Being deaf in a world of non-deaf people : destiny, meeting, transmission and rupture. Four concepts enable the deaf to think their destiny in a world of non-deaf people : fate that présides over their birth ; meeting with other deaf people ; transmission of linguistic and cultural characteristics of deaf-muteness ; rupture that continually threatens transmission. This System of représentations and its social context are analysed from various points of view ranging from the myth of origin to the présent forms of transmission and rupture.
