Badge System Goals
4
5
What are the primary goals of your badge system? What would you like this system to accomplish? What values would you like to see expressed? How will a badge earner grow and evolve by earning badges in this system? Consider answering these questions individually and then gather as a team to discuss responses.

Who is responsible for overseeing and "owning" this badge? Different people may be responsible for the badge system versus individual badges.Who is responsible for the technical implementation of the badges or badge system? Is it a team?Who is responsible for the visual design of this badge? Are there branding guidelines, does this require sign-off from a marketing or branding dept?Do you have a system for naming? How are badges linked conceptually? A naming system can be dynamic, creative, straightforward or a mix. Consider both your badge earner as well as the badge consuming public when naming your badge. What are the badge categories that you'll offer, e.g., attendance, participation, learning, skill, achievement, association, miscellaneous, etc.? What type is this badge? What is your badge seeking to acknowledge or address? Briefly describe the purpose of the badge. How can the badge be explained in a simple, clear way? Consider writing a tweet-length or slightly longer description; work to distinguish each badge from other badges. Bonus: short descriptions are effective social media messaging tools.'What does someone need to do in order to earn this badge? What are the required steps? In your description, indicate how this is meaningful to your organization and to the earner. Pay special attention to this content: it's what a badge consumer and the badge earner will see when they click on the badge. Are your badges artifact driven? If so, what is the evidence required by the criteria and where will the evidence reside? How long will it be kept? How will the work be assessed? Some examples include Expert, Peer, Self, Algorithmic, etc. Can also include summative, formative, etc. Are there associated rubrics? Are there minimum requirements for the badge? Do prerequisites exist? Does an earner need to earn other badges prior to this one? How long will it take someone to earn this badge? As you build out your system, you may find that length of time to earn plays a major role in your system design.Does this badge have levels? For example, Videographer level 1, Videographer level 2, Videographer level 3, etc. If so, how do they work?Does this badge accumulate toward other badges? Does one badge build upon or multiply another? For example, earning Videographer levels 1-3 earns you the Video Pro badge. Indicate the badge(s) to which your badge accumulates here.Does the badge align with any standards, e.g., learning standards, professional standards, state standards, etc.?How will earners be alerted to your badges? lf your badge is issued online, how will you indicate to the earner that they've earned a badge? Consider letting folks know that they have the opportunity to earn a badge prior to awarding it. (An exception to this notification comes when you want to issue a stealth badge.)At what point will the badge earner be notified that they have received a badge? What is the timing of that notification?Where and how the badge will be issued? How will the technical requirements be addressed? There are a variety of issuing options available: from your site, from OpenBadger, from another platform, etc.image file can go here (useful but not required)
