn, just a few days before the winter solstice.

Amber, oakmoss. Warmth. That's it for this bottle.

AquaRegia

Originally marketed as an aphrodisiac and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Jovan Musk stands as a timeless classic with its namesake musky character. This fragrance offers an affordable journey down memory lane, and its distinctive orange-colored juice encapsulates nostalgia in a bottle. While it may not be a complex or versatile modern scent, it serves as an ideal introduction to musk for enthusiasts of all genders.

Jovan Musk provides a reliable performance with decent longevity and projection, making it a valuable addition to your collection. It's not just a great option for your grandparents but also a worthy choice for anyone seeking a comforting and enduring fragrance. With a blend of warm spices, fresh florals, and powdery woods, Jovan Musk presents a sweet and linear profile that remains steadfast throughout the day, and indeed, through the decades. The best part is, this inexpensive gem is likely to last you a lifetime, as it's not a scent you'll need to reach for too often, but when you do, it brings back cherished memories.

SpendThrift74

Reading the comments and comparing them with my experience makes me think Jovan Musk uses some kind of psychedelic cloaking device to confuse the public.

Everyone seems to encounter this fragrance differently. The full range of reactions is present-- from "it's pissy" to "it's too sweet" to "it's too floral" to "it's too masculine" to "I love it" to "I hate it," etc.

What is this stuff?

To me, it's mostly nostalgic. This was the sort of fragrance my brothers and I would get as gifts at Christmas-- usually in little bottles rather than a full presentation. Likely, our parents would get a cheap gift set of Jovan fragrances and parcel out the contents to the four of us.

As to what the fragrance smells like, my nose goes RIGHT to the floral notes! I sniff it off my arm and think, "Men would wear this? It's like a bouquet dipped in honey!" But then, right on the heels of this thought, comes the impression of how pleasant the fragrance is.

Would I wear this out in public? Probably not. It's a little too floral, too sweet, and, well, too "odd" to the modern nose. But, would I wear it on a cool, lazy day around the house. Absolutely! It's like an old graphic t-shirt. You wouldn't wear it to impress anyone, but it's "comfy" and reminds you of happy times.

Update:
The more I visit this fragrance, the more I like it. I would amend my comments above to say that I WOULD wear it in public. I don't know if anyone around me would like to smell this on me. I'm not sure I much care. I can't quantify it, but this fragrance just makes me happy. Jovan Musk brings a smile to my face every time-- a great, big, floral, spicy smile.

Glyph

Jovan's musk fragrances for men and women were so popular during the 70s when they first came out that not only are they still being produced (and much consumed) today, but for many people they remain the reference for what a musk fragrance should be. Musk is used so often in perfumery that people usually know and appreciate the scent of musk even if they've never been able to give a name to the scent before. It's a very airy, graceful, and intimate scent that best approximates, more than anything I know, the beautiful way a baby's head smells.

It can be surprising that Jovan's Musk for Men was so popular during the 1970s when so many absolutely macho fragrances were so popular for men, but in some ways this even enhances the lightness of musk by combining it with fresh notes of citrus and florals and some spices. But the overall accord this produces is not one of delicacy so much it is of cleanliness and airiness. Jovan Musk for Men is far from the most natural or exciting of musk fragrances (and the bottle it comes in is almost hilariously dated), but its popularity attests to how happy it makes so many people feel. And it's so inexpensive you could even use it a room freshener if you only want something fancier and more expensive on your person. This fully deserves its classic status.

RobbieX

It's a soapy musk that is great value and pretty good quality. If you love Tabac - try this gem.

Michel Silencieux

I last owned a bottle of Jovan Musk in 1993 and given that it’s still around, I was curious, and purchased a new bottle last week. It really smells quite close to the scent from the 80s and 90s. Pleasant musky, mildly spicy, mild floral notes with an amber base. There’s not a lot of changing layers to this, and it smells similar from start to finish and lasts about 4 hours on my skin. It starts out a bit soapy and turns powdery on the dry down. For a “cologne” it’s great and it performs more like an eau de toilette.

It smells friendly without being sexy. Quite versatile in terms of seasonal wearability and settings that it could be worn in. Probably more for mature guys over 40, and quite masculine. It reminds me of the musky note I detect in Lagerfeld Classic, but that scent has quite a few extra layers, which this scent does not.

An easy blind buy if you like musky scents as this is very cheap. If you prefer blue style fragrances and punchy citrus notes or vanilla/cinnamon bombs, this fragrance will disappoint you. The bottle and presentation is basic, and the fragrance itself is sort of basic, but I could imagine that creative fragrance buffs could use this to layer another fragrance on top of it.

MrLeBop

My wife first bought this for me early in our marriage. It is the perfect blend of sweet spice, floral, and musk. It is readily available in most US drugstores but smells classier to me than its cheap price would indicate. Some noses may think it leans unisex, and some may think it is not modern but I think it stands the test of time. Better for age 30+. It holds strong happy connections for me. The spice, floral and musk are perfectly balanced and therefore the musk never smells dirty, just masculine. Unlike the musk in Versace L’Homme which is very sexual, it is just romantic in Jovan Musk. Yes, warmly romantic and masculine.

Young Love

Not much to say about this scent. To my nose it's exactly the same as the day it was introduced. Inoffensive powdery musk, with good projection and longevity, at almost the exact same price today as it was in 1973, making it a real bargain if you want to smell like grandad (for great-grandad you'll have to get some "Jade East", which, to my horror, is still available). And for some reason it's still slightly irritating on my skin, so it's going in the bin. But hey, I'm only out ten bucks, and it brought back some memories.

JamesPawn

grand pas scent really grand pa had a bunch of these old bottles back in the day . very 70's the old bottles are smooth while the newer stuff is more harsh at the opening . the older bottles have a more natural deeper notes while the newer ones have chemical notes even though it is a cheap scent it was reformulated in around the early 2000's i think because it lost its smoothness at around that time

Mez0Nez

This is really similar to discontinued Milly-la-foret of Christian Dior, but has more spicy scents, which make it more masculine.

dualaokto

Jovan Musk was meant to be a sexy fragrance, to evoke animal instinct in human by overdosing its animalic aspect, in this case is musk. Well, I got the idea behind it, but the way we interpret scents pretty much depends on our memory, reference, nature, habit and cultural aspect surround us.

I live in Indonesia, in a small village in Yogyakarta regency. Most of moms here would smear telon oil (mix of cajuput, anise, coconut) to their babies and toddlers after showering them, followed by putting lots of baby powder on their babies’ faces and bodies (sometimes they put it so randomly, making their babies look weirdly fun). And this is how my brain interprets the smell of Jovan Musk cologne. I do love this cologne, but the image of clueless babies with random powder all over their faces is too attached with Jovan Musk because to me they smell exactly the same. No wonder, most of baby powder products come with lavenderish-musky smell. So, I usually wearing this cologne after the afternoon shower. Who knows I can mingle well with the babies in the neighborhood if I smell like them?

Ben88

Didn’t like this for the first few days wearing it as all I could detect was pepper and spicy florals, but now I love it. Once you get a feel for the scent it becomes much less harsh and begins to feel soapy musky clean, reminds me of a bubble bath but not in a feminine way, it’s just so clean I love wearing it after a shower. A lot of people say this smells like their grandparents etc but I’m 23 and I think this smells amazing, but for reference I really like clean and fresh fragrances.
Although when testing it on my arm the coloration of the juice stained my skin and left a faint orange patch, so I wouldn’t spray this on clothes

JmThms

Jovan Musk is still my holy grail Musk scent. Musk isn't my favorite thing in terms of olfactory families, but Jovan Musk is completely wearable. And there is a naughty aspect to Jovan Musk's scent profile, as maybe there should be given it's a musk scent. Just think of your favorite movie stars in terms of sex appeal, opening their bedroom door after hours of torrid s3x, and you are standing there on the outside of that door and take in the aroma suddenly escaping that room. That is the smell of Jovan Musk.

SenselessReviews

As he launched into a stirring rendition of "Only the Lonely," the concertgoers scurried away from Roy Orbison. He reeked of lime and pepper, and it was all my fault.

The year was 1984. Mr. Orbison, still a draw with his oldies setlist, chose a part-time Betamax machine repairman to join his US tour. I was officially hired to strut around stage in drag during "Pretty Woman," but I mostly just hauled Mr. Orbison's belongings from city to city. These included his trademark tinted glasses, his guitar, and a potato sack containing his fragrances.

I say "fragrances," but in reality Mr. Orbison wore only one cologne: "Jovan Musk." Since he was nervous about running out, he had four bottles on his person at all times -- and another 20 or so in the potato sack.

Each night before his show, Mr. Orbison dabbed a tiny amount of "Jovan Musk" behind each earlobe. That's just what he did the evening of September 14, 1984. He smelled gorgeously masculine, like the collective cup sweat of the "Miracle on Ice" US men's hockey team.

Then, as I stood atop the staircase leading onstage, I dropped the potato sack. It crashed and rolled, breaking every bottle of "Jovan Musk" inside. An orange plume knocked Mr. Orbison to the ground. He grimaced. He gagged. He briefly turned orange. But in a testament to his professionalism, he did go on stage.

It was a short show. Mr. Orbison had barely sung the words "there goes my baby" in between coughs when audience members began to flee. In the ultimate overspray, Mr. Orbison had mutated into a stink bomb in dark glasses. The evening was encapsulated in a New York Post piece headlined "Only the Colognely," complete with a photo of Mr. Orbison singing to an empty auditorium with a clothespin on his nose.

Ashamed, I left the Roy Orbison tour that night. Years later I became Bubbles the chimpanzee's handler during Michael Jackson's "Bad" world tour. As far as I know, that was the last time Mr. Orbison wore "Jovan Musk." And as far as I am concerned, "Jovan Musk" is dead to me.

Royal family ss

Soapy clean musky. If that is your thing, you can't go wrong with this sexy scent. It’s very sexy in my humble opinion.

It’s interesting that when things get cheap, people are like: this can’t be great! it’s bad or normal. This is a great fragrance, and yes it’s only 10$.

Performance is very good for first 2hour (big projection and good sillage) then it’s get closer to the skin and stay for a long time.

Review based on 2021 bottle

thefreshzonetiktok

Get what u get for the price. It is a decent fragrance. Let me explain how it smells... Smells like you are outdoors with a bunch of deer, but then you and the deer get teleported into a urinal stall in a restaurant. It smells like those urinal sponge soapy fragrance mixed with the outdoors muskiness.

cm66

Underrated 70's gem. 3-4 sprays of this on a cool/bamy day,...Will put alot of designer/niche fragrances to shame!

Lwjm

A lovely, warm fragrance that lasts all day and very much "is what it is". That is to say, its linear, it smells the same at 5 minutes as 5 hours. It's cheap, unique, wearable, durable.

11Mic22hael33

What a surprise. A recent 2022 bottle. So cheap, yet so good. Not cheap smelling. The most dominant notes are a very smooth and creamy Sandalwood, gorgeous Carnation and Lavender, a deep rich Amber, fruity Lime, and a very sexy Musk. One of the all time greatest low cost fragrances in history. I keep reaching for this one, leaving all of my $60 to $120 fragrances to collect dust. 50 years of history and Jovan Musk is still relevant today. Just recently discovered it and very happy that I did. I wish I would have known years ago. I will be stocking up.

ShaunTY

I expected too much from Jovan Musk and was disappointed in the actual scent, rather than the performance aspect. On me, it has good mileage and sillage performance. But the scent itself is....problematic. Much too cloyingly sweet from the outset. Any more sweetness and it would have been 'sickeningly sweet'. Neither does it settle down much from that sweet 'high'. This was quite a shock to me. From all reports, I expected a strong, masculine 70s style scent. Instead, I got something akin to a sweet ladies perfume(!) This will be acceptable for wearing at home until I finish the bottle; but it's not good enough for me to wear going out. Overall Score: 3/10 - Best to avoid if you can't stand strong sweet notes.

Digi_D_

If you knew how many panties the perfumer Murray Moscona has dropped from this one in the past half century, this one would be your top 10 modern/retro/sexy/winter/spring/summer/fall/panty dropper/compliment getters/drives women insanely horny/get a job promotion/score goals/lift more weight than you've ever lifted before/etc. etc. etc. this is the one lol. I think it's been reformulated though lol. It still smells good though.

Glennard

It's my go-to fragrance for going to hang out with the guys. Not trying to seduce anybody but I still don't want to stink. Fantastic value.

Bgraber1

Started wearing this in 1976 when I started dating girls in high school. I had little knowledge of fragrance and little money back then. Even so, this fragrance was my girl friends favorite and she refused me to wear any other scent when out on a date with her. I complied and now so many years later ai have acquired a modern bottle. It has some notes that were there in the 70's but I believe it has been reformulated because it is less strong and more soapy than it used to be. The Musk is not as dominant in the mixture as it once was. It still is a classic fragrance that I like to reminisce over on occasion but that's about it.

cologneboi

this smells like old hairspray but it's ok. i mean if i wear it i feel like people would think i stink so i tend to say away from it. overall it's not horrible just not my thing.

ROUSAK

The best musk cologne. Warm, clean, and lasts. 8/10

Shmellykat

Honestly, I just wear it for me. I'm 31 and feel too young for it. My ex hated it, I'm sure my next gf will too. Smells like older guy. Probably want to be 40+ to pull this off... but hey, you like what you like.

Novoscentologist

Jovan Musk...

...is such a 70s Classic and is still modern today. The bright orange color is the color of a sunset or a sunrise.
The soft musk is beautiful and it is such a nice summer fragrance.
It reminds me of suntan lotion without the usual coconut heavy fragrance profiles.
I enjoy spraying it on after a shower.

alatchka

I am a girl...a 62 year old girl. I LOVE this boy's fragrance! Is that wrong? Is it Politically incorrect? Will the fragrance police come barreling through my front door as soon as I post this? You never know these days when you publicly confess something, lol! Jovan Musk for Men is so comforting to me, my hubby, my son and most of all my wallet!!! There is a seller on eBay that starts their auctions at 1 cent. I guess most folks out there think JMFM is a old fashioned "grandpa scent" because 9 times out of ten I will win those auctions for anywhere from 1 cent to 1 dollar. Plus shipping, of course, but still ab bottle costs me no more than $5. This is the kind of fragrance you stockpile. I spray the dogs fresh out of their bathes, our linens, the curtains, my clothes and hair (that's where the longevity comes in). I spray hankies and use them as reusable dryer sheets. I spray cotton balls and slip them into my brasserrie, maxi or mini pads in our shoes..there is a million ways to use this fragrance. Once I had my hand in my purse and just about to take the bottle out to give myself a spritz and a guy jumped me trying to grab my purse. I sprayed him in the eyes and he stumbled away blindly. Jovan Musk for Men could have actually saved my life cuz I'm not the kind of girl to give up my belongings without a fight! JMFM is my new mace!!!

uhohstinky

I always remembered a bottle of this being in the bathroom growing up. I'm not sure if my mom wore it or what, but l do remember this scent vividly. It always smelled older and something that l probably wouldn't wear. Fast forward to today and l basically feel the same. I bought a bottle of this about a year ago and have wore it a couple times, but l just can't bring myself to like it. I have a huge bottle of this and would be willing to trade PM with anything you have.

Marcjohn86

This is really good stuff, and you can get a bottle for $10 or less I think still. Classic, signature scent, but it is definitely old fashioned which is why I don't currently have it. I also have a bottle of Kiehl's Musk, and that's a very similar fragrance but it's just better in every way so if anything that's the one I'd wear. Still, I recommend it. Good 7/10 fragrance and when you consider that it's $9-10 for a 90ml bottle, you can't really go wrong with it.

FrugalFragrant

They had a 15 mL in Dollar Tree so you know I had to buy it. Unfortunately, for someone who's 21 living in 2021, this smells somewhat dated and I don't think it suits me personally. A bit too soapy and musky for my liking. I'm not really a big fan of musk notes in general, so take that as you will (though I love ambroxan which may seem a bit contradictory, and layering this with ambroxan actually made me like it a bit more). Smells a bit like Coty Stetson, which I also wasn't the biggest fan of and ended up giving to my dad lol. This is less cloying and smoother than Stetson, so I do like it a bit more. All that said, it does, objectively, smell pretty good, and I could see myself possibly wearing this when I'm older. If, hypothetically, this was the only fragrance left on my shelf and I ran out of everything else, I would definitely wear it.

vrapjr123

I’d say it’s a good fragrance. Lasts long (for it’s price). Doesn’t project too heavily but it is a good scent for what it is. Definitely recommend if you like barber shop aromatic fragrances.

FreddyK

Got myself a 29ml. This is nice. Linear scent but a really nice one.

Turbo

Was expecting white musk (body shop), doesnt do it. Is awful. Wouldnt recommend.

Mystères du Château de Dé

I think anyone who likes a variety of fragrances will at least appreciate and perhaps enjoy this old favorite by Barry Shipp and Murray Moscona. Apply lightly as a base for essential oils, in keeping with its head shop inspiration.

RobbieX

Just got me some more. Jovan is a beautiful, soapy musk cologne. Smells fresh and clean. Spritz this on when you can't make your mind up what to wear - very versatile with an excellent silage and reasonable longevity considering the price.
A really lovely cheapie from Jovan.

pronose

The best musky scent in the world!: And the sexiest too! Broads love this scent on dudes! It's a true panty dropper! No worries.♥️🌶️🇺🇸

KajiraSuzanne

I am confused by all the negative reviews. This is one of those "it's still around for a very good reason" old-school frags.
It's "dirtier" than I remembered, with a spicy/sweet undertone. Personally I don't detect any mint, and the strong carnation note does NOT make me sneeze, which is unusual for me. Jovan Musk for Men is a classic quasi-barbershop cologne, more of a night fragrance, sexy and earthy. Sillage and longevity are both good.

a_c_thompson

I don't care what anyone says, this is a great fragrance. When I was a kid in the 80s, this was an old man fragrance. I still get old man vibes from it. But I'm 40 now, so maybe that's the reason, but I like it. I like it a lot.
I hadn't smelt this since maybe the real early 90s, but last year my wife and I bought these (men's and women's Jovan Musk) as kind of a joke. Like a fun little edition to our collection. And we were both pleasantly surprised. My wife is younger than I am (she's 30) and I guess the way I described how I remembered this made her expect something completely different.
This really is a great scent that gets no love because people seem to refuse to admit that any of these extremely affordable old fragrances are still good. Everything has to be new and cost crazy amounts.
Anyway, the longevity of this is surprising also. It really doesn't even begin to fade until the 6 hour mark.

Breezyyybeezyyy

Honestly this mixed with baby powder smells like my dad, basically in my opinion if you are born after 1975 I think you genuinely have no business wearing this. What I mean by that is, this isn't made for our generation (i'm born 94). All of you talking about A&F and signatures like that and saying it doesn't come close to those classics... those are classics for the 90s,00s kids why you would even consider putting jovan musk in that signature age frame is beyond me. Jovan musk is 70s/80s signature kind of scent. Those saying it smells like something someone's mom would buy for them you are correct, why? Most likely because your mom was from the 80s. This smells like your dad, your grandad even.80s & 90s & 2000s babies....this isn't the scent for you and vast majority of our generation wouldn't put this on them. With that said it smells like my dad to me... and for that alone i love this cheap old school scent, but just know its not for the "young" man generally speaking (unless of course you're young and you love this then by all means wear it!) but I just had to clarify and make a point to some of these bad reviews, you're comparing perfumes and colognes that have no business being compared together *eye roll*

Guinea54

I feel like the reviews here are soaked in emotional biases.. I guess that is to be expected with such a vintage fragrance. I am not really into vintage fragrances for the most part. I remember my mom buying me stuff like pierre cardin, or english leather and I really didn't care for any of them. This one has some of that old school vibe, but it's different wearing this now. It really just comes off like a second skin, an aura of clean musk, soapiness with a little masculine woody spice. You will basically have a soapy clean masculine aura wearing this.. I actually am enjoying it surprisingly. Thought I would hate it, but I don't. It doesn't scream OLD CHEAP cologne, it's too subtle for that. It works similar to how molecule 01 works for me. you get these light whiffs.. I think in today's age of sweet bubble gum and unisex scents this might work better than people expect.

maitton

Let's pause here and think of all the perfumes Murray Moscona could release if hired by Dior or Hermes. This type of perfumers are the ones that make your house market share to explode...times before you needed to create posters with celebrities licking leather belts to sell stuff.

Fragrance hunters will say this one is a bargain...but for cologne to become classic signature scent of whole generation and specific subgroups it has to be a magnet and obviously this one does have its own gravity field. Amazing classic!

Konstas Pete

Signature scent of leather wearing jacket hipsters from my childhood. And you know what? Unlike many other things, that notion never grew out of trend for me. Even though I don't dress myself like 80's or 90's hipsters all together, what good stuff they had. And you cannot trend a scent. You can surely aim badly at what you are putting together, and Jovan Musk oil can be a huge fail for you, like a broken guitar string in the middle of an awesome song... I mean, you gotta know what you are playing!
Point is, it smelled awesome back then, and it still smells awesome now, but it might not be your cup of tea... But I guess if it is indeed, what the hell do you care if someone frownes upon it? I don't...and that's the kinda person who wears Jovan. Know yourself instead of fooling yourself.

MAKSTR

The kind of scent a middle class mom would buy for her 14 yr old son, at least our neighbour boy a bit older than me always had it on him. In my teens I didn't like it that much and don't remember if I ever bought it but many years later.
I'm gonna buy one now for old times sake and will edit.
Under $10 and still going good, can't go wrong here.

Cserb

This is one of the go-tos in my collection.
Inoffensive, cheap, all-around fragrance.
Agree with the review by moawiya.alanazi - it smells like Baby Johnson shampoo, or generally like baby bath products. I cannot find any resemblance to the musks I know best (Bogart - Furyo and Malle - Musc Ravageur).

Carlitos

Jovan Musk is a fragrant institution from the 1970s. Either for old memories or out of sheer curiosity, you should at least try it. You can be surprised in a good way. Carnation, spices and musk, in a unmistakable "Jovanesque" blending.
Shop blind? why not? It won't hurt you with its price!

Bigsly

I didn't get any mint and to me it's really "synthetic" in a particular way, which is a smell from my childhood, when I entered a "five and dime" type store. Whatever other notes can be detected are bathed in this plastic-ish quality that I don't find pleasant. It's not horribly unpleasant but I would not have spent the $2 on the 3 ounce bottle I now have if I had known that it would be like this. Perhaps other, earlier formulations were better. I also have a recent bottle of their Sex Appeal for Men, and that one is a bit crude but it smells like a "real" fragrance, whereas this one comes across to me as more of a gag gift or something from Demeter (with a name like "Early 1970s Five and Dime Store"). It's not even what I think of as musky!

timotomate

I was reluctant to use this at first because I thought that it would be too outdated. I was certainly wrong. This is one of my go to fragrances now because the musk and mint blend so well on my skin. For an extra bonus, blend this with Grey Flannel.

moawiya.alanazi

To me it smells like baby johnson shampoo (the original with yellow/orange liquid) no musk at all and that's why i love it. Can't complain for $8 haha!

Poor performance so use excessively at will.

TeachOlfactoryArt

To me this shouts “barbershop fougere!” It’s very, very close to the smell of good foamy steamy shaving cream. For that reason alone, I like it a lot.

rr690

I wore this all through college because the Walmart off campus could never keep English Leather in stock and it was cheap. Its a sweet musky fragrance that barely made it to lunch time. When you're a poor college student you have to do what you can

Templeton

It seems that every scent I adore, my wife hates.
This is another one I totally love - the blend of floral and musk notes gives this a slight honeyish twist to my nose.
It's powdery right from the start, which I really enjoy.
Has good projection and longevity for a cheapie.
Would probably appeal mostly to older chaps of all genders.
Distinctive, soft, sweet and a classic that I frequently use to bring a touch of soft focus to my evening.

jman2k

Got this on the mail today, bought it to get over the threshold of an order to get the free shipping and needed a few bucks more. The bottle, sprayer and cap are of the cheapest kind, but I guess it's what keeps the price so low. On first whiff, after spraying into the cap (as I usually do when trying the colognes that I don't want straight on my skin), it smelled very but very familiar. Nice, fresh, a bit pungent, but very much like another cologne I have and use from time to time, but I couldn't name it immediately. So I scoured my collection for those ones that don't have a sweet smell (as this one doesn't) and after going thru some of them I found it: it was none other than the old and venerated Grey Flannel. I can't say why no one in the reviews below has ever pointed that out, but it smells like 85% GF with a less bitter smell. I need to find a use for it now, need to try it socially to get an idea of what impression it causes and to evaluate its performance. BTW, as it is, I love it, it smells clean and fresh, with a similar vibe to GF but less gasolinny (not sure that's a word). Stay tuned.

CoinLaundry

Jovan Musk smells wonderfully backward, beautifully "badkward" which I'll coin now, meaning "reminiscent of the worst aspects of the near-past". It smells very true to the lately-badkward, vivid and diabolically precise, like a perfectly-machined and ornate key to the worst time machine that exclusively reaches an America "made great again". This smells like "manscaping" would never be coined, homophobia as a given, a world where people will never know how to pronounce "harassment", and of a "place to be put in" that people are comfortable with.

ramses86

It's a cheap musk smelling cologne. On my skin it works lie EDP not like eau du cologne. Projection is good for 1-2 hours. If you like soapy musk, go for it!

MrVigilante

I have a love hate thing with this scent. Unfortunately, when I first bought this one I was going through a tough time. So now whenever I smell it, that's all I think about...

But for the fragrance..I don't get any musk from it at all. It's smells like soap. But with a dirty 70s vibe...

BillyBearPeppersteak

If you are of Gen X, your father likely had this in his medicine chest. Everything about this screams chest hair, amber tinted aviator glasses, Boz Skaggs, and chewing gum loudly with your mouth open. Possibly a toothpick instead of the gum.

I decided to start a cheapie collection of these drug store classics just for fun. Brut, this, Old Spice, Preferred Stock, etc. I sprayed twice on a piece of paper, remembered how much it smelled like ambiguous scent with some musk, and on the shelf it went. I will never put this on my skin. But hey, it was $7 and it looks like I dug this out of Arnold Palmers dumpster in 1979. Plus it opened so heavily on alcohol I know if the night ever gets too cold I can take a nip to warm my blood or help start a fire in the old fireplace. It's just so painfully synthetic. I don't get how this is still being made and is so loved. It has to be nostalgia and nothing else. I bought it for nostalgia and to just sit on my shelf. And maybe start a fire.

EarlofGrims

Ok,today i want to share with you on this most famous creation by Jovan profile, the sensations i had trying the newest creation,Platinum Musk.It is mostly sold as a clear twist of the classic musk for men,but it is really something in the middle of white and tropical musk, infact i will call it Bubblegum musk,as it is another highly sweet fragrance with poor performances.Nothing really great, but i wanted to cover anybody curiosity on the product,as i haven’t found no words for this scent.

InnerPup

Amazing blind-buy. For the price it's astonishingly good. They could probably sell the 3oz for $30 and it still would only be barely overpriced. (Obviously) has a little color to it so be careful spraying it on white clothing.

Nice soft musky scent with a bitter-spicy soap smell. Simple and masculine. Lasts 4-6 hours no problem.

If I had to get just one scent under $15 this would be my current #1 pick in the entire world.

yourthemanowdog

i really hate Jovan Musk have many old vintage bottles of it and just think its too flowery for my liking . grandpa loved it though

agp293

This is a casual low-key "for me" scent. Unisex. I LOVE it. I don't smell it so much as dated, but as familiar and cozy while being charming, fruity, and musky. My wife hates fragrance, but as soon as she smelled it on me after a shower she said what is that?!?! Is that from the shower?!?! Did you put something on?!? So these days I like to use this for myself at home after an evening shower just before bed, but I can also imagine using it at the gym or after the gym in another lifetime.

SmellTest

I blind bought this amid a binge on inexpensive classics (“cheapies,” if you will). And while I respect this as a clean and serviceable fragrance, this is one in which my olfactory memory was too strong and specific—it smells like my mom. Her body and hand lotion must have a heavy musk element, because that’s all I could smell. For that reason, I wasn’t comfortable in it and gave it away.

But, it is a pretty bottle and a perfectly fine musk representation. It smelled pure and not cheap, and not necessarily old-fashioned without my strong olfactory connection, though others certainly might share it. I respect it as a classic that clearly is influential, if my mom’s lotion is any indicator. Just wasn’t for me.

ALC555

One of my first çolognes when l was 12 years old. The other three were Aramis Classic, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and Jovan Grass Oil (hard to find and quite expensive since it is discontinued). I started to wear them again this year except for the Jovan Grass Oil. Guess l am back to where l started from since l had worn a lot of new fragrances. Classics and oldies are still quite good.

Harmius

I smell jasmine in the opening and top notes, but its not writen in the pyramid i dont know.
Overall its amazing perfume that can blast u back to the past. Its masculine, sexy and clean scent. Worth to try the hype of 80's and 90's perfume. I love it for sure.

dmoond

Smells dated. Clean scent but unsophisticated. You wouldn't wear this to the opera. Maybe to Applebee's.

UtaPau30

Billy Dee Williams did commercials for this in the 80s and it smells like I imagine he would.

This is my go-to vintage cologne. It's cheap, $10 for the 3.0 oz bottle online or ~$15 at the store, and it's usually at every store which is convenient.

It has a warm, musky, vanilla, powdery, soft but masculine type scent that works for me year-round, but probably a bit better in the fall-winter. It dries down into a clean, warm scent that's a little sweet and generally well-received.

It definitely doesn't smell modern but it's more "clean" and "warm," which I don't think smells old in the way something like Polo or Aramis which definitely scream "vintage." But it is clearly not something young people would wear. I suppose it's dated, going back to the 70s. I get positive comments on it, but now that I think of it, generally from the older ladies with this one, who usually get a kick out of me making the Billy Dee Williams reference. My wife does like it as one of my "soapy," less aggressive scents.

Silliage is good and longevity is more than I expected, above average. I'd say I can get 6+ hours out of this.

It can be sneakily overpowering so you don't need too many sprays - I do 2 to 4. Some reviews have said you need a certain skin chemistry (clean skin?) to make Jovan Musk work... I'd agree with that. It works well on me but I can see how it might not for everyone. Luckily, if it doesn't you haven't spent much.

sergiuniculescu

Massive performance and sillage for a cologne, stronger than many EDT from my collection. Also extremely cheap and accessible.
Smells like Old Spice Original aftershave but slightly more sharp and clean, also I get a vibe like a good shaving cream or the smell of clean laundry from the time when you used only detergent, without fabric softener and put your clothes to dry outside in fresh air.
Definitely worth checking out! 👍

Dipietro

Failed as an air freshener in my Toilet.

mikestro

Soapy, slightly powdery. clean, floral. a tad spicy. inoffensive, This modern version is not something Im excited to wear just know that you will smell soapy clean in a barbershopy kind of way. This was a blind buy for me for 8 bucks, I had no experience with or memory of this fragrance. this will probably be a Saturday beat about fragrance or might just collect dust. I'll see after a few more wears.

ritch

Still good in 2020?

2 sprays later, 1.5cm growth of handlebar mustache filled my upper lip and I instantly recall every word of “Staying Alive”.

Distinctively original retro vibe, like listening to old records or wearing vintage clothes. Here, there’s a backstory, a history, a mystique. You’re walking in the footsteps of men who built a generation.

An anywhere, anytime amber musk that adds 50% swagger to any mans wardrobe. Smells like antiques, old books and old school charm. Perfect for those simple days you quit chasing things and sit back with a glimmer in your eye, and allow things just come to you.

7.5/10. For me, Eau de Thrift Store. And I love Thrift Stores.

Any negatives? Slight hairspray vibe on the drydown... Maybe you won't get the association but I do. All in all a great little cheapie though.

Servantsaxscents

My great grandfather was a chess champion, and a simple enough man. I can honestly say he made me who I am today and he wore this fragrance. He wore it at church and from a mile around him people knew exactly which man smelled soft and strong and as handsome as he was. Every time I wear it I remember the footsteps I’m standing in. This fragrance is better than just sentimental Value however. The carnation And floral notes smells so sweet and powdery and reminds me of my great grand mother who grew the same flowers the spices and citrus come through but not in a piercing way. I need not mention the musk not much more manly than this fragrance . If you are a man, and want your smell to live up to you, this is it. You may hear it’s linear but I love this fragrance.

Frag: 10/10
Dislike: 0/10 the notes are for the most part in offensive and all blend so well
Long: 8.5-9/10
Silage: 10/10
Overall: 10/10
Who’s it for: An extremely classy, strong masculine, but soft hearted man

SpicyChaos

My review is for a modern day version.
This is very nice, warm and clean, but spicy. I sure would love to try the original version many users praise, but the new version is, at least, great quality for your bucks. On my skin longevity is easily 4-6 hrs, on clothes 24 hrs+. People might note it when you wear it, but it wont offend anybody.

websterdaniel

I ordered and got a bottle of vintage Jovan Musk spray cologne. It is beautiful. Wonderful scent. It was made in Chicago, IL. No other fragrance like it!

Upon the initial blast, I get the immense carnation, the lemon, the spices and all these hovered over by the Musk. Truly exceptional, decadent, stunning!

Seductive, not overly sweet, but just enough juiciness to let you know that it's got flavor. It's such an intoxicating aroma. So sad to see it destroyed by greedy corporate Coty whores!

But, i still love the old formula...

Cserb

Bought this based on a discussion about "old fragrances that do not go out of style". To me it's a very straight-forward musk smell, which you can find nowadays in a lot of cosmetic products. It's pleasant and smells "clean". On me it has very poor sillage and longevity.

raulinbonn

Blind bought this very inexpensively from Amazon.de (€8 for the 88ml bottle.) This to my nose does not seem masculine at all. In fact not even unisex or feminine, if you asked me it smells like baby talc or baby-supplies store to me. Drydown is way too powdery/baby talc-like (with an added layer of hairspray) for my taste.

I own The Body Shop White Musk for Men, which to me is pretty much unisex, a very different fragrance, more floral and creamy, not so powdery, very pleasant, and I like it a lot more to be honest. Don´t see myself wearing Jovan Musk.

Huuu seee

Very pleasant scent. It's fresh and moderately sweet, but don't smell it up close when you first spray it—your nose will burn. Despite the alcoholic opening, Jovan Musk doesn't smell cheap. Reminds me a little bit of cocacola, especially when I smell it from the atomizer.

HeyNow

I agree with BigBootsie that vintage Jovan is better, more animalic than its modern counterpart. @BigBootsie...ebay has a lot of choices. I've gotten authentic vintage Jovan from there. Just search "Vintage Jovan Musk Oil for Men".

BigBootsie

This review is for latest 21st Century version:
To begin with I am plenty old enough to remember the original orange concoction from the 70’s. I loved it them and I still love it now, even though today’s version is but a shadow of the original. And yet, the distinct DNA is still intact, even though it it doesn’t project or last even a fraction as long. Jovan Musk just smells really pleasant and clean and unlike any of the designer fragrances being sold for ten times the price. There are plenty of modern frags that use a musk base, but none of them are as straight forward as this stuff. Musk works on my skin really well and makes me feel comfy cozy.
Downside:
Performance. The stuff available today is very weak and does not last very long at all. I have heard of people who add a little of the Kiehl’s oil to a bottle of Jovan spray, and I think I’m going to try this next. Hopefully it’ll improve the weak performance.

What I really want to do is find a good source for some vintage Jovan Musk cologne. Any suggestions would be welcome and greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

Yourhumblenarrator

I'm a little young to be associating Jovan Musk with any of the 70's sleaze that so many wish they could forget. Also, my dad was more of a Brut guy, so I'm walking into this review without any prior association or bias. This cult cheapo may as well be new to me.

Considering words like "savage" and "dated" get thrown around so often with all things Jovan, I was very surprised with how soft, fresh, and inoffensive I found it. Unisex even. It's a lot like Khiel's Original Musk. They both have that slightly off-putting, clean diaper/fresh skin accord, but Jovan's is definitely more declawed. I also think that complaints of longevity with the current version are exaggerated and may stem from a bitter nostalgia about its early power house days. It's still very, very generous and I get an easy six to ten hours.

Jovan Musk is like stepping out of the shower on a sweltering summer day. You're refreshed and content, but the ghost of the day's stank still emanates from your damp skin. There's no juvenile sweetness, just warm citrus carnation, and it's pretty classy despite the trashy creepazoid-in-a-Camero association that haunts memories. I get it though, as scent memory is a powerful thing. If I had a gaudily dressed uncle who wore this I'm sure I wouldn't be able to get that out of my head either.

I'm always on the fence and overly sensitive when it comes to musk. Narcisso Rodriguez for Him was too dirty sidewalk like for me, Khiel's was too human, but this one hits the spot. It provides that perfect balance of soapy skin and laundry basket freshness. Airy and almost aldehydic. At nearly fifty years old, Jovan Musk is a bargain-priced classic, and unlike certain charming classics, I can wear this without feeling self conscious at all.

drugstore classics

Yes, manly, but also rather sweet! I find it wonderful on the right man. This one says 'dad' to me, and in no way smells cheap. The lavender/amber goes extremely well with the musk, so if 70's style musk is a favorite note for you, check out Jovan's affordable classic.

Smells like a hug. Recommended. :D

a.monroe

I had no idea what I ordered but gave this a shot. It initially goes from a citrus floral bang to a medieval pomander ball and ultimately a warm, comfortable and clean musky tone. Very interesting.

I'm in my 30s and have kind of a Jason Momoa style; messy hair and similar beard so I think that look works well for this smell in particular. Perhaps not something for skinny teens to use.

Ian762

I love to wear this, I dont care what anyone else thinks. It smells dated but that is why I love it. It is simple and very versatile, I wear it while running errands or walking around the town. It is very masculine no denying that. I don't think of bell bottoms and disco music with this cologne. I think hmm this smells different than what all the other dudes are wearing.

Ali_jafari

The definition of (classic): not Old fashioned but timeless..
They knew how to make an eternal and unforgettable product. advertising that emphasizes on sexuality and an Extremely reasonable price. There you go! Jovan musk is like a happy teenager who’s so neat and cares a lot about what girls think about him. It is happy and energizing, full of hope and dream. You do realize that musk in here is a soft animalic note playing games with your skin chemistry. As a result it can become really sexy on some skins.
I personally own 2 bottles :)) highly recommended.

OldSchoolScents

What a lovely old-school fragrance.

Was in my local Walmart and saw a Christmas package of a bottle of cologne and aftershave together for $15 and decided to pick it up. I am not regretting that decision one bit.

This smells so much like my what my Dad and my grandfather used to smell like from time to time. My dad used to wear the deodorant Musk by speed stick and this smells exactly like that.

Long lasting (12+ hours on my skin), old-school scent that smells a lot like clean laundry and is incredibly versatile. It can be worn by any gender, during any season for just about any occasion. This can be worn to work, casual nights out, hanging around the house or even with a suit and tie (although I likely wouldn't). Any instance where you want to smell like fresh linens you can reach for this.

What a treasure at it's price tag.

Voice-Of-God

My Mum bought this in 1978 for my 16th Birthday. My (steady) girlfriend at the time loved it. From recollection quite a lot of my girlfriends at the time always really liked the smell of it. Needless to say my taste in fragrance has developed quite a wee bit since then. ;)

My Mum passed away recently and as I was browsing Fragrantica I came across these reviews and it reminded me of one of my first fragrance gifts from her. TBH I was surprised to find out it was still available ;)

Out of nostalgia I bought a 118 ml Aftershave bottle for £8 on Amazon. It arrived yesterday and I was intrigued to see if the fragrance matched my memories of it.

It smelled just like I remembered it. It's a nice, warm, sweet, woody, musk.It reminded me of so many memories from that period of my life. Maybe it's just how my skin reacts to it in particular, but the bottle I bought is absolutely beast mode!

Just for the fun of it I thought it might be nice to try layering it 50-50 with some of my niche fragrances. I tried it with Percival, Aventus, Layton, Herod and Red Tobacco. Within 10 minutes of application the niche fragrances had disappeared completely!!! - all I could detect was Jovan Musk Oil! This stuff is like the Borg - it assimilates and overtakes everything it touches. It's really quite remarkable how powerful it is. ;)))

Oh... and for the first time in ages the better half asked me what fragrance I was wearing. "Why?" I asked...

"You smell absolutely gorgeous" came the reply.

£8.00... You gotta laugh at the irony of it! ;)))

stephen.redeker

Sometimes there's an experience that a fragrance takes you that brings a tear to your eye. That happened to me with Jovan Musk. I picked this one up for 1,000 Yen ($9) in Japan, because it's a classic that I've never smelled and it was among the cheapies in the store. The first time I sprayed it, I immediately remembered my late father. It was the exact scent I remember from decades ago. It was as if I was standing in his apartment. Visiting him on weekends; having Sunday dinner and watching football together (that was in my 20's). I never thought of my dad wearing cologne. He must've had a bottle of this stuff in his bathroom that I never noticed. It was amazing to me how a fragrance can revive those emotions; those warm feelings and memories. My father has since passed and all I have left are those memories, some pictures, and little things that pop up from family members (cards he sent, notes he wrote, etc.). And then there's this kind of magic from a bottle of Jovan Musk. He was a man's man, an old-school type of guy. There are plenty of colognes that would have suited him, but he chose Jovan Musk. It feels special to connect with my dad in this sort of way, and learn about his fragrance choices long after his passing.

Industro

For the price it´s a no-brainer really. The price tag is by no means representing its quality and performance. A nice discovery, as someone in the late 1970´s, early 80´s wore this and although the guy is dead by around 15 years, it triggered memories. The dude was questionable, but his perfume elevated the impression. It´s (to a degree) elegant, naughty, adventureous, bold. Does it work in 2019? Sure, but not for teens, as it does have an old school vibe. Good performance but can become offensive when oversprayed.
Very masculine!

Shnarty

Harsh opening that moves right into a nice, smooth musk. Too much pure musk, in fact, for a modern fragrance. Stuffy and overwhelming.
So here's the deal:
This is perfect for layering under a non-musky scent. Maybe an aquatic, a sport scent, whatever. Do you have a fragrance you like but that needs more oomph? Layer it over some Jovan Musk for Men. The musk will add a nice masculine base to any scent. It will really turn your one-dimensional freshie into a solid men's fragrance. Just keep in mind the freshie will fade out before this will so you'll have to reapply it.

Thorsen1981

Musk is ALWAYS up for some debate! But I kind of like this one - warm, cosy and pretty ol skoolish, but a great scent that without a doubt will have shared opinions :)

nicholaaas

Yeah, get it, guys. Especially if you've a taste for old school sexiness, and you want something to mix into your collection for when you feel like being a little bit bold. Best worn around girls who know you pretty well, like the girl you haven't kissed yet but you think you might do soon. I think this is a very impressionable scent, it's memorable and has stood the test of time. It's cheap enough to allow you to get the big bottle and experiment with it and find out how it works for you. I think it's a must-have in your rotation.

WorldSpinsMadly

$8 to smell like freshly laundered clothing during a work day at the office? Yes please! Really excellent scent that always smells good. Harsh opening but takes only 2-3 minutes go get that clean musk rearing it's head. Perfect scent to wear on those days that something heavy might not be needed.

tkay8309

Very pleasant fragrance. Unfortunately it doesnt last long, can hardly smell it after 3-4 hours, and sticks very close to the skin

pronose

this a rare gem from the past century ! it's sexy and warm and not a cheapie scent! you like musky then wear jovan musk the king of musks to me!

Survival

The men’s aftershave version of this is the bomb. What a gorgeous scent for men

Stephen N

Skimming through the reviews for this one, I get the distinct feeling that I'm being punked.

I was at a local pharmacy today and they had a tester bottle of this on the shelf, so I gave a few spritzes of it inside the cap to see if I liked it (which I undoubtedly did), then a few spritzes on myself to try.

While yes, it definitely has that clean powdery musk smell to it, I would not call this a manly smell. It has more of an odd flowery tone to it that reminds me of women's perfume, like some of the Demeter White Musk fragrances I've bought for my mother in the past (White Musk #15 I think). Maybe more of a unisex smell at the most.

I thought somebody at the pharmacy was playing a cruel trick on me and switched out the bottle for the women's version of this scent, but when my mother smelled it on me, she said "no, that's not women's perfume, I used to buy that for your dad."

I'm confused. So very, very confused.

TabledThoughts

It was sexy back
in High School.
Still is.
*wink*

chardoncharles

well, good ol manly man's scent

Recently wanted to get into older cheapies, why not? They stood the test of time, and most of them carry that vintage "i am a man" thing.

So among others I got javon musk, and i expected something way more aggressive according to what's written here.

First off, this is not niche, nor designer, this is a cheapie but honestly a good one, the musk is quite mellow and my girlfriend likes it, pretty good thing to layer in other scents and make them more interesting, not that beasty nor dirty or complex, a good first contact with musk i think.

Take note that i tried this in cold weather, things may change in summer, but right now, good little musky cheapie fun to mess around with.

Plus it's less than 20 bucks are you kidding me, try out the classics gents.

(now off to get some Kouros)

Thomaso7

when i first tried it it was the splash bottle. i got bit of a floral scent in there with the musk, and felt that i should be wearing a paisly shirt, but it did puff my chest out a bit. i really liked the somewhat retro but very masculine kinda macho scent, but it was very polite, soft with that touch of floral like lilac or something.
i got the spray, and it seems to have more of a hayfield scent with the musk instead of the floral which i really liked. maybe it is just because a spray is less dosage. i do smell the floral part in there sometimes.
anyways, this stuff was a lot softer and pleasant than i expected it to be - scentwise - the strength is pretty strong though. 1 or 2 sprays max really.
its pretty great stuff, but yeah totally casual scent. it smells real nice and pleasant, but doesnt smell expensive enough to wear with a suit or dressed up, so yeah its more casual.

awm0912

Who didn't wear this stuff in the late 70's? I got a lot of compliments wearing this back in the day.

Sabretoothkitten

You know, I've always thought I disliked this scent(too retro and skanky) but I was at the boardwalk recently and kept getting scent of this coming from a group of hippie/ hipster guys. I was actually trying to get more of it, in the salt air and carnival atmosphere I really enjoyed it.
I guess its my opinion this isn't a great choice for an office job or a first date but a casual outdoor setting or a faire, concert, car show etc, it really works. I got a new perspective. This was in 75-80 degree weather.etc
Thanks hippie/ hipster dudes.

tayyabforyouth

Overall I get straight up strong spicy musk from this cologne/aftershave with hints of lavender, mint, and citruses (but mostly musk); provides a nice burn too after shaving; very manly smelling, I really like it. It's both clean smelling and spicy at the same time. Also, it's extremely masculine; one of the most masculine fragrances I've ever tried. Cheap and good.

On its own Jovan Musk reminds me of a '70s Camaro with concert t-shirts for seat covers, a huge plastic comb and a pocket full of dry, crumbly B-grade Columbian. With a couple Quaaludes and some dried out Trojans behind the equalizer in the glove box. Just can't do it solo.

However, it layers like a champ. One little swipe on my upper chest then put on my main frag. It never fails to add a bit of depth to whatever else I'm wearing.

I've been told to seek out a vintage version, and I like modern Jovan Musk enough as a condiment that I just may do that. With the amount I use my current bottle is probably going to my nephew when he turns 16. Which is in about 16 years.

KJS88

I, too, took the plunge on this, and found it perfectly pleasant. While I don’t get associations with fragrances others have mentioned, I do think it’s underrated. This is way better than other cheapies. I’d have preferred more of the musk and less of the spearmint, though. It’s not toothpasty or anything like that, but if there’s such a thing as a “bathroom-y” musk, this is it.

rudwat

I finally purchased this on sale. Even though it's a budget fragrance, I wasn't prepared to pay full retail price knowing that this has received polarised reviews. I like a bargain and I don't like to be disappointed, what can I say....

So what's it like?

A lot softer than I expected, it is easily a unisex scent at first.
Very mildly spiced- how I imagine a curry made by a full-blooded Briton for full-blooded Britons might be spiced.

That said, I didn't expect florals to take centre stage.

There is definitely more musk as time goes by, give it about 45 minutes.

It's a less manly version of Avon's Black Suede. Less spice in the shape of cinnamon and less overall musk.

Update: This stuff has really grown on me, the citrus has become easier for me to detect, it's not as linear as I initially thought it was- especially after you've worn it for over 2 hours.

It's way less of a brute the Avon Black Suede. It's an emotionally mature influencer. None of the oiliness in ABS is present. It's just musky off the top... and then the musk gently fades away.

My God.

Love Jovan its wonderful

For the money it asks, J Musk is one little wonder. A good smelling fruity musk with an exciting carnation note. Honestly it caught me by surprise how nice it smells. Nothing amazing, just a good smelling fragrance. But not more than one spray. Two or more make my head ache.
Totally unpretentious, unexpectedly gracious.

I used to smell this as a kid as my dad wears this, it was potent and very strong. Now I tried it it has been very toned down.

It's a decent man's fragrance despite the low cost. It's not your typical warm spicy scent, it's more of a floral musk with spiciness, and hint of leather and woods. Kind of a soapy scent to me, but that could be because when growing up 40 years ago my dad kept his Jovan Musk "soap on a rope" hanging in the shower as a Christmas gift each year from mom. Back in the day, women loved this fragrance and many still do. It's still my mom's favorite cologne on my father after all these years. She was never into designer fragrances... store cheapies was good enough, Sure, it's cheap and synthetic, but it sparks a lot of family memories just like Old Spice, Brut, English Leather, Canoe, Copenhagen and of course Pinaud Original which was used by every barbershop back then. If you were a kid growing up in the 70's and early 80's, then you know these classic fragrances very well... and chances are the scent of them carry a lot of good memories for you. I'll keep Jovan Musk in my collection for the rest of my life. :)

cocolover56

Jovan Musk doesn't smell much better than you'd expect it to for the price. This isn't a bad thing. For such an affordable scent, it has some complexity and lasts a pretty long time. It's not aged well, it seems, but it does define a certain animalism in you. Carnation, as it is in many drug store scents, pushes through this with great might and what you're left with is a highly oily liquid on your skin with smells of sandalwood and musk.

I prefer Sex Appeal, but this is pretty good for the price. There's no denying that.

FloatingOphelia

Im not a big fan of musk so its no surprise I don't like this. Into have nice associations that one of my friends grandpas used to wear this and he was a nice guy. But something just hits me in the faces with these types of musks. I imagine it smells like a wild African cat or civet cat in heat. That's not a bad thing if musk turns you on. The only musky male scent I like is Obsession. I can see where people say they smell weasel/ ferret. I don't like carnation much either.
I often wonder if I'd like Kiehls musk but my boyfriend doesn't much like musk scents either so I doubt I'll ever find out

worth1969

For all of the folks reviewing this wonderful scent, please keep in mind that it was reformulated when Coty bought the rights back in 1994 and has gone downhill ever since. I worked for Coty for 4 years and am very familiar with their practices of acquiring a brand and then making their version with cheaper ingredients. I recently won a vintage bottle of this that still says "Jovan Musk Oil" from Jovan Inc. Chicago, and it smells divine. I get so many compliments from ladies when I wear this - performs wonderfully! It's never too sweet on me, just fresh, manly and alluring - one of the best drugstore scents ever! The Coty bottle that someone gave me is mostly used as an air freshener - the quality is nowhere near as good as the vintage Jovan Inc. version. However, if you're happy with the current formulation - more power to you. I just hope you get a chance to try the vintage formula someday because it's pure 70's magic in a bottle!

SecurityDude

this is a 70's skin flik in a bottle

I wore my fair share of Jovan Musk in HS and it still smells pretty good to me. For the price these days anyone who likes a good musk should have a bottle. Longevity on me is great 8+hrs with two sprays on sides of my neck and two on my shirt.

ptilda

Another gift for hubs from our Fragrantica family! He hasn't worn it much, but I see the level has gone down. I think he's layering this under others, and that's a great way to use this one!

Of all his cheapies, I think this is my favorite! It's such a warm, sensual, spicy, warm musk. I'd actually wear this myself, and I might do that from time to time. But hopefully as the weather gets cool, he'll start to appreciate this one more. For me, it's a love, but I can live without it (wish there were more categories on Fragrantica).

I wore it myself for the review. And it appears to be a current formulation.

YASHMELLME

this doesnt smell anything like it used to in the 90's wtf

fraggy_man

Musk ...musk....musk...

1980's type powerhouse perfume.
Its a love or hate frag.
On the skin it react different on different men. Those whose sweat stinks ; please don't wear on skin because it smells horrible once mixed with sweat.

Its a cheapy so what else to expect . This was one of my school day frags . I just bought it to kindle old memories and it surely did!

This is perfect for cold weather where your body does nt sweat a lot.

Shugenja

I have the after shave / cologne splash bottle, 8oz.
When I first opened it and applied, it was skanky.
I left the bottle opened for a week to let it calm down, and the air reaction really calmed jovan musk down to the soft and pleasing smell I remember from the men in the family.
So let it breathe a bit before you make your judgement about this juice.

Edit -
I enjoy Jovan Musk when used sparingly. I tend to apply cologne so I can smell myself a bit.
I was not enjoying it, and I realized I was using too much. When applied heavily, it is unpleasant. It is much better when applied conservatively.

Stnik

That's £6.28 (free p&p) I'll never see again.

Love it or hate it... Like every musk...One of the best musks ( and cheap). For me it's sad fragrance. Years ago when I was young boy I did work in care home in New York. There was lonely depressed old man(around 80),smelling with jovan musk and cigars...He never did never talk to anybody, just sit on boardwalk and he was stearing somewhere deep in ocean and horizont line. The same way smelled his dusty room full of black and white photographys...He is now dead long time ago, like people from his pictures.

Soofiya

It was a blindbuy and I gifted it to my man anxiously.I love musk in all it's variations but I didn't know what would hubby think of it and he has a very sensitive nose.I didn't know would he accepte place this cheapie (3oz bottle=11$) beside his creeds and xerjoff and mugler?
I gave it to him right after his shower.he took it off it's box.qsmiled and said:"it looks like a perfume my grandma used to have" then he pressed the atomizer infront of his neck.my heart was beating fast.I wished he had sprayed it on his wrist so that if he hated it he could wash it easily and there would be no need for another shower
As soon as it's scent reached my nose I forgot to think about his impression because I could only think of the cool scent I was smelling.I loved it!
I hate too much animalic scents and this one isn't a dirty scent in my book.in the contrary,it's clean but it's not a detergent like scent either.it's a combination of clean musk and animalic musk with a touch of lavender and sharpened by a dash of spices.it's not a cold scent, not a warm one either, actually it's both of them and I find this powder puff of musk and spice and woods very appealing. I can't detect citruses or green notes.it's sharpness tickles my nose but at the same time I find it very comforting.jovan musk for man is pure sex in a bottle!I can see it's not everyone's cup of tea but for me if it was ten times more expensive, still I would buy it
I've read in numerous comments that it's old or dated.yes it smells like what classic men used to smell, real men but it's still how my man should smell.I'd say it's timeless and definitely ageless.I simply love it!
Hubby was looking at me.he said:your smile and your glowing eyes are telling me that you like.I asked:"but you don't like it?" "I like whatever you like"and he continued :"how can I dislike it?it reminds me the perfume you wear to bed" he was talking about body fantasies white musk and I agree.that one is a cleaner and feminine version of jovan musk for men.oh yes, they're both simple and love is simple too and they're both cheap but lovers don't need expensive fragrances.they just need each other and drops of musk
My man asked me:won't people consider this as something cheap smelling and trashy babe? I answered :well, maybe, but it's difficult not to kiss a neck smelling like this.choice is yours. and my love has made his choice.it's sitting between his Creed aventus and xerjoff mefisto right now

Review of Aftershave/Cologne:

Several years back I reviewed the cologne version of this frag, and found it good but difficult. Musk for Men has a habit of being a few different things all bundled into one scent, sort of a Jekyll and Hyde trick. Sometimes it's a smooth, fresh, cooling musk, almost like a laundry detergent scent but done a few degrees better than anything from Tide. Other times it's a skanky 70s machine, full of sweat and rust and mustaches and unnecessary horsepower.

I find the aftershave/cologne version (splash bottle) to be a somewhat more stable concentration. The balance of white musks and raunchy florals is somehow better, and the citrus/amber accord is more relaxed and expansive. It's a good aftershave, very bracing and smooth, and doesn't burn. The far drydown is grassy, gently musky in a skin-scent style, and altogether appealing. Having this bottle side by side with the same concentration of Sex Appeal is the icing on the cake.

Update 9/28/19:

I now believe the aftershave/cologne version I'm smelling is just a general reformulation of this fragrance with the odd raunch of the previous formula stripped out and replaced by a more conventional synthetic musk. By conventional, think "sweet." This isn't really a sweet fragrance, though, just a nice, clean, abiding skin musk. Also the florals (mostly jasmine) are toned way, way back now. Still good stuff, still worth the $20 I paid for it.

I would like to define this cologne in a short story..

Once I wore it and went to shopping. While i was waiting for my turn in line on cash counter. A man standing beside me asked what am i wearing. With a smile on my face , i told him the name 'JOVAN MUSK FOR MEN' he replied "Throw it away and do not wear it again". The cashier added further more "AS SOON AS YOU CAN"

The End.

_christine_

On the right man, this is so sexy-good. Admittedly, it's not the most refined scent, but damn it can smell good.

This is unapologetically, old-skool, manly-man. And sometimes, that's awesome.

Dr. Social

It takes serious balls to wear this stuff in public because it kind of like slaps people in the face saying: "I am a man". It is a savage musk that provokes. I generally enjoy it within the confines of my apartment and think it is a nice item to have.

Br'eauDeCologne

Classic. Versatile. Flexible. Refreshing. This is my first bottle in decades and it is less "skanky" than I recall ... but it still has the character that has made it a legend. Instantly familiar and fresh at the same time, it strikes a nice balance between mild musk and dirty musk. Worth more than its low price tag.

Why do they have the aftershave bottle pictured?

Sweaty, stinky, funky, musk.
It just reeks like a skunks butt.
Why do i love this?

Never would i walk into public wearing this.
I wear this to myself, by myself.
And it feels good.. a guilty pleasure.

A classic fresh fragrance which, I'm afraid is too classic for me.

Once you put this on you want to open your shirt to reveal your hairy chest and put on your large bling medallion.

I'm not a young man anymore but I'm certainly not as old as this fragrance makes me feel.

Ah, my very first cologne ever, and it hasn't changed in all these years. This was long before the Axe craze and before I even wore Obsession. Nice clean, very masculine smell. Strangely, when I first met my wife, she loved the smell, then when she found out what it was, she hated it because it is cheap. Its been my experience that some women snub fragrances for no other reason than the price.

Sure it's inexpensive, but it smells great. Longevity is below average and so is the sillage.

scent 8/10
longevity 4/10
projection 6/10 then drops to 2/10 as it dries
sillage 4/10

For me, in a few hours, it dries to skin scent and is barely detectable.

Soft and clean musk. Gives you that shaving foam feel good smell(Gillette Sensitive foam-Green can to be precise ). Masculine and sensual .Good to be in any man's collection.

We all hear the word "musk" thrown around all the time in the fragrance world, but if you were born after the musk craze, like I was, then there is a strong likelihood that you aren't quite certain what musk smells like. That's where Jovan Musk for Men comes in handy - it is a great, affordable beginner musk. Is it likely to become your signature fragrance or rank among your favorites? Probably not. But there is a strong chance that you will probably find this fragrance charming and comforting. It instantly reminded me of things my mother and father would wear when I was young before fruity florals and aquatics took over the fragrance world. This musk is clean, peppery, floral and well-balanced. For it's price, it is a great bargain and a safe blind purchase.

The Perfect White Musk...

This fragrance is the cleanest musk fragrance I have ever smelled. Simply put, it can be worn at any place, any time, anywhere.

It reminds me of clean, floral musks which are often my favourite category of fragrance. Simply superb. For the price this is one which is hard to beat in terms of smell and experience. I think as long as you do not expect something of amazing niche quality here, you can be on to a guaranteed winner.

I find this can be worn dressed up, dressed down, and in pretty much any situation. I also detect lavender, some carnation and maybe something along the line of white pepper, with a clean, fresh, citrus musky vibe.

This is a great one which I would personally reach for in any occasion. For the price, I would recommend it for men of any age. A great one which I like very much.

NZFH

In my view, this fragrance cannot be written off as an inferior product or a complete waste of time. It's a very pleasant, fairly light musk for men. It's a comforting skin scent really, I suspect it doesn't project much. The perfect "after shower/before going to bed" fragrance. I own this and Kiehl's Original Musk, which is darker, heavier, and more floral. This is easier to wear than Kiehl's, which for me, required an adjustment period. Applying BOTH musks at the same time, seems to work nicely.

LuxAestiva

I've learned to not judge a fragrance by where I find it and it's price, but to focus on how it makes me feel. Musk for Men feels like a comforting, nostalgic hug for me when I wear it. I like to put it on after a long shower at the end of the night before bed. I'm only in my twenties, but this still feels really nostalgic for me. Musk dominates by a long shot, but the carnation, pepper and citrus brighten this up and keep it from being too stinky and heavy. It took me a few tries to begin to enjoy this, but for some reason I kept coming back to it until I began to love it.

This is great for pumping up the musk in other fragrances. I like layering it with Aramis.

stelluartois

I didn't read all the reviews, but anyone would agree that it smells identical to some Gillette shaving foam when first applied? Fortunately, its smell evolves into a very likeable musky odour that lasts quite a long time.
Overall, it caught my attention for its great value (i would pay double for this without even thinking about) and for its versatile character, being very easy to wear.

Thomaso7

it's nice, a somewhat fatty musk, and a type of dry floral smell. it's pleasant. kinda warm scent.
Musk always makes me feel comfortable and satisfied, and this one does that trick. It also makes my chest puff out a bit more. lol. This is man stuff, but not rough, it's quite pleasant and a little bit fashionable since it has some nuances and varying ingredients to be picked out rather clearly including a floral which I thought was like lilacs, a warm hayfield type of smell, and also some mint too, and of course the warm pleasing musk.
It does have a bit of a retro vibe though, from the floral and the musk of course, but it just smells good.
This is definitely much better than Jovan's wretched Sex Appeal. that stuff is rough.
Also this one is better than Coty's musk. This has those nuances and varying ingredients in it, whereas the Coty is much more just a singular smell.

GrandmaGaga

My husband has worn Jovan Musk for men daily and exclusively since the year we married in 1978...that has to be some kind of record! I'm sure it's been reformulated over the years, as most scents have been but, having smelled it continuously for close to 40 years, I don't notice much difference other than a bit less strength and longevity. I have discovered a magic potion as of late, however; I add in a bit of Kiehl's Original Musk *OIL* to a decanted spray bottle of his Jovan Musk and it makes a heavenly concoction...not much different in smell but it lasts forever on skin due to the addition of the oil. An 8-ounce bottle (!?) of this liquid gold can be found for less $15. This was *the* scent of the 70's; if anyone is looking to catch a 60-something 'cougar', this is the cologne to wear!

steve0580

This is a fragrance where there's quite a difference between the current incarnation of a fragrance and the vintage version of it.

I remember being fond of Jovan Musk for Men when I was in my teens. In the late 70s, my cousin had a bottle of the Jovan Musk Oil for Men in the frosted glass bottle and to me, it was phenomenal.

About three years ago, when I first starting exploring fragrances, fragrance sites and expanding my collection, I bought a bottle of Jovan Musk for Men from the store shelf (wherever it was.. CVS or whatever) and when I smelled it, it was awful. It was a watered down, odd, sharp, dusty musk concoction of something or the other. It was nothing like I'd remembered, so I ended up giving it away.

Well, after years of exploring new and niche fragrances, I decided that I wanted to get into vintages, so I bought a vintage Brut and a vintage Coty Musk but the rare Jovan Musk Oil for Men in the frosted glass bottle was a bit more than I wanted to spend. Finally, I encountered a situation where I was able to get one for a good price.

Result? Absolutely Wonderful! It's exactly as I remembered it: Clean, smooth and sensual with a slightly powdery musk combination.

We all know how scent affects our memories and emotions, so along with the enjoyment of the fragrance, it brings back some great memories that I get to enjoy as well.

As far as a comparison from the vintage frosted glass Musk Oil to the current EDT - it's night and day. Pleasant to horrid.

pundi64

After posting my review (below), I just bought two more bottle of this great product, least to say my girlfriend was smiling with a huge open smile.

pundi64

Yes to all the positive reviews on this Musk by Jovan, I get compliments of it's very sexy appeal from the women. My Thai girlfriend loves it, she'll also use it sparingly on herself, then or bodies intertwine, into a interlude of the night, lasting till the wee hours of the morning.

I am really a fan for this product.

Dan

marlon.martinez

After the initial musky blast, it dries down to a surprisingly comfortable citrus note that I didn't see coming. A pleasant surprise. Lasted a couple of hours. Cheap enough for a re-spray. I'd say a little orange or lemon zest is the secret ingredient here. Not a front-line bottle, but, one I won't be afraid to use again in the future.

ParfumAmour

I wear the female version, and the male version, because this is just such a good scent I cannot get enough of it.
It is my favourite gift to get for men, because it is very sexy, warm, and inexpensive!

MrBumblepants

Good lord.....The first scent I ever owned. I used to wear this scent all thru my teen years and my 20's. Used to serve me well as I got lots of compliments from ladies about the way it smelled on me. I haven't sampled again in years and years. I may have to get another bottle just to walk down memory lane.

I always found it be a great scent, altho not sure if they've reformulated it in any way. I don't think I could wear it now, but it was good for me at the time. It's a good starter fragrance for guys I think.

rossarlen

The second scent I ever owned; I got it in a white elephant gift exchange! Over the course of middle school and high school, I used up the whole huge bottle--even though it smelled ridiculously old on me.
I revisited recently, and I'm glad I did for the sheer memory of it all, but Lord, I didn't like it. From someone who LIKES musky florals, this smelled synthetic and guido-ish on me. I felt like a slick-haired man with a last name like Moscatello, living in Jersey, chest hair poking out of his shirt, wearing clothes from the eighties, a huge mustache, and dancing at a nightclub with women who are too young for him. On my skin, this stuff doesn't work, but I applaud anyone who can wear this with some subtelty. Projection is huge, and lord the staying power--I got 13, 14 hours from this--with a shower. I hope it smelled differently on me when I was in high school!

Nitrib

Clean, soapy at the top. Later it gets warmer, classy a bit animalic woody musk. Good. And really good longevity for EDC.

coltranedreams

my very first scent; was all i could afford, and i loved it. i'd buy one now if i find one. like charlie, it transports me back… ah beautiful, bittersweet memories!

Escoteric

The adverts sold this too me more than anything. like Hai Karate, where Valerie Leon, in MHO the sexiest best looking women ever. Its a Soapy amber smell but leaves your skin feeling well conditioned.

lizzie12

I'm a mature female and I wear the men's version occasionally. It's the same bottle I gave my partner about 3 years ago. Sadly he died suddenly and unexpectedly 18 months ago. Initially I dabbed it on for comfort. But I do now wear it very lightly in public sometimes and no-one has commented adversely. Just a light dab on each wrist with a cotton ball. He didn't wear it all the time, but when I can smell it on me, I feel he is with me. I do use the women's cologne, but I find it too weak. The men's cologne is warm, cosy and comforting, and I will treasure this bottle forever. This will always remind me of Pete.

basement guru

Good ol" Jovan musk for men! You can buy it just about anywhere, it's dirt cheap, and it is still a great smelling, musky, masculine scent.
This is my go-to scent for working around the house, mowing the grass and running to the store.
longevity and sillage are about average, but it's cheap enough to re-apply all day long.
Less than $10 bucks a bottle, and it still gets me compliments!!!
If you like good, musk fragrances, this is a safe blind buy!

not a bad smell but not really a smell. just light and soapy.

This is a great, low cost fragrance. I wear this whenever I do any work outdoors in the Autumn, it just feels like the perfect fragrance for chopping up wood. As a side note, it leaves my skin feeling great after a shave.

The third manliest fragrance I own (after Polo and Quorum) there's nothing feminine about this smell.

I love it.

JhaNikhil

Some reviews pointed out synthetic musk in current formulations. This is because natural sourcing of some the essential oils has been banned globally. Animal musk, Oakmoss, Tea Tree oil, etc. Some bcoz of endangered source & others for some side effects.

Synthetic Musk is really close to original musk. In world of synthetics, it is one of those really close to its original oil. Musk is also happens to be one of those rare fragrances which is totally imperceptible to some people. Some people cant smell musk at all - Natural or synthetic.

Have never smelt Vintage Jovan hence can't compare.
Fragrance wise, this is the best Musk fragrance around. Hands down. For cologne it gives longetivity which would beat many celebrated EDTs to pulp. And at Half the price.

Toogle

It was a blind buy for me. First spray woody storm and spice bomb i really hate it, but Jovan suprised me when dry down "powdery musk and musk and musk" sweet worm sexy.

Just a brief update on this timeless drugstore classic, as I revised my review some. One always feel a certain 'comfort' when wearing this - like a warm robe of masculinity. Offers an exceptional blend of fresh notes (floral, citrus, spices) on top of a blend of a brisk laundry-fresh white musk and a slightly dirty/skanky animalic musk, along with warm amber and a light touch of woods.

My key addition is two flankers:

The Vintage Evening Edition bottling of this scent has a sharp opening of more spice and smooth lavender, but is fuller and has more amber from the heart into the base of musk. It reduces the top, fresh notes with more warmth and seduction. Definitely not bad to layer a couple of dabs or light sprays into a wearing. Very nice, rather rare & expensive...but a different overall feel. The scent is more oriental and ambery than a skanky musk (although the musk note is clearly there, the amber is more prevalent). Nice.

Vintage Musk Oil for Men - really, this bottling deserves its own listing. It is the best of what Jovan ever offered in the line - today, really for people who love this scent. This is very rich, an oily feel that is thicker and NOT truly an 'Aftershave/Cologne'. It is meant to be applied with pure bravado and raw animalistic, carnal indulgence. Not for anyone who doesn't want to stand out. Sure, a couple of dabs will blend into a wearing of the standard Jovan Musk for Men Cologne and be a nice little 'kick', but it stands out entirely. The notes are essentially the same as the original Aftershave/Cologne, but with richness that is FAR more impressive. This is liquid, wearable pheromones in a bottle - on the right man. Intimacy is perfect. Steamy. Seductive. Very alluring. Like a good musk oil, it soaks into your skin, leaving a rich oily glow on top and radiates with body temperature. It would be perfect year-round. Hot weather, just go light. Evenings in a warm, humid setting would be incredible. To smell this on a man is a statement of sexuality and sensuality. This takes one back to what rock stars in the 70's truly wore. Bold, brazen, very virile. Sexy and uber-macho scent. Excellent!

A nice cologne .one of the best drug-store stuff.
Atleast better than Lynx/Axe!!

I tried this, and I thought it was much better than "sex appeal" which I had years ago, but is so rough and pungent. This one was actually quite nice, It was much softer and pleasant smelling - much better and more going on. It was fresh at first and I could tell there must be some mint in it. I also got a floral scent like a soft lilac or similar. It definately smells manculine and gave me that in control feeling, maybe that's the muskyness which usually prompts a feeling of satisfaction for me.
It is a warm, lightly floral, fairly rich and clean smell for me. It's actually pretty nice, but I only tried it once. I want to try it some more for sure.

Musk, wood, spices. These are the 3 most evident notes in this amazing fragrance, my signature one for some time now. Jovan Musk is a classic for men and it is not by chance. Its characteristic musk note blends with one's own body scent to provide a powerful masculine aroma. I have never taken as many compliments (especially by the opposite sex) for a perfume as for this one.

Great all year around, but in my opinion it is best for winter close quarters!

AquaCitrus

Used this so many years ago when I was high school (with the other usual suspects- Faberge Brut and Drakkar Noir!!). I remember liking this at the time but can imagine its super dated and super synthetic right now.

LuLuGoes

Carnation, citrus, amber dreams. I find this to be seductive and lovely for any gender. I am wearing it and detecting the "cola" sweetness another reviewer has mentioned.

I know this is marketed to men to attract women, but I find it is suitable for a daring woman to wear herself. This one is sweet and smoldering, musky, and spicy. I am happy I bought it.

UPDATE: I have to say that this is more masculine than I initially thought. There is something "aftershave" about it.

Like below review, I got as headache after wearing this today. Something awful on the opening like fly spray. Obviously heavy on the musk with a hint of honey for me. That's it. None of the other notes came through. Also reminded me of my grandma for some reason.

TheDogsMum

I was in a large budget shop the other day and spotted this on a table for $12 bucks. Was with a male friend who wasn't even alive in the 1970s, like I was, so I said 'Hey Im gonna buy this for you!'. I sniffed the tester and noticed a distinct buildup of the (synthetic) civet smell, lingering around the kind of gummy goo at the top of the tester nozzle. ( which to me is a cowshed smell.) 'Wow it's a *civet* - read skanky - musk I gotta get this, a true animalic' I said out loud to nobody in particular. My friend was unimpressed had no idea what i was talking about, of course. (I had recently convinced him to buy Tabac Original and it smells *fantastic* on him :))
So I grabbed it and paid. Sprayed some on myself in the car outside and thought OMG I have to ekkp this for myself. I have been wearing it almost daily ever since. It isnt very strong, but I whack it on liberally, and internd to go back and buy more soon.
No particular notes to me other than the musk, and the KNOWLEDGE that the civet is there too. I dont notice the civet in my bottle as I did on the tester but the bottles were identical, so... It is unisex, as in bears little resemblance to the Lynx/AXe stuff everyone else smells of these days. ... and retro to be sure, but it is sexy! I like it on me, he likes in on me, and I would like it on him too, but he's happy blowing through his new bottle of Tabac O.
(I wear my own of that as well) A bargain basement winner for both sexes IMO :)

I don't quite remember how this smells only that this is one of my father's personal favorites. I want to buy a bottle of this to give as a gift or I could use it myself!

jodicoyoti88

Just as some of the other reviewers can attest to this in their own experience, this fragrance and I go waaaay back. I bought a bottle for my high school sweetheart in 1980 and it drove me wild (all raging hormones aside;0). I even remember buying a tiny sample bottle for myself and putting it on my pillow before I went to sleep. I don't think I would have worn it myself back then, because at that time it was SOOO obvious to everyone that it was Jovan Musk for Men. Everybody knew that scent. That, and Polo:0)

At some point later on in life, I began wearing it because I love the musky scent without all the floral top notes you get with a musk fragrance for women. It actually smelled slightly different on me than I remember it smelling on my boyfriend (which disappointed me slightly), but I got lots of compliments from fellow musk lovers who couldn't quite put their finger on the maker. They usually just said that it smelled "really clean."

Now, I am forever trying to find a slightly more "grown up" (at least in my mind because I don't ALWAYS want to be reminded of when I was 16 years old), "really clean" musk that is just a little more unusual and colorful if you will, and yet still exciting. I've been wearing Keihl's Original Musk lately. After the top notes wear off, it's similar in that primal undertone that is satisfying to me, with just enough color to make it new and exciting to me. I just keep sniffing my wrist over and over again. I want a new signature scent, whether Keihl's is it or not is too early to tell...

zkxnyi278

This smells like vanilla coca cola to me, if you open a bottle and smell it up close, and sunscreen, the coca cola part is really strong to me though. They also make a stick deodorant for this and it smells like soda also but pepsi instead of coca cola and no sunscreen or vanilla-ey feeling smell alongside it. i like it

drugstore classics

I have to say that these notes surprise me, as I've smelled Jovan musk often and never noticed any mint! Also, I could swear there's a generous sweet accord, possibly from the warm, golden amber present. :)

Whatever the combination, Jovan Musk is one of the most appealing scents for men ever to be sold at the drugstore, signifying masculinity and tradition. Though I suspect that when it was released it just said 'Handsome dude'. ;) When something has lasted this long, you know there has to be a certain appeal. As a woman, I can definately attest to that!

Four Stars - Five if it wasn't quite so sweet....

LOL this frag is old man in a bottle. My friend bought this while higher than a hippie at Woodstock. We then proceeded to spray this on random people at the shopping centre. Its so bad and shit, but you def need this in your collection just because it is so much fun. You can spray your friends before they go out and wreck their chances with any girl, because lets be honest Jovan will not get you laid

sirop de Liège

Oooooh no! I just ordered a bottle based on the positive reviews!
And it was only 6,20 euros....

chris.kragel

I can remember at one of my first jobs, a friend and I used to go spray the testers on ourselves, since we both adored the sweet smell that was Jovan. It was lively, energetic, and pleasant to the senses.
That was years ago.
I know I will most likely get some flack for this review, but- ladies and gentleman, this scent is both a) quite unrecognizable from what it used to be, and b) quite unpleasant. I personally own an extensive collection of colognes and perfumes, and I must admit that this is nowhere near joining my collection.
I sprayed Jovan Musk tonight, only to be greeted by a terribly staunch, dry, bitter smell that I could only describe as a combination of baby wipes and some cleaning materials that I would keep under the sink. I wondered if it was perhaps just the top notes, so I let it cook on my skin for a while just to note any change.
Nope. Fairly linear throughout. Same strong, bitter smell. I washed it off after a couple of hours. In fact, I scrubbed it off to rid myself of the smell. I could not stand it.
It is not what it used to be. I loved the old smell. Now, it must have been reformulated and almost unrecognizable from its original scent. I am fully aware that my senses and preferences have changed over time, but not this much.

Longevity: 7/10 (6+ hours)
Projection: 5/10 (Drifts slowly from the skin)
Scent: 2/10 (Starts off bitter, retains an alcohol like smell)
Versatility: 2/10 (Ummm...rock concerts?)

jonovon

When you first apply it, the impression is that it's a projection monster that will suffocate everyone around. But very quickly this blast is reduced to a well behaved scent. For the first ten minutes it's very loud, then it's around arm length for some 30 minutes, and in an hour it's close to the skin.

And that was what I was looking for: a good musk, with soapy and talc-ey nuances that sits close to the skin. It's indeed sexy, dry and clean, with that barbershop aura associated with manly fragrances. I've worn this for some 5 days and can't stop wearing it. It's really good quality and sexy. For the price, it's a bargain.

The scent reminds me of Axe Musk, but with a better quality and somewhat more "oily" and sticky (I really don't know how to express this quality, sorry for the vagueness).

Most of the times I applied it I only got a good soapy smell that gets a bit woodier and a lot sexier, a classic musk. It really mixes well with the body chemistry to create a comforting skin scent.

Anyway. I read some people saying it smells like mothballs. I'd like to give you my take on that. There were two times I applied it and got the mothball note. Both of them were right after showering with a regular Dove soap. The combination of Dove and Jovan Musk created that unpleasing note. But usually I use non-scented soap, then JM gets ok. So my advice is: use non-scented soap, or wait some time after shower before apraying JM.

Overall it's a very good scent. So far it's exceeded my expectations and made me very happy. I'd just like to say that the bottle is one of the ugliest and cheapest ever.

Coffee King

I quite like this, i've layered it on, and smell like i've been living in an old ladies' wardrobe since the 70's, surrounded by mothballs and Armoatics elixir. It's a bargain and it's fab. Great one for gym and tennis.

bonnie52

I think that this is on of the sexiest colognes I have ever smelled for a man! I bought a big bottle for my boyfriend back in 1976 and every time I smell it to this day, it takes me back in time. Men…this scent is a huge turn on! You won't regret buying this one!

nise

I too loved the smell of Jovan Musk on my boyfriend back in the 80's, so much so that I bought a spray bottle for myself and wore it as my signature for a while. So yes, a woman can pull this off - put it this way, nobody complained when I wore it and even if they did, I wouldn't have cared.

wbissar

They don't make colognes like this anymore. used since the 90's and I still have it in my arsenal. Very very sexy, very very vesatile. Longevity is very good and sp is the projection. And the price, well...

Rod1969

imlovespapa.

Can a woman pull this off ? Why Not. Start out with one spurt and take it from there.

For $10 a bottle , what have you got to lose ?....

My wife is not that fond of it, although id just come from the shower to the lounge room and plonked along side of her just after giving myself a small dousing. That said, my two daughters (15 and 16 ) LOVE it on me.

I like to give meself a good 4,5 hits after a shower at night and relax in front of the telly copping musky wafts before bed time.

Projection and longevity are both mild, besides that, I still like it anyway.

Give it a shot.

ecojoe69

I know- its a Jovan scent; but it does some really amazing things on my skin and I really like it. The musk and wood really come out and do something really sexy on my skin. A thumbs up for a cheap buy.

adair58

This is sexy, warm and powerful. I love it and I loved it on one man only. He smelled so sharp and clean and inviting-but dirty at the same time. When we parted I bought a small bottle just to smell him again, just for awhile... and I haven't smelled it since. It's amazing what the power of scent can do, even 30 years later.

RobbieX

One of the nicest musk-based men's scents out there.

Christina0065

This takes me back to the early 80's when my boyfriend would wear this. When I smell it still, it brings me way back to that time when I was in Puppy Love!! :) Yum yum!

Nicolas V

This is one of those that smells great on other people, but just wrong on me. A classic musk. Nothing more, nothing less.

Kharnak Rex

definitely a recognizable classic. Much much weaker than i remember. Much like how the YSL Kouros no longer has that sweet musty honey at the dry down that lasts to the next day, Jovan used to have this powdery "oily" note that sticks and penetrates, but not anymore.
This is extremely similar to the oily note in Khiel's Original musk oil, but more diffuse, and sweeter, with a noticable orange/citrus opening. turns powdery/soapy at the end. Still nice, but a shadow of what we remember.

Riobard

idn y this is getting knock so much I was not around to smell the first formula that came out in the 70s but I love this cologne woman over 35 watch out.

roll4fun

Recent online purchase after a 1 year absence seemed more watered down than the 1 oz and 3 oz versions that I bought 2 - 3 years ago. The familiar spicy with a hint of pepper and musk were there, but the initial come on strong scent wasn't there, and I don't get more than 2 hours longevity out of this latest buy.
Yes, this frag, and recent past buys did have a bit of the cheap old ladys perfume in it. However, I felt as though frag toed the right side of the line between "spicy" and "sweet" for being too feminine. Arguably, even "masculine" and "feminine" frags share common notes to some degree. This was always my substitute frag, believe it or not, actually generated some compliments from ladies who I enjoyed getting compliments from.
As for recent discontent: 3 oz. bottle had silver cap as in past purchases, but noticed the fine print (in online purchase page) said "Jovan Musk by Coty." Bottom of frag box had Coty label too. I never looked that closely on my 2010 - 2011 purchases. I've noticed that a version with black cap is being advertised as "Jovan Musk by Jovan." from some online vendors. Could this one be "the real deal". At least one inquiring mind wants to know.
In the meantime, I'm giving this a qualified "try" endorsement.

ezarc

I bought this expecting to be taken back to my childhood memories of musk, this is anything but what I remember.

Maybe I have changed or what they call musk has changed but this smells like the bad perfume that old women wear and really gets up your nose.

I can't stand it, while it only cost $9 for a 100ml bottle and I don't know what to do with it. On 1 hand I want to throw it out but don't want to waste the money, and on the other hand I want to give it away but I wouldn't ever wish to smell this on anyone I know.

This makes my throat sore, my nose sting, even thinking about using it yesterday is bringing back a headache.

It should be classified as a chemical weapon and banned.

lavaman

They must of reformulated this product over the decades.. Natural Musk from the 1970s was way to raunchy, I out grew it super fast. The top and middle notes were fine but when you get down to bottom notes watch out. you people must be smelling a newer synthetic type musk
