Love Defined

According to Buddhist analysis, love is root of suffering. This was said by the Lord Buddha (the chief/founder of Buddhist thoughts). He said so because according to Him everything on earth is impermanent including the love. He says “whatever is impermanent, it leads to suffering”. He has given many examples regarding this subject. Some examples can be focused as,

“piyehi vippayogo dukkho” Separation of beloved one is suffering.

“yam’picchaŋ taŋ na labhati, tam’pi dukkhaŋ” Not gaining the desired object is suffering.Image

There are many more examples set by Him with the intention to prove that love leads to suffering. He also showed the way that leads to the end of these sufferings.

Most people are quite confused with this term “love”. According to my point of view, the word “love” is a symbol used to designate the human feelings that are felt opposite to hatred. It is just a designation given to the feelings which all the beings enjoy in. Every single being/ creature is running after love. As I see, without love, not even a single being can live on Earth. The majority of beings, in some way or the other, engaged with love feelings. Buddhism says that it is because of ignorance that beings engage themselves in these worldly feelings. I believe that, one must keep himself/herself open to the great varity of experience that life offers. Love and work, art and sorrow, food and danger all these are life’s Manu. Buddha himself claimed that, whatever is subject to arise has the nature of cessation.

“Yaŋ kiňci samūdaya dhammaŋ, sabbaŋ taŋ nirudaya dhamman’ti”

In that case I should mention that love is also one subject that can be included in things that have the nature of arising and cessation. But I don’t understand why “love” should be the root of suffering. Suffering is itself there as love is. As everything is impermanent, love is also impermanent. It exits for sometime and vanishes itself. We can accept that after love vanishes then suffering comes to occupy the empty place. Not only suffering, that can come and occupy the empty place, but also some other different types of love feeling can come and occupy that same place.

For example,

A baby loves to drink breast-milk (babies usually love or have positive feelings for breast-milk). If a mother dies after the birth, the baby will be used to drink milk from feeding bottle. It doesn’t mean that if the mother dies the baby’s love for breast milk will turn into suffering. It may turn into some other different types of love, as love for milk from feeding bottle.

“Sometimes we make love with our eyes. Sometimes we make love with our hands. Sometimes we make love with our bodies. Always we make love with our hearts Love is a canvas furnished by Nature and embroidered by imagination.”Voltaire

Both, love and the suffering exit as they are. But I don’t understand how one can be the root of the other. If so we can come to the conclusion that suffering is also the root of love, as everything on earth is dependent. I believe, those who believe that love brings suffering, try to avoid love, go against love, they too have love for their own goals. I should say, there are different forms of love. Different forms of love have different approach.

Finally I should define the word “love” as; it’s just a word that is used to designate all kinds of feeling that can be calculated as against hatred. So I don’t see it as the root of suffering. If our ancestors named/ addressed these feelings (so called love feelings) by any other word, we would have called them by that name without addressing them as love. So there is nothing wrong with the word love. It is just a word as suffering is. There is nothing wrong with the feelings the word love indicates. They (feelings) arise/happen naturally to the human body or the body of any beings. The world is like a factory where we can see that every kind of feeling is produced naturally. Beings are used as resources to produce these feelings. All kinds of resource/ element are created there on Earth for the production of feelings (so called love, hated and neuter). When necessary elements for love feeling, combine together there arises the feeling of love. This is how the rest feelings are also produced.
