About Us

The City and County of Denver is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual with city planning and Landmark Preservation experience to join our team within the Planning Services section of the Community Planning and Development Department as an Associate City Planner. The position will offer the opportunity to join the Landmark Preservation team and participate in a variety of exciting and complex initiatives.

About Our Job

The Associate City Planner – Landmark Preservation will provide support to a diverse range of initiatives under the purview of the Landmark Preservation work program. For example:
 
  • Assist citizens' and owners' efforts to designate historic properties as Denver Landmarks and local historic districts. We also review nominations for listing Denver properties on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Survey and document the city's built heritage to document and convey information to the public on our past and to encourage preservation of valued historic buildings and areas.
  • Perform design review of proposed exterior alterations, additions and demolitions to properties listed as individual Denver Landmarks or located within local historic districts in order to ensure that these projects preserve properties' key historic character-defining features and qualities.
  • Perform demolition review of applications both in historically designated and undesignated areas of Denver as a safeguard to protect our community's unique historical identity.
  • Present cases and provide staff support to the Landmark Preservation Commission and Lower Downtown Design Review Board.
  • Process applications for state income tax credits, helping historic property owners recoup 20 percent of qualified rehabilitation costs.
  • General support for various project meetings and presentations such as preparing draft text, maps, graphics, presentations; preparation and support for internal and external stakeholder work sessions; support to website, social media and other project communication methods.

About You

Education Requirement:

Bachelor of Arts Degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a directly related degree.

Experience Requirement:

One year of professional city planning, regional planning, or experience creating, drawing and rendering urban design plans and concepts. 

Education/Experience Equivalency:

A Master's Degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a directly related degree may be substituted for the experience requirement.  

A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements. 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree and/or Certification in Historic Preservation 
  • One year experience in Historic Preservation

Licensure and/or Certification:

Class R Driver's License at the time of application.

Probationary Period: The successful candidate will be required to complete a minimum six month probationary period (benefits will be active during this time) prior to attaining Career Status with the City.
