The province expects to begin preliminary work on the Finch West LRT late this year. But a contractor to build the $1.2 billion transit line won’t be named until early 2017.
In the latest sign that the province is serious about building the LRT, Metrolinx and the provincial P3 agency, Infrastructure Ontario, announced that three construction consortia have qualified to bid on the design-build, finance and 30-year maintenance contract.
“The new LRT will help transform Finch Ave. West into a vibrant community accessible to motorists, transit riders, cyclists and pedestrians alike,” according to a press release on Saturday.

The LRT that will run 11 kilometres between two underground terminus stations at the Finch West subway on the Spadina extension and Humber College in the west. There will be 16 surface stops in between.
The LRT is expected to be complete in 2021.
Among the qualified bidders are Humber Valley Transit partners, comprised of SNC-Lavalin Graham, ACI and National Bank, Scotia Capital; Mosaid Transit Group made up of ACS, Aecon, CRH and RBC Capital Markets and, EllisDon Bechtel.
Bechtel is the company managing the completion of the six-stop Spadina subway extension to York Region for the TTC.
Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced the project last spring.
The Finch West LRT is forecast to handle about 14.6 million rides a year, or 40,000 a day, by 2031.
