Several local events are going on for residents looking for ways to honor local veterans this Memorial Day weekend, or just spend a day with the family. Below is a list of local activities:

South Pasadena: Mayor Mike Ten will lead a brief Memorial Day service beginning at 9 a.m. Monday on the grounds of the War Memorial Building, 435 Fair Oaks Ave.

Girl Scouts from South Pasadena Troop 3031 will perform the National Anthem, Boy Scout Troop 333 will present the Colors, and both troops will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

A local veteran has been invited to speak, and former South Pasadena City Councilman David Margrave will describe how the grounds of the War Memorial Building serve as a memorial to those who gave their lives in war.

Ten will lead a tour of the War Memorial Building Legion Room, which contains unique artifacts from American Legion Post 140, organized in 1919.

Monrovia: Members of the Arcadia-Monrovia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2070 will place wooden crosses on the gravesites of veterans at Live Oak Memorial Park, 200 E. Duarte Road, beginning at around 9 a.m. Saturday.

In addition, members of the post’s Women’s Auxiliary will place flowers on veterans’ graves, and local Boy Scouts will decorate veterans’ graves with American flags.

Arcadia: Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich hosts his 14th annual “Remembering Our Veterans and Their Families: Past, Present and Future” event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Arcadia County Park, 405 S. Santa Anita Ave.

The event is free.

A special tribute to the armed forces will begin at 11:30 a.m., co-hosted by Channel 4 weatherman Fritz Coleman.

The event also will include skydivers at about 1:50 p.m. and flyover by World War II fighter planes at 12:30 p.m. Veterans’ families can bring photos of their loved ones to place in the “Wall of Remembrance.”

There also will be displays of military vehicles and equipment, a children’s area including face painting, arts and crafts, games, entertainment and free popcorn, free vaccinations, free haircuts and manicures, live entertainment, food booths and more.

Pasadena: The San Gabriel Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America will hold a Memorial Day observance and “wreath placement,” at 11:45 a.m. at Memorial Park, 85 E. Holly St.

The observance will be followed by a barbecue at noon. Barbecue tickets can be purchased in advance.

Altadena: Altadena Community Church will hold a free Memorial Day gathering from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday in the church’s parking lot, 943 E. Altadena Drive.

Everyone in the community is welcome to enjoy food from local restaurants, kids’ activities, music, games, and more. The event is free.

San Marino: The city of San Marino will hold a Memorial Day at 9 a.m. Monday at Lacy Park, 1485 Virginia Road.

The free event will honor veterans from San Marino.

Sierra Madre: The San Gabriel Valley Chapter of Narcotics Anonymous will hold a Memorial Day picnic from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sierra Vista Park, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd.

A suggested donation of $15 per person will be accepted at the event.
