NBA Free Agency: Kings offer Otto Porter max deal, according to report

The Sacramento Kings reportedly offered Otto Porter a max deal during their meeting on Sunday, according to Chris Haynes and Marc Spears of ESPN.

Even though Porter has an offer in hand, Haynes and Spears are reporting Porter will take meetings with other teams before deciding on Sacarmento’s pitch:

It’s unclear as of now how many other teams will try to make a pitch to Otto, but the Brooklyn Nets, who have long been rumored to be interested Porter, will likely be one of them.

Now that there’s reportedly a max offer (which would start at $24.7 million next season) on the table, we’ll see if the Wizards try to get back to negotiating table with Porter. They’re the only team that can offer Porter a five-year deal, and they could leverage it to give Porter more guaranteed money and lower Porter’s year-to-year salary, which would help with their cramped cap sheet.

If Porter does sign an offer sheet, the Kings (or whoever else gets him to sign an offer sheet) could give Porter some flexibility. They could make the fourth year of a max offer sheet a player option, which would allow him to enter the free agent pool as soon as he’s eligible to sign for 30 percent of the cap instead of 25 percent, or they could even do a three year deal and make the third year a player option if Porter really wanted to go that direction.

Washington will have two days to match any offer sheet Porter signs, but once he signs the sheet, the Wizards can’t renegotiate the terms in it. They can either take it as is (with all options, trade kickers, and other incentives included) or decline to match.
