|
|
I was with a couple of friends today, and we were thinking of various games to add to our hangout sessions, since we basically resort to the same three games a few nights a week, with little variation. One of the suggestions that came up was RB/GH.
Other than my family and you internet folk, I never really expressed my interest/passion/addiction towards the GH franchise to anybody. Occasionally if it was ever mentioned (aka 4-6 years ago ), I might chip in whenever people were talking about someone else who was "good", and compare myself, but I'd never scratch the surface on just how much time I've devoted to these games.
And that's when it hit me. This was my game. No matter how many other things I get in to, it's extremely unlikely I will ever be as devoted or focused as I was on GH. In my group of friends, we play Smash a lot, and I'm sorta "that guy", who is usually the best, and unsurprisingly, the only one who really bothers spending time on the internet to learn a lot about the game, characters and advanced techniques.
Compared to GH though, I know nothing, and I am horrible at it.
I simply will never be able to come close to reaching the amount of hours, effort, posts, money, charts, scores, friends, streams, videos, knowledge and depth I put into these games.
When I was like 14-16, this was what made me happy. I never really had too many close friends and didn't hang out with people much outside of school. I would come home, go on SH, play GH, watch streams and chat with fellow GH players. Staying up late to watch streams or to hear details about the newest GH title was some of the most exciting things that happened. I would literally be in such a good mood on days when I got a new tough FC, it's almost silly.
The eight years of playing and seven of being on this site will always be part of me. I'll always know what the hard songs are, what sections, the original 211 songs, who the best players were, etc. etc..
It will always be my game, and I don't think I actually could get more interested in a different game. I'm passing the years where I have absurd amounts of free time, and the fact that GH has stopped makes it possible to have a more complete knowledge and experience of everything GH related.
Mostly, I don't think I'd want to get THAT involved in another game. I did my growing on GH. I played the games as they came out. The long, slow, time-consuming process of practicing, replaying and getting better has passed.
Then again, perhaps it was the SH community that really made me as committed to the games as I am. It was actually fun watching people get better, and to have them watch you get better. Perhaps it was thanks to the games more "self-competitive" nature, where you could give advice to people and not worry or care too much about them being better than you; as long as you got better and achieved your goals, you were content. There are not as many excuses you can use for people being better than you, like in other games (cheap tactics, camping, OP characters, etc.), which makes the competitive aspect much less ugly, thus making it more fun.
I guess this post is less of a question and more of a post that people can relate to and reflect on. While I sometimes am embarrassed about how much time I put into this game and think about what else I could have done, I would never take it all back. It was a big deal to me, I made some good friends and I obviously enjoyed myself. I guess I'll end this post by saying thank you to everyone on SH for making one of the most friendly, helpful and awesome video game communities a person could ask for.
TL;DR
I like GH and played it a lot. _________________

I'm definitely the same way. When the DLC stopped I got disconnected and stopped playing for a while but in the last few weeks I've jumped in pretty well again..I've always been a music lover more than anything so I won't ever get tired of the games...I always love just hitting shuffle and playing whatever comes up, I'm not the type to normally grind the same song over and over.
I'm also the only one of my friends and family that ever got into it much, I used to have a couple friends who played when it was at its peak but they never even got to the point of learning to alt-strum. Its weird being in that middle spot where Im miles ahead of anyone I can play with locally but nowhere near the top on scorehero. _________________

same way as well. I barely touched GH/RB in a while but that's for IRL reason (3rd baby) and a bit or too much grinding I think. I know i'll come back to it and enjoy the game maybe even more than before.
there's only 1 other friend that cared that much for GH and he's sick of it now. he doesnt play at all not because he dont want to but because "he's done it all" he says. the music aspect is veyr important for him and not seeing what he wanted to hear in the games pissed him off a bit. he's not the kind of guy like to who discover new stuff so I lost him along the way. heck, he hasnt fired up his ps3 since a year and half.
people know im crazy about GH/RB but that's it. im alone into this, which suck a bit but I understand that playing over and over the same games/series could be boring for some people.
at least we have tihs awesome community and place to live on. _________________

Well considering that I am in the same group of great friends as you (and consider you one of my best friends) I will definitely agree with you. This game has given me so many memories, so many awesome experiences, that even though it pretty much kept me from playing any other video game in the last few years, and was a monumental waste of time, I would never choose anything else. Seriously, 2009-10 were some of the best years of my life, and I owe it all to GH and especially SH. The streams, the competitions for FCs and scores, the self improvement- it's like crack! I still play now and then, not quite like I used to, but I don't think I can ever give up this game. Even if GH is dead, as long as SH has a little bit of life in it I don't think I'll ever stop trying to improve. Heck, even if SH bites the dust I think I would still pop in a GH game now and then to see what I could do. It's just a part of me now. And I wouldn't want it any other way _________________

I went to a friend's birthday party and was introduced to someone I had never met before, and he goes, "Hey, aren't you the..." and proceeds to do an air guitar/Guitar Hero impression. "Yes, that's me." And I'll never get tired of it.
This franchise was definitely my game. TBH, I can't think of any other game or franchise that I've invested so much time and effort into. I spent a good six years on this game, and it was totally worth it. I love having the notoriety around town as "the Guitar Hero," even though there's probably a guy or two in Atlanta that can school me on TTFAF. At least all my friends know that if they need someone to rock the shit out of Guitar Hero, they come to ME first. _________________

95% of the time I turn on my Xbox it's usually to play RB3. Most of the rest of the time it's Just Cause 2. So I guess. _________________

Since everyone I know (hell, even the ones I just kinda know) has learned about how I won my car playing GH3, it's impossible for Guitar Hero to NOT be my game. At work, whenever we get a new worker it's "See this guy? He won his car playing Guitar Hero" and so that's the game I'll forever be associated with. I'm not complaining at all, I just find it hilarious since the car is now over 5 years old and that tournament will be 6 years done come this December. It's a moment that will never die. _________________

I feel the exact same way as OP. Such a special series to me, and such a special community here on SH. _________________

GH/RB used to be my game, but now that I think about it I don't think it is anymore. RB1 and GH3 were my first 360 games and I played them almost exclusively. These were my games for 5-6 years, so it's kind of natural to move on. Now I play almost anything else, especially with Steam sales I am moving away from rhythm games (that is, until I get Rocksmith on Steam). The only friends I've had locally that played regularly sold their plastic instruments once they had a baby, and playing by myself just bores me now.
I guess you could say it'll always be my "game" in the sense that it will always be the only game I'm good at at the max level (I can't think of any other game I can easily play on the highest difficulty except Diablo 3). But I'd need to find a regular local group or even online group to ever consider really playing regularly again... I will say this though, I've played the hell out of Blitz lately since it's single-player focused
But I do think it's safe to say I won't ever get as absorbed in a single game or genre of games as I have with GH/RB. For example, I love Mass Effect, probably my 3rd favorite game series of all time. But I can't see myself playing Mass Effect on a regular basis for the next 5 years. It just won't happen no matter how good those games are. There was definitely something special about GH/RB that kept that replayability so high for so long _________________

Oh, definitely, GH1 came out when I was 11, I tried the demo at Walmart, and became hooked immediately. I begged my mom for a PS2 that Christmas, but never got one, so i just played the demo at Walmart whenever we went lol. I got a Wii 2 years later for my 13th birthday, and that was around the time GH3 came out, so I begged my mom for that for Christmas. She did get it, and holy shit did I play the hell out of GH3 on the Wii. I got up to expert in like a month, it just came to me. Every year after that, I'd get the latest GH or RB game for my Birthday, it just became a thing where I'd get the newest sequel for my birthday, and then the spin offs like Smash Hits or Band Hero for Christmas. When I was 16, I got my first job at a grocery store. I bought RB3 with my first paycheck, I'll never forget it. Fast forward to now, I'm gonna be 19 next month, and I'm not sick of rhythm games yet lol. At the moment I can't wait for Rocksmith 2014, so the excitement for rhythm games has not died out yet (8 years later). I love these games, and I can't see myself getting as engrossed or involved into another franchise. I'll always be into other games too, like the Assassin's Creed series, which is probably my second fave franchise, but no other games can match the magic of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band franchise, and I'm glad for it
TLDR: GH/RB defined my teenager-hood. |

I suppose this will always be "my game". I've excelled at other games before, but not to the level and caliber I have with this one. For example, i've put in over 3,600 hours into Runescape, and maxed out quite a few stats. However, those didn't require skill. It was all just time consuming. With GH, I guarantee i've put in at least that much, if not more time into the game, and this actually requires skill, practice, and sometimes borderline luck to excel at. I know that as I get older my free time grows smaller, and due to that, i'll never do anything to the extent of what i've done in either one of those games, and of the two, I accomplished above and beyond more in GH than Runescape. _________________
